So, apparently a new survey says there are 7 classes now:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973

Elite
Established Middle Class
Technical Middle Class
New Affluent Workers
Traditional Working Class
Emergent Service Workers
Precariat

What do you come out as? I'm Elite, as if there was ever any doubt ;)

I filled out the survey, got 50/60/90, but couldn't see anywhere where it said what category that put me in. So I assume I come out as 'Dumbass'.

Apparently I work out as Established middle class because I said "no" to the question "do you laugh at dogs shitting in the street?"

The questions are utterly fucking braindead and myopic on so many levels. Totally Nucear Family-centric, too. So many configurations of "people living together" that are ignored...

Seemingly because I sold the house recently. had I not done that, it is quite different.

Clearly bollocks, this.

Disappointing that going to museums or listening to classical music is considered to be something that the lower classes can't or don't do. None of these things are inaccessible to the curious, and indeed there was a long tradition throughout the 19th Century and into the 20th of workingmen's educational institutes.

Actually, if you read the descriptions, it's not saying "this thing makes you upper or lower class", it's saying the bigger the breadth of things you do, the higher up your scoring for that category. It does specifically say that watching football and going to the opera 'score' the same.

That's bollocks anyway. Despite ticking none of those, it gave me Elite and then said it was because I like doing those things.

I'm pretty sure Craster has filled out a different thing to everyone else.

So some sociologists have made up some new social classes which are based on nothing more meaningful than their own ridiculous survey and arbitrary scoring system. What a massive waste of time.

This is possibly the only time that socialising with Riles has any advantage at all. Ever.

It gives undue weighting to Finance and range of social circle. By definition, if there was a question saying 'Do you live in London' then those scores should be proportionately reduced.

Until that time, I'M FUCKING ELITE.

I did it twice, and the only difference between the two goes was a couple of the people I included as knowing socially, and that change was the difference between being Elite and Technical Middle Class. Daft. That said, I won't be socialising with anyone working in IT any more, to maintain my Elite status.

This thing is proof, if, indeed, any more proof were needed, that sociologists are pointless intellectual vacuums.

The problem of these surveys is that they to attempt to classify the full range of UK society into a handful of tiers, instead of just accepting that there are so many different permutations of personal circumstance that you can't do that.

I'm Technical Middle Class with an elitist attitude, you dirty plebs. Get off my lawn.
