So, I took my camera and flash out on my mate's birthday night-out to beloved regualar indie bopping haunt Twisted by Design, in upstairs Dempseys.

Cheers guys, always means a lot when peeps like. :)

Shooting such stuff at night is damn hard when it comes to people. You've got to have the shutter speed at 1/250 for people in motion to be sharp, so this means a high ISO and a narrow aperture. For the wet wash of lights on the ground - handily provided by a huge BBC News 24 screen in the Hayes, Cardiff - I needed to shoot on my 85mm, to get a close cropped shot of the action without distraction of outside clutter. This meant that my already low depth of field of f/2.5 was razor thin, probably the equivilent of one foot of focus.

I was there for half an hour at least, trying to get the shot from two locations. You can't use auto-focus in such conditions, so I had to manual focus and choose a point where someone in passing would step through the centre. It's remarkable how reluctant people are to oblige. Some seemed to be headed there but upon seeing me swerved. Others had baggy trousers that looked stupid. Some had big clunky shopping bags. I nearly got one of a dapper chap pinking his umbrella on the stones but it was out of focus. I nearly cried.

And four-fifths of the time when I did get the timing right, the BBC screen changed to near-black or incredibly boring colours.

Finally got something though. The total expedition took an hour and a half in the pouring rain with a carrier bag wrapped around the camera. I got two shots I'm thrilled with and two contenders out of over 200.

Man. Street photography is busting my ass.

Help needed! Possible fame awaits, at least a credit on the photo.

MrsA needs a photo of the London riots to be used in an internal course as part of a (major distance learning educational institution - Shy Ed). If you could help her, or know someone who could, let me know via PM and I'll buy you a beer or something. She also wants some other photos portraying emotion, families, self etc. Do people mind if she looks through your flickr/whatever accounts? Will contact if there is any that are likely to be used. Everyone will receive a credit.

Much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Lovely stuff, Pete!
I feel bad, because it seems lately that you're holding this thread up almost singlehandedly.
I'm longing for some good snowfall conditions so I can break out the macro lens and have another go at snowflakes.

The Flatiron Building at Front St E. and Church St, last Saturday evening. Note the low cloud obscuring the tops of the buildings.

Been doing some more messing around with the GoPro camera. It's really is an absolute gem of a little thing that just does what it's for and does it all really well.

I stuck it on top of a kitchen timer, put it on the bedroom windowsill (facing outwards! :hat: ) and shot a time lapse:

Best "enjoyed" at high 720 or 1080

Wow! Very nice, you've got me tempted to get one now.

Meaty, love the Flatiron building. That's actually a photography legend, being famous for the Stieglitz photo which helped turn photographs into being considered art.

Anyway... time for some fear.

Indeed, but that's the Fuller Building in New York. The Toronto one is still a popular shot for photos - while I was buying my new backpack in the outdoorsy goods store across the street from it, the store guy noticed a bride and groom with a photographer making their way along to get their pictures taken in front of it.

A friend of mine asked if I knew anything about cameras, but I don't. However I said that I knew people who did. So the question is, if a person has around £500 to spend on a Digital SLR, is the Canon EOS 650d a decent choice? I am assuming it will be used for general family picture taking (landscapes, family group shots, portraits of kiddies and the like).

I'd maybe question if a DSLR is actually what they should buy. Do they want a new hobby or just to take better pictures?

The question was specifically about SLRs...so I am assuming more the hobbyist line.

In that case I don't really know as I have a Nikon. It seems to be that Canon and Nikon are both good systems so whichever he chooses it won't be a dud. Standard advice is for him to actually go to a camera shop and get hands on with a few.

Not sure where to put this. It is pictures I have taken with a camera, sort of. I'd start a video thread but I think I'd be the only one posting in it.

It's just a quick and fairly lazy edit I did with some footage I shot over the last couple of days. Mostly I was just trying to get to grips with video editing software:

https://vimeo.com/55549518

Looking forward to spending more time trying to do some decent edits and getting out and about to different locations.

Love the bit flying over the tram. There's a very nice floaty feeling to the footage due to the speed of the quadrocopter, wouldn't be the same with anything else I don't think.

Very good mate, I think once you edit in clips from new locations for more variety it will really improve.

Excellent technical achievement in everything though, dude. Great stuff.

Cheers mate. It's good fun to fly, at least it is now that I have some faith that it might not just plummet to the ground in a spendy fashion.

Already eyeing up different quad frames which have gyro-stabilised gimbals for the cameras :nerd: Seen some amazing results from some of those.
