I heartily recommend the film "Bedazzled", obv, and the lesser known "Dawg". "Double Whammy" and "Aria" both score on the Craster scale, too.

What's the difference between dialling into and finding the details of someone's phone messages 'because you can' and putting your hand into someone's mail box and finding the details of someone's correspondence 'because you can'? Is there a difference if you just think to try your luck at taking a celebrity/murder victim's correspondence because it's on paper?

He really annoyed me in About a Boy. Mind you, About a Boy was the first Nick Hornby book that I read and found tedious, and he went downhill from there. I've gone right off Liz Hurley since she started shagging Shane Warne though.

The film is excellent, you fool. The character in the first bits is on a par with Trent from Swingers.

Yes. Because rich/famous people deserve. Because they are rich/famous.

Isn't opening someone else's post illegal? So phone hacking should be on a par.

that's what I was driving at. The two things seem very similar in essence and resulting invasion in privacy.

They should make all voicemail messages the property of the queen until they've been listened to by the correct recipient.

More charges?

Quote:
One problem for News International, however, is the wording of section 79 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, the hacking legislation under which eight senior News of the World journalists and executives have already been charged. It provides for the corporate prosecution of a company which commits such an offence, and also of any director whose neglect or connivance led to the crime.

Fleet Street Fox got another shot in at Leveson, complaining that it was the reason Britain had dropped in the free press world rankings.

I thought it was the cover-up, the law breaking and the corruption of police and politicians, but no, apparently it is because we are investigating it.

Sky News are taking great pleasure in revealing that The Mirror is now in a bit of bother. I can totally get on board with Piers Morgan going to jail for a bit.

Forgive my naivity, but why are people tlaking about "The Freedom of the Press"? I thought the whole thing about Leveson was that some people broke the law, and the inquiry was set up to investigate this. And now people seem to have shifted into talking about how statutory controls of the press are a terrible thing, which, they are, but not entirely relevant when people have broken the laws that already exist. And many people seem to be mired on this small detail.

It's a strawman, innit. If you can't legitimately complain about Leveson (given that they acted like corrupt bastards and were caught doing it), you pretend it's some other issue to drum up support, and freedom of speech makes for a great choice.

't'ain't just that though, dude.

There are some criminal laws, which got broken, and that's fine and we can all cope with that being dealt with by the police. Phone "hacking" and contempt of court being the two most obvious.

The problem is that the press can and do go full out on the "publish and be damned" motto on the basis that they know most people won't be able to sue them for libel or apply for injunctions, and in any event, suing them for libel doesn't always really clear your name and if it's a privacy issue then it's too late once it's published, and you've had to go through months of shit all the while this stuff's being published about you. Something needs to happen to prevent the press doing that in the first place. The PCC has signally failed to do so, so someone with a big stick needs to come in and make the fuckers behave.

Even something like Moseley's suggestion of a requirement that they notify the subject before the publication would be a step forward, but to get the buggers to comply even with that there'd need to be a legal requirement for it. Cos they sure as hell don't even comply with the toothless bollocks the PCC comes up with.

I think I can come to the conclusion that journalists are mostly self serving, conceited and actually not terribly good at their jobs.

I think pointing at journalists rather than editors and media moguls is probably a little wide of the mark. Not that there's not plenty of blame to go around, of course.

Sorry, I was thinking about stuff I've read on twitter, the howls of anguish rather than the events leading up to what caused the report. See, the issue is already being diverted and I'm aware of it.

"BUT WHAT ABOUT THIS!" they cry, putting the can of petrol and the matches ebhind their back and pointing away from the burning building at a dog doing a poo.

More self-regulation it is. Well done, Leveson, what a massive waste of time.*

*Health warning - I have only skim read the exec summary so he may be proposing statutory underpinnings to this but I can't see it.

From Torygraph:
Quote:
"What is proposed here is independent regulation of the press organised by the press, with a statutory verification process to ensure that the required levels of independence and effectiveness are met.”

So all it's doing is sayng, yes you have to be a bit more independent than the PCC, but you have no binding powers and are not required to have any binding powers and we're not giving you any.

Haha.

By the way, I've been following the trial of Brooks and Coulson, and they really couldn't look more guilty. Their explanations are absolutely hilarious.

"Thurlbeck told the Guardian that they were forced to wear the prison uniform involving a “cornbeef pink T-shirt and matching tracksuit bottoms” for the first two weeks, reported that their exercise consisted of walking in circles in the prison yard, and the “Belmarsh diet” had helped him lose a stone."

1/3 off for pleading guilty, serve half the sentence and then some off for good behaviour I guess.
