I have just attended a speed awareness course...

One of the things they told us to do is to put 5 ICE numbers on out phones.

I challenged this as most 'smart phones' have a pin lock of some sort. How would emergency services check your phone?

Thanks

The emergency services have a code that they can type in to override any security thing?

It's like the button they have to turn traffic lights green.

So are you aware of how fast you were going now Kov?

I am curious how they can get at your contacts with locked phones

They can't - at least, not easily. Mobiles have had PIN locks since the very early days, though, so it's not a new thing.

I certainly wouldn't bother doing it.

Also: all non-smart phones.

My phone allows for some text to be added to the lock screen so you could maybe add something there but, yeah, the whole idea is massively flawed.

Emergency services don't have time to look at your phone, but if you end up deid it makes life easier for whoever's job it is to find out who you are & inform your next of kin. Because of that & in case I lose my phone I've my home number displayed on my locked screen.

This thread has made me think to stick my email address on the lock screen now in case I lose mine and anyone cares enough not to steal it so that's good.

I'm going to install a self destruct mode in my phone so that if anything happens to me, it'll blow up and leave no trace.

What's the threshold?

Most likely yes. It's the only way I can be sure that my numbers and pictures will be safe.

Is your phone a fashionable smartphone with a case? Put a card with the ICE details on it. Or, put it in your wallet. This is nothing new, bikers have been doing it for years.

I don't particularly want people reading through my texts, or sending texts on my behalf.

MrsChap, for example, would read all of my texts if given the chance.

No, but it stops little scrots who may have found/stolen the phone from using it, i don't understand why anyone wouldn't lock their phones, in my mind it is the same as locking your front door, a sensible precaution.

I don't either. I am a little more careful about leaving it on tables though, after Grim... told all my facebook friends that I like small boys' willies.

I have mine on a 10 minute PIN lock, which protects against loss/theft but not against me leaving it on a table if I've done something with it in the last 10 minutes.

Last night at the pub I went for a piss and when I came back my mate had taken a picture of himself and set it as the wallpaper.

He does this EVERY FUCKING TIME he gets the chance to and I never fucking learn.

In all fairness I always send saucy texts to his missus from his phone when he forgets to take his with him to the bogs.

If you're worried about your Mrs reading your texts, I don't know what to say!

As for your mates updating your Facebook, heh! That's part of the fun.

Controversial fact about me: If I notice you have a PIN on your phone lock screen, I secretly say "tosser" in my head. I don't know why, I just think it's a very self-important thing to do. I realise that's ridiculous, but it's my feelings, man!

Don't phones bugger up if you enter the wrong pin several times in a row? I've done this quite a few times to a friend.

That's quite unreasonable man, a lot of folks get confidential business emails on their phones their days, stuff they're obliged to take 'reasonable steps to protect' on pain of gross misconduct charges.

You can't class someone doing what their employer requires of them as being 'self-important', surely?

So yes, it is ridiculous.

I use a PIN for three reasons -

- By default, the Galaxy Note uses a swipe to unlock, which was too easy to trigger as you put it into your phone
- This default also displays text messages on the lock screen as they come in. Not so much having something to hide, but not wanting people to read my texts at work if I'm not at my desk
- To hide my stash of Mrs WTB photos.

I should add that my brother and a few close mates use lock screen PINs. Still love them. But still think "tosser" when they tap their secret little tosser numbers in because their ittle wittle phones are so pwecious!

It depends, you can set either a THERMONUCLEAR SELF DESTRUCT option or just a 'lock out for a few minutes' option IIRC, certainly on my iPhone 3GS there was an option to set 10 incorrect attempts to initiate a self-wipe.

But anyway! Having work stuff on your personal phone is a whole other topic! It's something I'd never have in my life. Work is for work. Get a second phone, enjoy your home life, etc.

I don't have a 'work mobile', I could get a HTC One X/iPhone4S through work and it wouldn't cost me a single penny (handset, calls, texts, data - all paid for), but I want to retain the freedom to do exactly what I want with my phone so I choose to pay for my own and not to have to worry about any usage guidelines. (I mean, what if I'm out at the pub and I want to Google nude pictures of Juno Temple to show my mate? (This absolutely didn't happen last night by the way.) I just feel more comfortable having my own phone on my own contract.)

However, inevitably, there are a few folks at work who have my mobile number and personal email details, because at the end of the day that's the job I work in and I can't just drop off the radar for a week at a time on holiday in case something royally breaks and it's a key system that I'm the best at fixing.

So, it therefore follows that my personal mobile does end up containing emails and texts that shouldn't have any chance of finding themselves in the public domain because they contain confidential/commercial information, which is why it's got a PIN lock on it.

And nudey pictures of Mrs AE.

It's probably more about the nudey pictures, in all honesty.

I have a pin on my phone, but it's only set to come on after an hour of inactivity. Enough not to annoy when picking it up and using it during the day, be hopefully enough to have the phone locked if I lose it or it gets nicked.

An hour is into the danger zone for me, you could lose a phone and/or have it pinched and have it accessed in an hour before you even notice.

I give a shit though if someone finds the phone, loads up Google Play and starts buying shitloads of apps/music/films on my debit card which they would totally be able to do.

Putting in an actual PIN number did totally drive me nuts in the past, I'm much happier with the Android swipe pattern thing as it just feels a lot less annoying to enter every time.

Nope. I don't know if that's standard or if I've somehow disabled it somewhere along the line mind.

You can do a PIN far quicker than a swipe when you get good at it though, I had a swipe pattern that used all 9 points and I was pretty handy at it, but I can do my 7 number PIN far quicker.
