My Netgear DG834GT is dying. It's making strange high-pitched buzzing noises and the wireless signal keeps dropping. Any RMDs for a fairly decent wireless modem? I'm using Macs if that makes any odds.

That's an ADSL modem and router, as opposed to a router, yes?

My linksys has been working strong for nearly 3 years, My mates netgear has been shit to him, so I always say linksys when it comes to rec me do.
WRT54G, is the code, no doubt its a government ID keeper thats following my every internet move no wonder it works so well.

My WRT54GL has also been perfect and is running an awesome custom firmware. Doesn't have the modem part in it, mind.

I hate the Netgear interface for opening for ports and stuff, it was a right pain in the arse.

One more for Linksys here, though I have an older WRT54G. Newer ones mostly don't work with the custom firmware.

That said, you may want to look at the 802.11n kit, depending on offers, etc.

Apple's own routers are solid but massively expensive in my experience.

I've got a DG834GT - going to upgrade to a DG834PN in the next couple of days. One of those 108Mpbs RangeMax jobs.

I was looking at Drayteks a few weeks ago. They all looked very nice indeed and were feature rich.

My Linksys WRT54Gwhatever has served me well for the last four and a bit years. Sadly, it's not an ADSL route, which means it's now second banana to the official Sky Netgear router (and, has been mentioned on here, that is a load of shit, and the first one they sent me was broken and extremely unreliable)

On a sort of tangential note - is it possible to chain two wireless ADSL modem/routers/hubs together.

The existing router is upstairs, but the wireless signal downstairs is a bit iffy. I was wondering how tricky it is to put one upstairs, the second downstairs and get them talking to each other to improve the signal strength.

Depends on the software. Some can.

My friend has the very setup you describe and I'm planning on implementing it too. He has a couple of Apple jobs that cost both legs, an arm and his left nut. I plan on doing it for significantly less with a couple of WRT54Gs.

My router is funny with my computer. Can someone come and fix it for me, please?

XBox 360 is wired into it and works fine.
Wii is wirelessly into it and works fine
Dell inspiron 1300 laptop is wireless and works fine
My computer with the Zyxcel USB dongle thingy in a PCI usb 2.0 card will only hold connection for about 3 minutes.

Router is a Zyxcel summat or other.

A long shot because I do this sometimes.

Double click on the wireless icon in your system tray
Click change advanced settings
click the wireless networks tab
highlight your network and click properties
click on the authentication tab
untick the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network.
