It seems like America can't catch a break this week. A massive explosion at a fertilizer plant has rocked a town called West, north of Waco. Dozens of buildings destroyed, many injured. There has been confirmation that some have died, raising fears for first responding firefighters. Amongst the buildings destroyed are a nursing home and a school, though mercifully with the explosion happening at 8pm the school was undoubtably empty, as was, hopefully, the plant.

This looks to be the biggest industrial explosion in America since the Pepcon disaster in 1988. Thanks to the remoteness of that site the explosion, measured at one kiloton, only killed two - one of whom was the heroic Pepcon Controller Roy Westerfield who stayed behind to call and warn firemen to stay away. As for this one, it looks to be up there with Enschade in Holland and Flixborough in the UK back in 1974.

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-ne ... n-west.ece

Accounts from the Dallas News site attest to its scale...

Quote:
People as far away as 50 miles away reported feeling what seemed like an earthquake. The U.lS. Geological Survey reported that the blast generated enough force to register like a magnitude 2.1 earthquake.

Paul Manigrasso, a Gulf War veteran, felt the blast in Waxahachie.

“Based on my naval experience ... we knew immediately what it was but cannot believe it occurred 40 miles away,” he told KWTX-TV.

Andy Bartee of Dallas was driving home from Austin when he stopped at a convenience store about five miles from the explosion. Suddenly the lights went out and the explosion rocked the building.

“You could feel it in your chest and ears,” he said. Ceiling tiles fell and pictures on the wall broke.

“It was pretty nuts,” he said. “It looked like a mushroom cloud. It looked like an atom bomb had been dropped,” Bartee said. “I’ve never seen or felt anything like that.”

Debby Marak said she had seen the plant burning and had driven closer to see what was happening but reversed direction after two boys ran toward her screaming that authorities had told them to flee because the plant was going to explode.

“It was like being in a tornado,” Marak said of the blast that erupted as she was driving away. “Stuff was flying everywhere. It blew out my windshield. It was like the whole earth shook.”

The question stands as to why a plant was built so incredibly close to the town, especially with so much space in America - and Texas especially - to place things. Apparently the plant told the EPA that there was no danger of explosion or release of fumes. But fertilizer plants are by nature hazardous, what made the EPA think it was impossible? After all, a fertilizer bomb was what McVeigh used. Furthermore, footage on the Beeb shows one man filming the fire from a dangerously near position, the blast seemingly causing burst eardrums to him and his daughter. Why isn't there literature for those living near such plants warning about the possible dangers if there ever should be a fire?

The footage of nighttime baseball fields made triages is pretty surreal. Straight out of Hollywood. Looks like its a bad week for things exploding in America. :(

It is a sad thing that the factory exploded, and hurt so many people. Maybe the town was built around the factory? i dunno.

That was on the One show, recently, wasn't it?

Almost relatedly, there's the London Beer Flood mand the Boston Molasses Disaster, although the idea of fast moving molasses is soemthing that doesn't fit in my brain.

My first thought was that it was terror-related, and indeed, the reason it decided to explode is unknown. Seems like officials were either wrong that storing anhydrous ammonia was pretty low-risk, or someone has made it explode, somehow.

But yeah, shit week for the U.S.

The explosion was preceded by a fire, so it wasn't a bomb that caused it. I think it's just a bad industrial accident. Oddly, it flagged up for me late last night as I was checking into Weather Underground to follow a storm-chasing feed. (Not an active tornado producing one, this was a system churning out some gorgeous epic wall cloud :nerd: ) One of the chasers reported a big explosion in the area and awful weird smelling smoke drifting across the roads.

From what I hear from the magnitude earthquake compared with various wiki stuff, this was probably in the region of 50 ton yield of explosive.

Applepie, I remember finding out about Silvertown from the excellent Charlie's Heroes. A fount of WWI knowledge for my teen self, that was. The biggest and worst remains, of course, the Halifax explosion in Canada during WWI. It was the biggest man-made explosion prior to nuclear weapons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_explosion

Edit: Just had a look at the map on the Beeb. The middle school is less than 200m from the fertiliser plant! What were they thinking? 8)

The ship was instantly disintegrated; the remains of her hull launched high into the air. The blast travelled at more than 1,000 metres per second. Temperatures of 5,000°C and pressures of thousands of atmospheres accompanied the moment of detonation at the centre of the explosion.[40] White-hot shards of iron rained down upon Halifax and Dartmouth.[41] The barrel of one of Mont-Blanc's guns landed approximately 5.6 kilometres (3.5 mi) north of the explosion site near Albro Lake in Dartmouth, while part of her anchor landed 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) south at Armdale.[42]

The same as the Hemel Hempstead depot explosion I assume. It was "safe" i.e. every expert said that the chance of anything like this happening was so remote as to be non-existant.

Needed better risk analysts.

It is worth noting that no company I have worked for has ever exploded.

I live in Hemel Hempstead, and as a testament to my awesome powers of snoozing, slept through the explosion. My girlfriend and I were living with my parents at the time - she shot out of bed convinced she'd heard an explosion and I had just managed to convince her she'd had a bad dream when my dad burst into the room convinced there'd been a plane crash! The shockwave hit the house before anyone heard the explosion, so it was as if something had 'flown over' the house very low before hearing anything.

I had to work in town that day and the whole place stank of petrol - that was around 3 miles away from Buncefield. Later that evening, myself and the ex went up to Woodhall Farm as we'd just bought our first flat there and were waiting to move in - we'd heard about building damage there so wanted to check it out. It was about 10pm on a Sunday night in the middle of December, we were about a mile away from Buncefield and the sky was glowing orange and it felt hot like a summer's day outside. Absolutely mental.

I see smoke over the river. It looks like it is coming from the Gherkin, or at the very least, somewhere very nearby.

The usual reason I suspect. You build a facility in the middle of nowhere near a main road and a town springs up around it.

Or if it was nearby a town before but at a "safe" distance, over time the town could have encroached on the plant.

This is what happens when you have reduced city sizes, and is compounded when your staff are determined on a daily basis purely on the grounds of who lives closest.

Have you heard the new version with Gary Barlow and other more recent singers?
Is it any good?

Ok this is weird, but in a wrong way. It's like a Flash Gordon version of War of the Worlds, plus Liam Neeson is no Richard Burton.
It's not awful, but it is close enough to the original to be a poorer comparison.

Hmmm... it's growing on me. Once you forget about the original it works much better. It feels much more upbeat and pacey, even though it's the same speed.

Track 2 seems to be pretty much identical in both versions (apart from different people reading the parts obviously)
