Everything you've quoted there is for the non-Fire Kindles. For the Fire range there currently isn't an opt-out option and Amazon seems to be a bit confused about whether they'll ever offer one.

They'll be displayed on the lock screen apparently so yeah, the same sort of idea.

The Fire ads are also on the home screen. Not just the lock screen. However, to my knowledge, e-ink Kindles with ads are a US-only thing. I suspect, but have not checked, that the same is true of Fires.

Yesterday I moved my phone to Cyanogenmod 9.1. It's everything I expected ICS to be and more. Stripped of the Samsung gubbins and freed from t-mobile's restrictions, my phone is once again, my phone. God bless the opening source community.

What restrictions did T-Mobile put on it? Also, for getting rid of Samsun gubbins, I just installed Apex and got me some sweet looking JellyBean type action without any further buggering around.

I like the sound of getting discounted hardware because it's got ads installed, and then removing the ads.

Tethering. They wouldn't let me tether. And that buggering around is something I always do. With everything I own. Nothing is every 'finished' when it's in my hands.

Out of interest, how do they actually block that? Just by not including the option at the OS level? Or something else? Even though I don't have tethering as part of my O2 contract I've always been able to do it because I've bought my last few phones SIM free so I've no real experience of what kind of carrier bullshit you need to suffer these days.

Not sure how it was done, but with a stock TMob SG2 Gingerbread ROM it worked and with a stock TMob SG2 ICS ROM, it didn't. So I diversified.

Yeah, the entire contacts thing is a bit poor, to put it mildly.

It's squashed all mine together okay, I think, but I very rarely use the contacts now I think about it.

I'm amazed anyone (especially you!) doesn't already have more USB cables lying around the place than they know what to do with; actually having to buy extra ones is an alien concept.

It's a device not dependent on telegraph cables to send and receive communications sent specifically to it. Imagine a walkie talkie that can be reached by only those that know the specific serial number of that handset. it's not a new technology, I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.

I'm really good at losing things, and I tend to need a lot of them (I have three devices in daily use that need those cables, and I like to be able to plug them in where I want, so there has to be three cables in the kitchen, three in the my office (at home, in my PC), three next to my bed, three in my office (my work office, in my PC), and one in the living room, because I only really take me phone in there. Oh, and one in each car).
Then I'll borrow one to plug my joypad in or something and the cleaner will put it in the special cleaner cupboard that I can't see when she tidies and it's gone forever.

Oh, and my phone is working again now. Hurrah!

New HTC to ship without charger as you've probably got shittons of the fucking things anyway if you're getting a smartphone. If you don't you can get one at cost price from the shop.

I think it's a pretty good idea really. It's obviously a cost-cutting measure but I don't think I need any more USB chargers now so I'd rather not be forced to keep buying them. Hopefully they'll stop with the shitty headphones as well.

Is there a decent Android emulator kicking around at all? There's an app I need to get from the Market and do some research on, but the only Android phone I have access to refuses to download it despite being well within the requirements.

I'm fine with it personally because I'm in the same position as you in that I'm drowning in the things. My worry though is for people who don't know that these things are standard (or who are genuinely buying their first smartphone); O2 et al will very likely wildly over-priced chargers in store and aggressive salesmen could imply that it's a necessary purchase to folks who either do need them or just don't know if they genuinely need them and don't want to take the risk of getting home and not being able to actually charge their new phone.

The official SDK comes with an emulator but I don't know how that work in terms of interfacing with Google Play.

Ooh - here's a fun one. You know phones have those override codes like ##574*#4693**396# and stuff? Apparently there's one on the Galaxy SIII that does an immediate factory reset.

Even better, there's a custom URL schema on the device that allows autodialling of a telephone number. Which means that if you stick a hidden iframe on a website with a link to té l://##574*#4693**396# or whatever (that isn't the correct code, obviously), then it autodials the number. Boom - driveby factory reset

It wasn't just the SIII, it's a flaw in the Touchwiz skin that Samsung stick on their handsets so the flaw affected older models as well apparently. Samsung did respond commendably quickly as the patch was out within days of the flaw being announced, but that doesn't detract from how horrendous a fuck-up it was to start with. Although, I wonder how that works with all the fucking testing that the telco's usually do before rolling something out to branded handsets? Is the patch still working it's way through all those companies or did Samsung somehow manage to roll it out universally?
