Watched Tintin tonight. Bloody great! I knew it would be, though. Not sure why it took me so long to see it.

A decent article on Cracked today.

I'm particularly glad to see that Ed Harris really is batshit crazy.

Prometheus: Gorgeous. Some really stupid moments and characters, but in the end it really paid of just for being so beautiful to look at.

Oslo, 31 August: Simple and honest film about an ex-addict trying to recover but really wanting to. All in the course of one day. Recommended.

Seems that Del Toro got Valve's permission to ask Ellen Mclain to voice the computer in the trailer as a nod to Portal.

Watched Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness, the effects have got better but at the expense of the acting and plot.

Also watched Dredd, not that impressed, once again they have defined part of the plot and many of the shots around charging people more in cinemas for 3D. Shame really as if you know the comics well like I do, you can see a lot of the graffiti on the block walls that pays homage to comic book characters. So at some levels they made an effort.

Indeed. By, amongst others, Spielberg.

And, bizarrely, failing. For reasons I listed in't review. I remember being dead excited about Super 8 before it came out. Utter disappointment it was. It just hadn't been baked near long enough, and nothing was earned. I've been reading an excellent biography on Spielberg which is pretty even handed. (It rips into Raiders somewhat, incredibly, and Pete-Fond War of the Worlds, but defends his popcorn angle.) The stuff in there explaining why Close Encounters of the Third Kind works, with all the thoughtful grounding that's done is fascinating. Basically each encounter is heralded by shots of the commonplace. Toys scattered on the floor. A McDonald's sign. The grid of light that is area tract housing from afar at night. And then they prove the visual foundation of what the aliens interfere with in low key - but gripping - spectacle. It earns each level of upping the spectacle.

And there's a lot of self in Spielberg's movies. ET was his brooding for children. Close Encounters was not only born from his own fascination with life out there but from the trauma of his parent's divorce. Both achieved the religious feel-good heights because they didn't have a villain (the government men are misguided, but they are still for us) and the people in it were normal, average people you strongly identified with. Elliott in ET is the average boy, written with great care.

The children and characters of Super 8 are cardboard loudmouths who trade in quips. Abrams (and I do love his Star Trek stuff) has none of the instinctive emotional grasp and care of Spielberg. TCH.

Terrible corrupt Terrorist, drug dealing, kiddie fiddlers have made available from online retailers the latest Brook Bond and Stumpies go for a walk films.

This awful development no doubt coincides with the DVDs that are sent out to voters for the self congratulatory circle jerk Hollywood inflicts on everyone each year...still the quality of both 'releases' isn't bad at all (in fact they're pretty excellent).

Steven Spielberg a Biography by Joseph McBride. Alas, it doesn't cover that time he added Ewoks to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

i saw Safety Not Guaranteed today. It's got april from parks and recreation in a lead role. It's about some magazine people doing a story on someone who placed an ad about going back in time. It's sweet and heartwarning but nothing out of this world. It's more a film about relationships than anything else. Worth renting or streaming but don't make an effort to see it.

Yep! And Gatsby interests me! Also, that Wall Street film with DiCaprio - directed by Scorsese. Most exciting year for film in a good while in my opinion. Big year for DiCaprio as well actually!

Watched Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows last night. Enjoyed it, but it does make Sherlock out to be some kind of psychic superhero, particularly the scene on the train.

Yeah, it was a bit overdone. It was too long, as well. And generally not as good, either in plot, pace, or characters, as the first one.

How many films are on that list? Other Dave's top ten songs ever famously contains about eighty songs.
