Related to the OnLive thread, I'm interested in what people's broadband speed is. I'm after actual not max, and your home broadband not some funky office connection - because the assumption is that your home broadband is what you'd be using a streaming gaming service over.

About 6 Mb, IIRC. I'll check later at home.

About 6mb and the connection is frequently shared, or at least shared often enough for it to make trying to use such a service an unworkable pain in the tit if it required exclusive use of the connection.

6.5Mb or so. Which is shit, considering I can get nearly 10Mb over Three’s 3G connection.

Hovering around the 11Mbps mark when doing a speed test.

It's worth noting though that this is only half the picture. My net connection's max speed as above is plenty fast enough for pretty much all streaming services, however we get enough drop-outs on things like iPlayer to be annoying and OnLive/Gaikia have never been 100% smooth so I wouldn't consider paying for any of this stuff or using it as my main resource for accessing that medium.

The internet comes from my local exchange, which is outside.

Doesn't it get rained on? Most exchanges are put inside buildings.

I was interested to see where has the fastest speeds, from city to suburbs. And so on.

Outside my house, I should clarify. There my interest in its location ends.

I get a much more stable connection and faster speed living in a tiny village surrounded by countryside, than I did living in a town of 80,000 people. But I was two miles from the exchange then, for some reason, which is dreadful.

Before I got cable, I was linked to the Hale exchange, offering (at the time) a maximum of 2Mb. The other local exchange, Hunts Cross is fully fibred. Bloody BT.

I'm confused, doesn't the fibre actually need to get to your house to get fast broadband? I thought basically all the exchanges had fibre going to them.

FTTC - Fibre to the cabinet. Very good internet
FTTP - Fibre to the premises. Superb internet.

Fibre just to the Exchange doesn't really help you at all because it's the last mile or so of copper that fucks everything up - but it's a prerequisite for the two options above.

Oh yes, sorry. I was thinking cabinet and exchange were the same for some reason.

100Mb. According to my SAM report, there was only one day last month when it didn't exceed my contract max.

Actually, thats bollocks as I haven't been speedbumped yet. And also, my July speed was good, but August downstream is shocking, hit 39Mb/s one day this month.

I get about 16Mb (Sky's up to 20Mb thingy) easily enough to stream HD video (sky, iplayer netflix etc), and to download stuff much faster than I could watch them.
