Which is no great shakes though. I don't understand the fear of phone contracts that is so prevalent on this forum. Everyone seems to forget the part where you don't have to spend money on phone calls and text messages. No "top-ups", etc. 18 months is bugger all as well, especially on the "common sense" route of going for every second iPhone model.

God forbid I should agree with myp but seriously, what in God's name are you talking about? Spend money on phone calls and text messages? Top-ups? "Common sense" route? It's like listening to my dad.

I probably use about ten or twenty minutes of calls a month and send about five texts a week. I use very little mobile data, but then a couple of days a year I have cause to want to use a lot, including via tethering to my laptop or iPad. It is really hard to find a contract that will give me at for a reasonable amount of money, which to me would be about twenty quid a month. All the deals offer five thousand texts and so on. Anything with tethering seems to be over thirty quid, certainly it's always about a tender more than the same contract without, and ten months out of twelve I'd not even use it.

If you use five thousand texts a month, you're a cunt.

What ofcom should force these companies to do is to have units, and a unit is x texts or x minutes or x megs of data, and a certain monthly fee gets you however many units free, then it's a standard price for a unit over that. Then one could compare tariffs from different providers, none of this confusion people have now. Today in work some girls were going over their new iPhone 4s contracts and worrying what kind of data each thing used because different types of data cost different amounts.

My comment that all data is noughts and ones met with scant approval. The thing is, these companies have us by the balls. It's nigh on impossible to factor in all variables when shopping around. Nt to mention the contracts are now all two years for anything at a fair rice or eighteen moths for a ripoff deal. How am I supposed to know what country I'll be living in in eighteen months? Anything could happen. Most jobs I've had last less than two years, that's way too much commitment.

£25/mo to Three (off-contract) gets you unlimited data and tethering. And some large number of minutes and texts, but meh.

That actually looks pretty tasty, however I am going to assume the prices will come down a bit for a 4S when the 5 comes out...

The 4S has already come down. £449 now, it was £529 (IIRC) yesterday.

You're not reading ten posts. :(

£80 is not enough of a saving to get a model that's a year old, for me.

The 4S was £499 directly from Apple when we got ours.

Prices are up. 16GB £529, 32 £599 and 64 £699. (Previously it just said "from £529" for some reason.)

Also, by buying the phone outright, I can cancel with Vodafone and go with EE when they launch, taking advantage of LTE without having to wait two years (by which time the iPhone 7 is out).

Jesus, that's some serious extra cash just to shove in an extra lump of storage. I know, I know, all the companies do it (Google are possible even worse with them charging £40 for an extra 8GB in the Nexus 7) but it still stuns me every time I see the actual price increments laid out. Am I being too harsh and there's a good reason for the massive price jumps or is it really just the gouging it appears?

I'm the complete opposite to you. 16GB on my iPad was far, far too much, but I'm well over 32GB on my phone due to all of the music. It was fine when I synced all of my music at 160kbps or so, but iTunes Match is far too convenient. Going for the 64GB 4S was definitely a good plan for me.

I rarely listen to music on my phone, but maybe that's because I've currently got a shit phone for music. I also have iTunes Match, but I'd only have a few albums at a time on there, and would rotate regularly.

So now I'm torn between selling everything that isn't nailed down on eBay so I can get a 5, or seeing if there's any way I can pay Apple or someone a moderate fee to replace the outer shell on my 4. I really don't feel like I need a new phone, I don't tend to do a whole lot with iOS anymore, but the camera lens is scratched to fuck on my 4, to the point that everything comes out uselessly blurry. And it turns out I use the camera quite a lot on that thing.

I looked on EE's website, and there was no indication of how to buy a phone from them.

EDIT: Because I'm a belm, it seems they aren't ready to do owt yet.

I was premature in my excitement. It's unlikely I'll get one, though. I need to keep outgoings low and it probably won't fall into my £25pcm maximum that I'd be happy to pay.

This is true. Although I more than likely won't act on it. I rarely use the phone I have. it never rings (probably something to do with my keeping it in a metal filing cabinet), and I'm not sure i'll get £600's worth of use out of it over the course of two years.

At this point, your best options would be:

http://shop.orange.co.uk/register/iphon ... src=Portal
https://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/coming- ... hone5_hero

Because both of those will end up being the EE pre-order, I would suggest.

http://ee.co.uk/#section-terms-and-conditions

Quote:
4G Ready devices on Orange or T-Mobile: Subject to coverage. UK only. Pay monthly only. When 4G launches a compatible plan on EE is required. Charges may apply and you’ll have to agree to a new minimum term on EE. Other terms apply.
So you will need to "upgrade" from O/T-M over to EE. However nonsensical that is in practice.

Are you sure you're not just looking for an excuse to buy a new phone? I ask because two seconds on Google throws up stuff like this.

I can't afford a new phone and can genuinely just get by on my 4 for the time being. I just naturally assumed that fixing the lens would be a massive ballache of epic proportions. I did once take my iPhone 3G apart to try and clear dust from the screen and regretted that decision almost the second I'd opened it up.

That guide is perfect - I'd never dreamed it would be so easy to do! I guess I better just order myself up a lens then. Thanks!

Ordered a microsim from Vodafone this morning to transfer my number across to put in the iPhone 5, only to read today that they don't use it - they use a nanosim instead. Why has this not been mentioned anywhere that I've read until now? Fuck's sake.

Presumably you don't need to transfer numbers with a sim card. Can't you use some sort of internet backup thing?

I don't need to transfer any data across, just to activate the new SIM for use with my existing number (this can be done on Vodafone's website).

However, I need a SIM that fits the fucking phone in the first place.

Can you cut microSIMs down to nano size like you could with mini->micro?

I don't think so - have a look at a picture of all three together:

I'm hoping you can order a nanoSIM from your chosen provider at the same time as the device on Apple's website. I got a VF SIM at the same time as my iPad earlier this year.

Well, that's a load of bollocks then.

Do any phones other than the iPhone 4/4S use the micro-SIM?

I've done without a decent phone for the last two years. This is pretty essential for me - a turntable can wait.
