The built in fridge freezer we inherited when we bought our house has pissed me off since the day we moved it. It’s too small and the freezer part of it ices up every 2 months so badly I usually have to take a hammer and chisel to it to break the bulk of the ice off before turning it off for 12 hours.

So we finally decided to buy a new “American style" one, we refrained from getting the built in ice or water dispenser as they take too much room in the fridge.

So off to Curry’s yesterday, I paid for it and they tell me it can be delivered today, they also tell me they will get rid of the old one for free. Finally they say the old one needs to be defrosted.

So last night we empty the fridge and put all the food in to what is our so called conservatory, which at this time of year is colder that most fridges so no problem so far.

The new one is delivered at 11am today, and the delivery guys tell me not to turn it on for 8 hours to “let the gas settle”

So at 7pm I turn it on and have my first look at the manual, the first thing I read (no mention of waiting 8 hours to turn it on) is that once turned on I need to wait another 8 hours before putting food into it!

They never tell you any of this when you buy the bloody thing, good job I have my sub Artic conservatory to keep all the food cool!

I think our chest style freezer had to be run for 8 hours when we first turned it on, and then that was on Super Freeze Down mode.

i fail to see what harm can happen to the food if you put it in. it will only get colder.

Perhaps that's what meant by not putting food in for 8 hours is letting the gas settle?

the gas is in the pipes. closed off from the food. should make no difference.

I'm pretty certain that when we got our new freezer last year we just turned it on, set the temperature and slapped the food in right away. Presumably the manufacturer is erring on the side of caution, recommending that the freezer is down to the proper temperature before putting the food in, to avoid the tiny possibility of something partially thawing, then refreezing and causing splat gore death carnage when it's finally defrosted and eaten.

Gas needing to settle has nothing to do with food - it just makes sure you don't strain the compressor.

Yes there was defiantly 2 different reasons for waiting 8 hours, one to settle the gas, the other was to let the fridge and freezer reach temperature. The freezer had made ice cubes after 4 hours, but my wife was insistent we do what it said in the manual, got out and played the pregnancy card

Same if you move an aircon unit. My aircon specifically says that if it has been transported it must be left it an upright position for 12 hours or "damage may occur to the compressor".

I often have to play the inverse pregnancy card: "you're pregnant, so shush"

I hadn't considered it would be turned on for some reason.

Pretty much how it works! She tends to play it on small things that piss her off, Like I let the kitten jump on the bed first thing. She doesn't like it so played the card this morning

That said they want £29 delivery and there is no mention of taking the old one away, that would cost me another £30.

I don't belive that RRP either as Currys would have show it as well.

I would love a massive fridge, so that I can store more food before I throw it away, but no space in the flat.

Both mine cost less than half that though. Actually one was a freebie.

Massive fridge freezers are awesome. I fought Mrs C for 7 long years resisting buying one; for something costing that much I want two wheels, an engine and an ignition key, but when the old one eventually started going on the blink with stuff going off etc., I was left with little choice.

This thing is the size of my first digs, but it never frosts up, it looks amazing in the kitchen (brushed stainless steel), it always has ice cubes, is cheap to run and we never have to chuck out food now. No more trapesing back and forth to the garage either; it stores all food, beer, wine and frozen food with consummate ease. As ever, Teh Wimmins are always right.

I thought we had bought middle of the price range, there were a lot of fridges costing £1200 or more.

Even though there is just the two of us I have a small chest freezer, a big upright freezer and a small fridge in the garage as well as this new one in the kitchen.

The small chest freezer I’ve had for 10 years and the plan is to turn this off now we have more space in the new one, the big freezer is full and we always use this as we tend to spend £500 3 or 4 times a year and fill it with meat and fish. The small fridge was something I bought in the summer as I held a big dept. barbecue and I didn’t have enough room to store all the meat without freezing it. I would say that this is the biggest indulgence as now its just full of wine and beer.

At present we have hardly filled the fridge part of the new one that said we never bought loads of food for the fridge as the last one was small and crap so I guess that will change over time. The freezer part is full and will hold 10 days or so worth of meals for us, so that means less trips to the garage.

Hopefully I will get to turn off something but I doubt it as the more space you have the more you fill!

I pay about £20 in Stroud at a nice unisex salon. The main thing I like about getting my hair cut is having my hair washed by, and getting a head massage from, an attractive young lady.

Getting your hair cut by a bloke is a bit odd.

Yeah, I know what you mean mate - both our garage fridge and freezer have stuff in them. I don't think Mrs C can bring herself to turn 'em off...

(To be fair, it's the way forward in summer, for beer BBQs etc.).

I'm not even going to say how much our fridge freezer cost, as it is too ludicrous to quote. I felt a bit better when I learned that my business partner had spent twice even what I did, fuck me.
