Really? I'd heard rumblings about it months ago. I'm sure we discussed it on here.

Reckon that flash model is a genius move so close to Christmas.

It's a shame they don't offer slightly bigger flash based models, it should load games a fair bit quicker shouldn't it?

Huh. Either I missed it or I forgot. It's not exactly earth-shaking news, although it does provide a good jumping-on point for those of you who have been waiting for a cheaper unit.

I wouldn't bet on it. There's flash memory and then there's flash memory; the stuff inside a smartphone isn't anywhere near as fast as the stuff inside an SSD. The former stuff is a lot cheaper, and I reckon that's what Sony will be using. It's very like the low-end Xbox Arcade one that comes with a couple of gigs of flash.

12 GB is quite limiting too. Lots of PS3 games want to install 5-10 GB to the HDD before they are playable. I'd advise people to steer clear of that one unless they're absolutely sure it won't be a problem.

Edit -- except:

However, a hard drive can be added to this model at a later date if a user finds they end up needing it.

If, like the other PS3s, this new one takes standard 2.5" laptop disks then that's a nice option. You can probably buy HDDs off the shelf for less than Sony charges for the different models.

Was waiting for this to come along, want a blue ray player. Of course now they've made it a top loader, there's nowhere in my lounge to put the cunt.

1978 called, Sony... It wants it's stupid back.

If it takes standard laptop disks does that mean you could put an SSD in there?

Ah toploaders. They'll always remind me of the CD32

Yes. You can on the old models, too: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/14/gran- ... d-install/

Two SKUs are planned. The first is a 500GB high-end bundle that will retail for around the same price as the current 320GB machines. That will launch in the UK on September 28th, bundled with EA’s FIFA 13 that releases on the same day.

An entry-level 12GB SKU aimed at the family market will be released on October 12th. That will retail for around the same price as the current 160GB machine but will include more in the box.

Sony will not be setting an official RRP in the UK and will allow retail to determine its own pricing.
Gives you an idea of pricing. My guess is that these models must be cheaper to make (or else why bother), but (if MVC is right) Sony will keep prices at current levels through the rest of 2012 to milk Christmas sales. Then we'll see a price drop sometime in 2013.

Edit -- so that's £210 for the 500 GB model, going by Amazon's current price for the 320 GB model. Which is quite close to the WiiU's price point. Interesting.

That article also says the 500GB model is exclusive to GAME though. So probably more like £240-250 based on their current prices for 320GB+Game bundles.

Hmm, I'll see how much the Flashbased one weighs in at and maybe get me one of those.

They did this with the PS2 as well... Make a squatter unit, then require it to have more vertical room that the taller one by having a lid.

I can't remember the last time I turned on my PS3, it must be over a year ago.

Anybody want a PS3? It worked fine when I last used it, if a little noisy in the fan department, IIRC.

The last time I turned my PS3 on was to watch Captain America in 3D, before that.. to play Shadow of the Colossus. In fact, I should get round to completing that sometime soon.

But yeah, it doesn't get much use. I like the idea of a toploader though!

I turned it on to play Papo & Yo.

It's Incredible.

Oh, and to watch Piranha 3DD.

It's Incredible. For different reasons entirely.

Apparently you need to buy a bracket to be able to mount a SATA drive in this new one, presumably to encourage you to buy the Sony one, but give you the option to stick any drive in. No idea what the bracket will cost, I'd guess like £15.

Looks really cheap and flimsy, especially the pathetic sliding cover for the optical drive.

Here's an unboxing:

This whole "unboxing" trend gets on my tits, too. In fact, I don't think there's much on the internet that doesn't irritate me in some way, shape or form. I get a right arrow in the knee over it all.

But in this case it's a good way to see how flimsy the new model is. And that awful sliding drive cover gives me the chills.

Hmm, looking at it I'd say the top loader looks more 'kid proof' than a flimsy drawer that sticks out past the TV bench (like my 360).

That was pretty awesome when the cover slid over in a whoosh of plastic. I also liked when they turned it on and debated how loud it was against the silence.

Great stuff people with box.

But maybe worse than the existing PS3 which just has a teeny slot, like a car CD type thing.

Ah... I thought it was a shitty tray like the 360.

It's gash then.

That's because the game that coined it was only released last year.

Yep, just pointing out that being here for a couple of decades was irrelevant in this case.

What's the deal with the guy on the left? He doesn't say anything and just sits there looking gormless as fuck.

As for the console, it looks bloody awful. The sliding mechanism, urgh. The corrugated plastic on top ripe for collecting dust, double urgh.
