Hi folks. I don't often start threads*, but this is a special(ly bad) occasion.

My Nexus 7 has been broken for a couple of weeks, and I'm not sure why. I tried turning it on and nothing happened.**

So, the symptoms:

Press power button, nothing happens.
Hold it for 30 (or a million) seconds, nothing happens.
Plug it into a computer, nothing happens.
Plug it into a computer and hold the power button for 30 seconds, something happens.
Mainly black screen with sparse, moving dots of colour.
Looks like it's 99% fucked, then, with only that spark of life preventing 100%.
I would just return it, but I have foolishly been using it as an HD for some stuff I'd like to keep.
When it plugs in, hard reboots and does the sparse dots, it is not recognised by the computer as a drive (or anything).

Should I just bite the data bullet and return it to the shop? Or can I dig into it to get to the data somehow? There are no outward signs of damage, and I'm not sure how this could have happened. Maybe someone in the house knocked it off a surface, but it's got a pretty sturdy and comfy case, and my house does not boast any cliff-face plummets.

* But when I do, I'm sure they usually begin like that.
** Story of my life.

Might be worth trying a hard reset.

Instructions here.

Edit: Although you'll lose anything stored on it in the process.

Cheers. Short of taking it apart and putting the drive in something else (even possible?), I think that stuff is now history anyway. I'll give it a shot.

Dunno, probably not feasible, and surely that'd risk invalidating your warranty making it hard to return to the shop leaving you with a broken device and no data either.

Take it back to the shop and ask if the data can be restored?

I believe this is a known fault -- some sort of firmware failure that can happen after the device goes flat. My friend Toby had to send his away to be repaired, I'm afraid.

The pixel party bug :( This bug came from the jellybean 4.2 firmware patch iirc

This happened to my brothers nexus, here is the self fix that will save your data -

Quote:
To charge a dead Nexus 7:

1. Plug-in your dead N7 to a wall charger. (Jump immediately to step 2.)
2. Immediately after plugging it in, press Volume Down and Power at the same time.

*This should get you into the bootloader menu. You may have to try this with different chargers or test out the timing in order to get it to work.

3. Once in the bootloader menu, use Volume Down until you see “Power Off Device.”
4. Choose that option with the Power button.
5. Once your device is off, unplug the charger and then plug it back into the device.
6. You should now see the battery meter (pictured above) with your device returning to life.

Hope that helps mate

Toby tried many variants of those "enter the Konami code standing on your head as the device boots" suggestions, and none of them worked for him. Just FYI. There are probably multiple things that go wrong with similar symptoms, I think, based on the inconsistency of people's results with the proposed fixes.

Quite true, but I have seen it work on one nexus, so worth a shot
