One of my friends loves Resident Evil more than anything.. and he didn't like this.

Not sure whether he's put it on a pedestal but he's normally very forgiving. I'm not holding out much hope for this.

You miserable gits. I've played the demo and wasn't impressed but I don't doubt that Capcom can pull this off at the eleventh hour.

Still time for a last minute day 1 patch to make it good.

Strange that no ones mentioned any of the other game modes either. I'll wait for the Edge review...

Dimirill is right. The disposable ink for saving the game ruined it for me.

The fixed camera making hard-impossible to aim killed it for me.

So do I want "Infinite Ammo" as an option? It's right there from the start.

Do I want to allow "Agent Hunt"? Fucks knows. What's that all about - i'll just check the manual. Um, nothing in those four flimsy pieces of paper. Oh, there's an online manual. I'll just fuck off for ten minutes and read up on it before deciding. (fucking online manuals).

Sharn't bother I'll just not allow it so some cunt can't ruin my game.

Tutorial done and it's been all QTE's and very little game. It's also the OTT Resi of the movies fame with lots of impossibly exploding nonsense and flying helicopters and crashing and shit. It's not been scary.

...since Resi 3 I suppose...

The lowest difficulty performs all the QTE's for you. Interesting.

Also, there's a great line right near the start. In a sewer.

I hope your not playing on the PS3 with a legitimate downloaded version because if you are then the latest patch breaks it and Capcoms answer is to delete the 10gig download , re-download it , and dont put the patch on

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... psn-copies

Quote:
Resident Evil 6's day-one PlayStation 3 patch has stopped downloaded copies of game from loading, which renders the game unplayable.

Compatibility issues between the patch and legitimately-downloaded PSN copies can be circumvented by a workaround, Capcom told IGN, while the developer readies a fresh patch.

"The temporary fix to ensure people can enjoy Resident Evil 6 today as intended is to ask those people to uninstall the game (only if they originally saw an error message) and reinstall the game," a Capcom spokesperson said. "This time they won't be prompted to download the patch and the game will load."

But anyone using this workaround will be left unable to play online with others.

"Please note, however, these people won't be able to play against disc owners on a temporary basis," Capcom added. "We are working with SCEE (Sony) to fix this issue and a patch is imminent to fix the issue."

The issue also blocks RE.net, the game's online stat-tracking and reward service.

Disc-based PS3 copies of the game remain unaffected - the problem only hits fans who pre-paid and downloaded a digital copy.

Ouch. Although, who actually buys a digital version of a brand new game on PSN? Surely you're gonna get bent over on price?

Actually the difference is probably at its least for new games, they seem to stay full price on there for ages.

Actually Sony have a plan which almost makes sense in that if your a PS plus customer you'll get 10% off the retail price of new games and they are trying to get them set so its available same day.

I know that you'll always get a discount online or via the supermarkets but for example I bet Game was selling it for full RRP on release day - if you can get 10% off that and not have to visit the shop I could see some people taking that up.

Thing is, "RRP" in Game is £40 whereas on PSN it's closer to £45, so you'll probably pay the same with Plus. But then you have to factor in the whole boxed and digital malarky.

Anyway, who gives a shit. Is it any good or what?!

Actually I think it was £40 on PSN (and discount for PSN+ AND the DLC maps all in?). Their prices seem to be shifting downwards from what I've seen.

Just for extra context, retail copies had been available to preorder online for ~£30. Some people even got their copies early.#

If you can be arsed with a bit of hassle, you can buy it for under £26 too, now.

I played the demo last night which was good in that it gave you a decent shot at all three game types. What's less good was the actual game.

The military styled game-type suffered because it sort of presents itself as GoW style third person shooter, but the cover mechanics are so fucking awful that it instantly seems crap by comparison. The camera's also too close for this game style to work so it's a total chore.

The more trad style RE game (as I understand it anyway) was the best but suffered weirdly from being too easy. You could just run past almost all of the enemies or just charge into a load of them while spamming the melee attack and you never really got hurt. The general game mechanics seem best suited for this game style though so it 'wins' more because they never bothered tweaking the other game types than due to any inherent quality here.

The third game type with the guy carrying the immunity was really uneven which ruined it. Obviously it suffered from bad cover mechanics in general but things weren't too bad against 'normal' enemies. The wheels come off when someone mutates into the snuffly hedgehog looking fuckers which moved quickly, fired wide ranging attacks off constantly and only went down if you hit them multiple times with the most brutal weapons. So any time one of those popped up you'd just get knocked down over and over again while trying to get a bead on the thing with your slowest and most powerful kit. You get to a point where you've got a couple of those things running around and loads of normal machine gun-toting guys taking potshots at you from cover and you're pretty fucked. You can ignore the constant barrage of gunfire and focus on taking down the hedgehog cunt or put up with being constantly battered by the hedgehog while trying to whittle down the other fuckers. Either way, it was boring and annoying.

