If you find yourself agreeing with Jonarob, try agreeing with me instead. Watch it again.

Worth it to see Brad Pitt be brutally murdered.

I like Brad Pitt! I didn't especially enjoy Burn After Reading. It's not a terrible film, but it's a bad Coen Brothers film. They'd have been better for not making it.

It's not a happy film, mind. But by crikey it's good. Heartbreaking, but bloody good.

INTERESTING FACTOIDS (none spoilerific) - I was listening to Radio 4 a couple of years ago and some film review type thing came on, after the main show they had a section about an older film, lo and behold it was Leaving Las Vegas.

They had an interview with Mike Figgis (the director) who was saying how the studio kept trying to interfere with the film and make it into something it wasn't, to the extent that they basically banned him from the doing the 'talking head/voiceover' bits with Elisabeth Shue's character.

He and Shue were so convinced that her character needed those segments (to give her character background/motivation/context) that they ended up filming them in a clandestine fashion in the production's trailers, hence no real proper lighting or anything like that, just a rush to get them on film at all.

He also said that Cage wondered if he could play a drunk without being drunk, but Figgis convinced him there was no need (although Cage did do an awful lot of binge drinking pre-production), the only bit of the film where Cage is genuinely drunk is where he loses the plot at the casino. They didn't tell the casino what was going to happen in advance (it was filmed at a real casino) because they knew full well that they wouldn't be allowed to.

They also ended up dodging the police quite regularly too, because as a low-budget film they weren't in a position to shut down entire streets and that sort of thing.

There was loads of other stuff in there too, straight from director's mouth.

It was a great interview, just a dude talking about a film he'd made some fifteen years earlier, but absolutely fascinating. (To me at least!)

It's almost as if the last convention the Coen Brothers hadn't subverted was the one that they couldn't make bad films.

The Man Who Wasn't There is excellent. You have to understand the Coens to realise it's a comedy, though. I really enjoyed The Ladykillers too.

OK, yes, Seed is a bit much in places.

It really does sag somewhat in the middle but the set up and finale are both.... fucking horrible.

Despite the cheap CGI the:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
hammer killing is just fucking awful

and the final scene:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
where the good guy's wife is nail gunned in the head, he kills himself to spare his daughter, and then his daughter is locked into the same dungeon where we saw the animals/baby/woman die at the start of thirst/starvation and get eaten to a skeleton by maggots, knowing that the child is then going to go through the same thing but with the addition of her father's rotting corpse beside her

is pretty grim.

The PETA footage of real animal killing/barbarism for the intro set the tone and it pretty much maintained it from there on in.

Yeah, a bit beyond the usual.

Gah, yet another film that kept me awake after bedtime, more so than The Hills Have Eyes.

The real animal cruelty/killing was certainly part of it, but also the raw unremitting evil of the bad guy, and that final horrible grim tableau.

The hammer death lingers a bit too, the naffness of the CGI doesn't much lessen the brutality of it. I don't think I've ever seen such a vicious and sustained torture/death sequence before.

As a film it's a bit shit, far too much of it is in near total darkness, it's lumbered with a poor script and clichéd characters in trite situations, and even at 90 minutes it feels overly long with a meandering sag in the mid-section, could easily fit the whole thing into an hour.

Yet still quite a powerful film, and the final 20 minutes or so are somewhat intense.

Tonight's film was 'THE LAST BOY SCOUT' - my continuing quest to watch the sadly deceased Tony Scott's filmography.

This one has aged a bit, (alpha white male, simpering women, slightly confused black man), but it still works as a solid action/comedy film in the main. And Tony Scott really does BIG POUNDING EMOTION quite well. Plus Bruce Wills does a good turn, and it's got Halle Berry's bum in it.

You can definitely see Scott getting prepared for TRUE ROMANCE which was his next directorial effort after this film.

(True Romance is, of course, an absolute fucking masterpiece.)

Toxic Avenger! Tromeo & Juliet is also fun.

Edit: What the hell... White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi is a Troma movie? I had no idea.

Ahh, 'they only distributed it, but still. I've been wanting to see it for years. Rob Zombie is a massive fan of it, so much so, that's where he got the name of his (former) band.

Rewatched Margin Call last night even though I've got lots of other films on my 'to watch' list.

Margin Call is mesmerizingly good, no car chases, no explosions, no one gets punched or shot, there are no 'boo' moments or anything - it's just a compelling tale, brilliantly told through some superbly good actors.

Anyone who hasn't seen Margin Call yet - WATCH IT.

I thought it was tedious and frustrating and the main guy just seemed like a total wanker. The story was nonsensical and not nearly sufficiently inspiring to overcome the obviously low budget. Waste of time.

Most recent watches:

SAFE HOUSE - Fairly generic thriller fare, lifted a bit by Denzel's presence and some other dude who was quite good but I didn't recognise his face, couple of good supporting actors too. Engaged me for most of the way through its running time, although it wasn't helped by the fact that the two main protagonists pretty much wanted to kill each other for most of the film, so hard to really settle down and get on the 'right side' as it were.

SAFE - No not just the same film again but with all house related content removed. This is the latest Statham vehicle and it was..... OK. Very swift moving and violent and did manage to create some emotional investment in the characters, but I wasn't massively impressed overall. Didn't overstay its welcome at 90 minutes, I'd about seen enough by then, but had been entertained.

I saw this tonight for the first time. It was a bit too much visually for me, though the concept was good.

Also, the lead character seemed to be taught to swear by Liam Gallagher, which was odd against his South African accent. Every time he swore it really stood out as sounding weird.
