Watching Lockout. Mike from neighbours is sent in to space to rescue the president's daughter (Shannon from Lost). What can possibly go wrong?

She's a liability. Wasn't she the daughter in Taken?

Not much. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. Mike from Neighbours was really good, I thought!

I saw Trance today, the new Danny Boyle film. It's... alright - bordering on a bit pony.

Basically, it tries too hard to be confusing, and none of the film makes sense until the big reveal at the end where it's meant to all fall into place - only it doesn't really work.

Scores on the Craster scale, though - first time I've seen vag in a 15, too.

On a Mike-from-Neighbours tip, Animal Kingdom is excellent. Australian crime drama viewed through the lens of teenager dragged into the machinations of his dodgy uncles after his mum dies and he move in with his grandmother.

It was much better than I expected. Is this where Baumgartner got his idea of jumping from space?

That's a pisser.

He and James Berardinelli were a pretty good compass for me films wise, if they both hated a film then it was about 90% certain that I would too, if one or the other liked it I'd generally get something out of it, and if both of them liked it I never went wrong.

Roger Ebert was a great American, a true liberal, anti-creationism and a lot of that other shit that is getting a bit scary over in the USA, and of course a damn fine film critic.

I knew he'd been ravaged by cancer very badly in recent years (and lost a chunk of his face in the process), but he always kept on writing.

Seems it got him in the end though - but as with all great writers, his legacy cannot be erased.

Roger Ebert on death:

Quote:
I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear. I hope to be spared as much pain as possible on the approach path. I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same state. What I am grateful for is the gift of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter.

Has there ever been a live action fillum with mechs before? It's all been anime stuff, hasn't it?

Watched 'Kurt & Courtney' on Netflix the other night. Somehow I've managed to never see it before.

I always thought she either killed him or drove him to it, so it didn't change much for me in that regard.

Even so - EVIL FUCKING WOMAN.

I watched Piranha DD tonight which was rubbish apart from the bits with The Hoff in (and the pretty ladies).

Then I watched Project X, and I loved it. It's Animal House, but in 2012. There's a girl in it called Alexis who is lurvely, and now I just want to go to a party.

That looks brilliant (you can definitely tell it's the guy who directed District 9, though). Finally, some decent sci fi. What with that and the giant robots vs monsters thing, this summer should be good for cinema outings.

'Elysium' looks a little generic from the trailer, but I'm gonna put my trust in the director, since District 9 is one of my favourite films.

It looks fairly dull, tbh. Is it not just about a bunch of tedious young people having a party, then? Is there a giant monster that comes along on a rampage and destroys New York?

Do make time for The Abyss (director's cut) and also Aliens (director's cut) if you haven't seen them for a while - Cameron knocked out some fucking good films back in the day.

In particular I'd forgotten how good The Abyss was, and the director's cut is a massive improvement on the theatrical release.

Oh yes, and True Lies of course.

(The original Terminator film is a given.)

I think True Lies is the ultimate Arnie film, I imported the DVD from the States back when the UK release was cut to buggery, in fact, I'm not sure the uncut version ever got released here. (Still got the R1 DVD on the shelf.)

It got a 1s cut for the UK cinema release (which I saw), and I remember watching it on video when it was released and thinking 'Eh? This has been fucked with!'

Thereafter I sought out the US R1 DVD release once the internet and DVDs became 'a thing'.

Full history here - http://www.melonfarmers.co.uk/hitstn.htm

But yes, an amazingly entertaining film.

I don't want to get my jollies off watching it, I just want to see Holly. She's a freaking goddess.

Lets face it, she's the only reason why anyone remembers Taken (probably) and was Taken 2 was dire in comparison (fact).

I'd love to make her breakfast in bed. Or wash her hair in the bath. Or slow dance in the living room to the theme tune from The Littlest Hobo.

Lars And The Real Girl is one of the bestest films I've ever seen.

How it manages to pull off such a silly, smutty premise and yet be so genuinely funny, touching and moving, I really don't know.

Ryan Gosling helps a lot of course, as do a superb supporting cast and a script that never misses a beat, along with incredibly sure-footed direction.

I've seen it before, but on a rewatch it's even better.
