They've just started rolling JB out to the GSIII with other recent-ish handsets, including the Note and GSII, to follow 'soon' apparently. God knows what soon means in that context though of course...

Android's winning.

Any idea what percentage of iPhones out there, that is?

365 million devices sold in total, as of June 2012 (including the iPad and iPod touch). Some unknown but substantial number of those will be too old for iOS 6, or will no longer be in active use. A decent guesstimate of iOS 6 install rate would therefore be something like 30-50% of compatible devices.

I'm not rising, just stating the relevant facts as I happened to be reading about it a couple of minutes previously. I know well enough not to try and actually engage in a dialogue with him about anything Android (or, y'know, very much else) as that way lies madness!

I have to admit I'm very impressed with the battery life so far. I've had this five days and not managed to get it down below 50% after charging overnight yet. I should probably leave it to run down a few times, just a force of habit ingrained into me over the last five years.

I remember what I wanted to know - does it get hot? With all that power inside the heat has to go somewhere, no?

Nothing much so far, although I haven't tried anything amazingly graphics-intensive.

I left mine on camera mode in my pocket for a while once, and it sure let me know about it.

How still do you have to hold it for HDR? It's on my phone, but I have to make sure I'm properly still at night.

Pretty still - you can see some ghosting on the top of the hall. It doesn't give me the option to use flash with HDR, so I'm guessing you can't use it at night at all.

Seems less clunky on Windows 7, yeah. Quicker to start up.

I listen almost exclusively to either the thrashiest or poppiest music.

Ruh-roh - here's something you people with a modern iPhone can try:

Lock it
Press the button to get to the password screen
Press "emergency call"
Hold the button to turn the phone off
Press cancel
Call 112 (or perhaps any number)
Hang up straight away
Lock the phone
Press the button to get to the password screen
Press "emergency call" again
Use the now-unlocked phone :S

Got the instructions a bit wrong:

First part:
-Go to emergency call, push down the power button and tap cancel.
-Dial 112 and tap green and inmediately red.
-Go to lock screen.

Ok...ready for second part:
-Go to passcode screen.
-Keep pushing down the power button ...1...2...3...seconds and before showing the slider "turn off"...tap the emergency call button and ...voilá!
-Then without releasing the power button press the home button and ready...

Gnh. Apple's QA people need herding into the Cupertino auditorium and Cook needs to go all Steve Jobs on their asses (as Americans might say).

Not sure why the qa people are getting herded up? If you were to herd then you want the whole development team...

And anyway, this is a pretty specific chain to get through, you just can't find them all. What Apple do about it and how quickly is the issue.

Is that really something that your average QA tester would even think to try and do?

How do these people find these things?

Hrng. Perhaps I'm being harsh, but this isn't the first time Apple's lock screen's been broken through, in the same way the date screw-up at the start of the year regarding Do Not Disturb wasn't Apple's first time-related screw-up.

As a distinctly average tester, I can say with authority that no, that wouldn't have been a thing that would have been tried as a matter of course. It might have been found during general exploratory testing, if you are lucky. However I expect there were a thousand other crazy bugs like that, that were found, that never saw the light of day.

On a general point, it annoys me when people blame the testers when this shit happens, build the shit right in the first place is usually a better approach...

I got some top entertainment out of this trick over lunchtime - ('Hey Fred you've got an iPhone haven't you?', 'Yes', 'Is it locked?', 'Yes', 'Can I have it for a minute?', 'Erm, I suppose so....', and 15 seconds later I hand them back an unlocked iPhone - after a bit of practice you can do it really quickly) - until someone pointed out that I was effectively hacking into corporate devices, at which point it became a security weakness and we've had to advise everyone in our organisation who uses an iPhone to be extra vigilant until the exploit is patched.

There is a limit to what you can do, as any press of the home button relocks the device, but anything that you can access from the contacts screen is fair game. Certainly I was able to access call history, address books, telephone functionality, and via 'share contact' I could send emails as the person whose phone it was, contact cards, and SMS messages.

Enough to warrant putting out an advisory to our users.

No, it's absolutely restricted to the tabs on the contact screen, (you can't navigate to anything else and you can't use the home button), which isn't too bad, it's in no way a total compromise of the device. But the ability to make calls, send emails and SMS messages is a bit of a problem. Plus of course an address book can hold an awful lot of personal information about lots of people too.

And some folks might like to keep their call history private too I suppose :hat:

Yeah you basically get a blank email, you have to use the 'share contact as email' functionality, which auto-attaches a .vcf file, but you can delete that and just write whatever email and subject line and text body you want, CC and BCC in whoever you want, and so on.

Full outgoing email functionality, basically. There's no way to access the actual email account though, i.e. inbox.

It even includes the 'Sent from Fred's iPhone' message as an attachment.

From a security point of view it is a bit of a dreadful fucking clanger.

iPhone 5 32gb ordered which will have 4GB. 1GB a month data which seemed stingy until I checked my 2 year old iPhone 4 and combined up and down I've only transferred 1.87gb in that period. So no panic there then.

Waiting list is a month.

Only phoned up to chance some details but they said I could have a new phone so cool.

Unless you're on a really expensive EE tariff, it won't bring any benefits, because you'll still be on 3G.

Edit -- a month?! For a six month old phone! Jesus.

They told me that I would have 4G. Tariff is approx the same as my old one.

+ up to a month. I assume the reality is that they don't carry stock of the model I want and it's sent on-demand from Apple.

I experienced the same quote when I upgraded my daughter to a 4S earlier this year — it was "could take up to a month, but in reality it's likely to be 5-10 working days". Maybe it's a standard message as they have to order in, as you say, and it could in theory take up to a month.
