I got rid of all my game mags a couple of years ago - they take up too much space. Sold a fair bit on ebay - the retro gamers and those retro edge specials. Mrs LTIA helped me with this as she sells stuff on ebay regularly and was glad to see the back of them.

This month for my birthday she got me a Retro Gamer subscription. This is especially odd as I was talking about subscribing to 'Prog' magazine (despite the shit cover disk).

So yeah, I'm stuck with 12 months of Retro Gamer due to a clerical wife error. Got the first issue a couple of days ago and the cover story is... Dragon's Lair! Great. Lots of fawning over one of the worst games of all time. It is an intersting story, though.

Yeah that six page(!) Dragon's Lair thing was awful. I suppose it's a deservedly remembered game due to the crowds around it at the arcades. Not much to write about how the world's first QTE played, though.

Does that 24kg include issues 97, 102, 103 and 135, Dimmers?

Took issue 18 of AmiFor to bed yesterday to furtively flick through. I remember it being heavy on adverts, but christybikings I wan't ready for the sheer scale of adverting in real life. I can only imagine that PD companies must've been raking it in to afford full page adverts back then. Still raised nostalgia goose-bumps seeing them though.

Heh, in the same issue ("Linda Barker" - ed) gave Magic Carpet 2 41%. In the next issue there's a letter from an indignant Bullfrog PR lady complaining he'd dared "slag off a Bullfrog game". I have to agree with him. Magic Carpet was awful beyond words.

41% is quite harsh. The problem is that he often goes for stunt marking for impact.

As a disclaimer I only ever played the demo which had 4 or so levels* but it seemed an enjoyable romp worthy of something in the mid to late 60's. My main complaint would be draw distances that made everything look like it was happening in fog but I guess that is the technology of the time.



* I may have actually got the full game on budget as well as the demo. My memory is hazy.

Got some late-90s Amiga Formats now. Before picking the top one up (ish 125, July 1999) I thought about how late APs were always Doom obsessed, and SURELY the Amiga scene had moved on from that in the three year gap. Nope. All Doom. Doom doom doom. Also Quake, but mostly Doom.

I found scans of an AF issue from 1998 recently, and was amazed that they still produced 100+ page issues and had a dedicated "Games Editor" on the staff payroll as late as then. Amazed.

It's quite... odd reading an Miga mag from that late. I have a recurring dream where AP restarted in the mid 00s, but with completely new staff. My brain can't deal with it. That's what these AmiFors are like.

In PCGamer 25 he was let near some better games.

Heh, it looks this guy has took up Modern Book Binders custom printing for Amstrad Action binders. Good on him. I would buy some if he'd decided to use the Cordex. The Wirex ones distort the mags horribly. If I ever come into some money (urgh) I'd get some new AP ones made as Cordexes.

Ever wondered what laptops cost in 1995? Or what first-run graphics cards were "best"? Are you completely mental? Then why not buy an almost complete PC Pro collection.

I could quite fancy that, I'm constantly re-reading my Custom PC collection, I keep it all archived on a bookshelf on the landing upstairs, for perusement whilst 'on the throne'.

Seeing where graphics card technology was just a few years ago, for example, is very interesting.

PC Gamer was a stunningly good mag back in the day, it was genuinely readable as a magazine, you didn't even need to have a PC or be a PC gamer to appreciate the quality of the writing.
