A huge fire has destroyed the historic Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare*.

Dozens of firefighters fought to tackle the blaze which took hold of the partly wooden pier in the North Somerset seaside resort at about 0700 BST.

No-one was injured in the fire, though black smoke and flames were said to be visible from as far away as Cardiff.

Gangsters, or insurance, or developers or something like that. Whoever profits from it burning down, anyway. Neither Scarborough nor Brighton were accidents, were they?

I did one of the stupidest things I've ever done at Queston, recently. I was on the beach with a few friends, enjoying a boozy picnic and building a few sandcastles, when I decided I fancied a swim. It was getting close to 5pm, so the tide had been out for quite a while, but I gaily suggested that we just walk the mile or so it'd take to catch up with it. Durrrrrrr.

Long story short, the two of us who went got back almost 2 hours later, having waded through an incredible knee-high mire of clay and quicksand, which we almost drowned in at several points, and only having managed to enjoy the water (which was rushing past our feet even as we paddled) for all of about three seconds.

King-size death-wish.

When I visited Brighton, I was told that the local legend is that the mobsters who own the shiny pier had the other one torched after it was restored. But I thought that was obviously just malicious gossip and don't believe a word of it, and please don't glue my locks, thanks. :attitude:

Having been outside in Cardiff city centre at 7am and just now, I didn't see any smoke. Which must mean there was no fire.

Im suprised they didnt change it to Ubér to attract the younger demogrpahic.

Anyone see that tagline 'The grand pier: Then and Now' with a picture of it recently and also a picture of it on fire, bit of a kick in the balls.

I know we all wanted you to make that joke, but you should be stronger. Don't be so quick to give in to pier pressure.

People on this board walk a fine line between excellence and awfulness with their bad puns.

It had a wireless network port protected by a 128 byte quay.