Also, what's with the fucking targetting dot wandering all over the place? Presumably it's supposed to increase the challenge and simulate your character's arms getting tired or something? It's fucking bullshit; I'm playing a game so I want to hit where I'm actually aiming please.

Note that I haven't really played any RE games because the terrible tank controls and general clunkiness of the original games put me off the franchise. Plus the demos of the more recent ones made it just seem like a hateful mish-mash of competing concepts so you can gauge my comments from that.

You can, and should, set the targeting to the laser right from the off.

The Leon campaign has been really quite good at the moment but i'm not very far into it. You quickly get used to the camera angle - which bothered me in the demo too - but doesn't when you've been playing for an hour.

There's something wrong here. It's got fack all to do with how close the camera is to the character it's something to do with how the camera behind moves. I can't pin my finger on it. It's not smooth enough or locked into position or something. Dead Space 2 had it nailed down. Resi 4 did too. But there's something, something not right with it. Hmmm.

There's a lovely nodding wink to 28 Days Later in Leon's campaign that's pretty cool though. Plus, some gruesome deaths are back. Well, I've seen two. One was a corker.

But it's also picked up two terrible modern gaming conventions that fuck me off:

1) Near death? The screen starts screaming in red obscuring just about everything. It doesn't add to the experience, it doesn't give it anymore atmosphere and neither does it lead to panic. It's fucking annoying and reminds you you're playing a computer game.

2) And the co-op craze has lead to latest annoyance. Not letting you die. Get your energy sucked out of you and you've got a second chance if your partner can rescue you by running over and, seemingly, punching you in the shoulder. "Ah that's better" rather than "ow, what did you do that for bitch? I'm dying here". This second chance also means its actually quite hard to die (assuming you didn't elect for the infinite ammo option anyway, in which case I imagine you'll never experience this anyway) so there's little worry about getting into a scrap cause someone is bound to pick you up. Gears, Ghost Recon, etc every co-op game now has this. Games are too fecking easy. Stupid fecking games. Kill me, and kill me for good. That way, I'll treasure this life and I'll be more cautious about what I'm doing. I'll get immersed. I'll want to conquer you. I will conquer you. Make it too easy and no matter how good your game is I'll probably just turn it off cause I've been wading through your content with no challenge. Achievements, finding stuff and collecting junk ain't going to interest me at all. I want to play your game just make it more challenging. Cunts.

Urgh. They do the near death screen crap now? I always liked how in Resi your condition would be conveyed via your character being less mobile. Limping and stuff.

I'm glad they've brought back the gruesome death sequences. I've been hit by a train, eaten by a zombie (stomach eating an' all), eaten by a dog and dragged off etc. Great stuff.

If I was judging the game on what I've played of Leon's campaign I'd be seriously wondering what the big hoo-har was about.

I didn't mind at the time because it was so good. I loved it, in fact. And the second one. Going back a couple of years ago it was horrible, but I still maintain they're in my top games EVER EVER regardless.

It'll be a £5 bargain bin buy for me... just to see it with my own eyes. :'(

Resi 4 was linear, right? Well, this is a straight line.

I've figured out the problem with the camera. The character is moving slightly too fast. The whole pace of the game needs taking down a notch. It might have even been better if, gasp, the player was routed to the spot whilst shooting. Less zombies and a slower pace.

You want stats?

Game time: 4:31'37"
Leon's Campaign completed 28%
Other campaigns completed 0%
Zombies killed: 469
Other types of baddies: 36

So that's over a hundred zombies per hour. Startling, I know. Plus, I've just done a quarter of one campaign? This game is going to be huge and I doubt they'll be any repetition of environment at all since they're all set in different parts of the world. It looks the business, as well.

As to whether it's any good or not, I'd say that it is (and if you're a Resi fan, I doubt you'll be disappointed even though you might not be blown away). It's certainly not a disaster. I figure the repetition of just being an action shooter is probably whats going to tire you out over time. There's been a few puzzles here and there but mainly it's blast, blast, shooty, pew, pew.

Soooo, erm, that's it so far.

You want more?

What about those blue medals from Resi 4 & 5 being dotted about? Yup, they're back.

What about the "What are you buying" guy? Nope. Instead you just pick up weapons on-route and as directed. Can you level the weapons up? Not that I've seen at all. What you do get are Skill Points you use to buy Skills (Duh). Like: better chance of critical, faster reload, partner doesn't help you up, blah blah blah. You can equip 3 at any one time and level up the skill for maximum tediousness. So is that better than levelling up your weapons? Fucking fuck no. It's boring. There's a massive list of text to select your Skill. It's too boring by far to read them all. You'll probably just piss your points on the dearest one in your price range.

Anything else? When you're knocked down you go into a CoD-like Final Stand. I've been rescued 22 times. Average time she's taken to rescue me: 1:43 seconds. LET ME DIE IF IM INCOMPETENT.

Moaning is fun, init?
