Good luck!

My pet employment lawyer at work last week intimated that you can be 'fired' or let go without having to give a reason if you've been working there less than a year. Obviously you need to pay their notice period, and any other dues, but that's what he seemed to say.

Before some time in April this year, it was one year to qualify to claim for unfair dismissal. Now it is two.

Indeed. So if they've been there under a year, you can kick 'em out, as long as you follow your company's own processes and procedures.

Yup. Makes it a lot easier to "performance manage" people out in the first two years, as you don' t have to worry about not following the process correctly. Your only concern would be some form of discrimination claim.

I'm still failing to see the rationale behind the move from 1 to 2 years, but then the Tories just work on the premise that anything that the CBI wants must be good.

Not really, no - "unfair dismissal" means not being fired in accordance with the correct processes. So you can just fire them in the first 2 years and ntto bother about process too much. Is my understanding.

From my vague memories, that doesn't sound incorrect. The fun times is when someone has been there as a temporary employee through an agency that then becomes a member of staff within the company. The question is when did they start work there?

Amazing scenes…

The guy who is skating on thin ice here has just had a receipt drop out of his pocket. It shows that he spent £85 on groceries at 10:30 this morning when he claimed he was with a client. Someone has handed it in to the manager and they’re furious!

I bet you nothing will happen to him…

Nah, this guy is all over the place. Aggressive, hardly ever shows up, doesn't know what he's doing... all that and more.

But still.. I reckon he could be found over a dead body, holding an ax with bits of skin and blood in between his teeth and I reckon he'd get away with it. This place annoys me.

Is it possible to break your thumb with a drawing pin and a ribbon?

Essentially, there was a balloon tied to a drawing pin (one of the raised type, you normally see on maps with thread on them in police dramas) with some ribbon and my daughter wanted a balloon, I was distracted, so I just pulled on the thread, expecting it to come out easily. It didn't! I had to tug really hard! and then pin went flying into my thumb hard enough to draw blood, and there is also a nice bruise there.

A few hours later I noticed it was painful to bend it past about 30 degrees from straight (just above the knuckle). I really can't be arsed getting it x-rayed (what can they do for a broken thumb any way?) to find out that it's just bruised and I'm just being a bit cissy after my knee (waiting for the results of my MRI on that)

You might have stabbed a ligament, but I'd be surprised if you'd done anything worth going to hospital about.

With the bruising and timeframe, I'm still leaning towards ligament stabbage. But you never know, he could be on a twofer!
