Hi folks, Peter's iPhone5 slid off the table and the screen has cracked. Badly.

Any idea how/where he can get a replacement, whether he can/should do it himself, etc?

If it's anything like the 4/4S, you need to buy a new digitizer etc. with the front glass as well, as they're glued together.

One of these, but that's pretty expensive - and it's not the easiest of jobs to do if you're not very technically minded, IMO.

For the money you'd (apparently) pay for a replacement screen, I'd perhaps take it back to an Apple Store and see what they'd charge for a repair/refurb.

The wife took an iphone 4 out of warranty into the apple store and got a refurb replacement for £120. In most cases I'd assume thats better priced than the hassle of self repair.

As far as we can see the LCD screen and touch screen still function fine, it's just the outer glass screen which is knackered (luckily).

I think Peter said he was going to take it to the Apple store today to see what they say.

I got my 4S screen replaced at one of those little repair kiosks at a shopping centre.

Despite telling me they use genuine apple parts, I am doubtful. The new screen scratches WAY more easily than the original ever did.

I would've gone to an Apple store if there was one anywhere near.

My 4S screen shattered yesterday. The excess on my insurance is 100 quid. Will it cost more than that to get it fixed?

How much did it cost to have it replaced there?

Curio: You can get 4S replacement screens/digitizers for cheap. Like the 5, they're pretty simple to replace provided you're technically minded. There's about 27 little screws that need to be taken out to replace the front assembly, which is fine but because they're all different sizes (and you need to put them back in the right place!) you need to make sure you've got some sort of filing system to store them in while you're working on it.

Mimi: The front glass will be glued to the touch screen/digitizer. You *can* separate them, but it's far more hassle than it's worth and is likely to cause future problems with the phone as the replacement will almost certainly not stick on properly. You should always replace the whole shebang. Unfortunately, unlike the 4S with cheap parts available, the 5 still looks expensive - I'd take it back to Apple and see what they say.

Cheers Gaz. I'm a bit shit at that kind of thing, though.

I seem to recall about $130, so it wasn't particularly cheap, but I'd been putting up with the cracked screen for a while and there was no trip planned to the big city for quite a while. I'm glad I got it fixed though, it was pretty grotty using it with a smashed front.
