I could probably guess about half of them, but that would rather spoil it for everyone else, so I'll do a couple and give others a turn.

12. Parasol Stars (a sneaky one, because it obviously looks a lot like Rainbow Islands at first glance.) As for format, I'm going to guess Amiga.
14. Night Shift, a rather quirky Lucasfilm platformy puzzly thing. Spectrum, obviously.

I've tried to make it fairly accessible. The only thing I've done is crop, rotate and zoom some of the images for added challenge.

There is also a good spread of formats in there. If people get the music formats I will be very impressed.

Bollocks. Sorry. Meant to do that. It was very late when I finished doing them.

Second go, after a bit of Google image detective work. Without looking at others' answers. I'm going with the assumption that all games that look like Amiga games are the Amiga versions rather than ST or Mega Drive ports.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
1. Diggers, Amiga 1200/CD32.
2. No idea, but it looks like a CPC game.
3. Rescue on Fractalus, CPC or Atari 400/800.
4. Turrican, Amiga.
5. Slightly Magic, Amiga.
6. Super Cars, Amiga.
7. World Darts, CPC.
8. Barbarian 2 (by Palace), CPC/GX4000.
9. Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Amiga.
10. Outrun, C64.
11. Cannon Fodder, Amiga.
12. Parasol Stars, Amiga.
13. Thrust, BBC Micro. Could also be the Amstrad CPC conversion, both look identical.
14. Night Shift, Speccy.
15. Switchblade, CPC/GX4000.
16. Pilotwings, Super NES.
17. Commando. Going for VCS rather than the later 7800 version.
18.
19. Titus the Fox, Amiga.
20. The Time Machine, Amiga.

Chiptune 1 sounds like an Amiga game, chiptune 2 sounds like something played on the AY-3-8910 doorbell chime, chiptune 3 is level 1 of of Gradius, the arcade version, and chiptunes 4 and 5 sound like they are played on the C64's SID sound chip.

2 (and indeed 4) both sound very ocean/imagine 128k speccy, but I'm not sure what they are. I'll have a vaguely educated guess at saying 2 is either Rambo 3 or Operation Thunderbolt.

Some interesting answers with the usual suspects doing very well indeed. Just some hints.

One format that people are guessing is a 16 bit is actually an 8 bit.

One game appears twice. And both games of a series make an appearance.

All formats are classic 8 bit or 16 bit computers or consoles. If something sounds better than the arcade then think of versions that were improved on for home versions.

There are TWO correct answers for the final piece of music as it was reused a few years later for something quite innovative.

Next time I will be making it harder.

The Gradius tune is from the PC Engine version.

The only thing that occurs to me is that Parasol Stars could be the PC Engine version, but I thought that was a 16-bit machine.

8 bit CPU with dual 16 bit GPU. In traditional terms, it's an 8 bit.

It had oscar on the dosk instead.

Which was painfully bland.

I tried to love that game. Some of the levels looked lovely and it had some great music. There's one level that goes underwater that looks simply gorgeous. But so so bland. The A1200 version is musicless and it really brings home that the game is just polish with no gameplay at all.

Rescue On Fractalus!

So that was its name. I remember seeing that on one of the Johnny Ball programmes (Think of a Number possibly) and thinking it was the bestest looking game ever.

Very interesting early fractal technology. On the C64 the frame rate just was just too low to be fun. It was followed up by Koronis Rift and The Eidolon, though, which were both incredibly impressive.

Yep, C64 version was quite slow:

I had it for the CPC (got it on budget). Wasn't a very well known CPC conversion but gave me some good fun. Can't remember what the frame rate was like though.

CPC version, not quick but not terrible - http://java.cpc-live.com/applet/cpc.php?game=rescue_on_fractalus

Reviews of Speccy version describe it as "flying through pages of teletext". I assume it has some graphics attribute issues then.

What still amazes me about the 8-bit era is how much and hoe far some programmers pushed hardware and the existing gameplay templates (genres, if you will). We haven't had that level of creativity and hardware manipulation since, we'll, apart from some notable exceptions in the dying days of the 16-bits.

They were finding their way. There was no definition of what a game should be and the hardware forced you to innovate. Games weren't designed by large committees and coded by 500 people.

I bloody loved that game. Played it on a mates computer or console but I can't remember which one, Atari XL maybe?

It came out on all major 8 bits, so it could be any.

Its also one of the first games I remember to have a 'jump' moment

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
As you went around you were destroying gun emplacements and landing to rescue other pilots , so for the first level or two thats fine , on the next level you land and see a pilot although instead of having a white head as he walks towards the ship , he has a green head - no bother , however instead of the normal knock on the airlock door you find he's actually an alien and he jumps up at the cockpit and starts to smash at it (you can put your shields on to vaporise him) but you *will* remember the first time it happens
