Yes, the caption during the Olympics said Henry. Cue loads of people on Twitter saying :belm:

Deluded lady on Radio 4 was proclaiming the pictures haven't been reproduced in the press because 'the british public doesn't want to see them' as they're sympathetic to the royals plight and overal lack of privacy.

I think she'll find that we just don't give a shit. I imagine if they were printed the only people arguing about them would be the press and whatever "experts" they could muster to come onto their programme.

They were mock ups, and they deliberately chose someone who didn't look like Harry, then blamed Leveson for stifling their freedoms.

harry is short for henry. In the same way that Jack is short for John. And so on.

EDIT: And ET is short for his little legs.

That's fucking stupid, it's not even shorter. I thought it was either just a name on its own or short for Harold.

It's not a contraction so much as a familiar form - much like the familar form of Sarah is Sally. Odd shit, names.

I've decided I really don't care. He's a young man, and people do that kind of stuff on holidays (well, people other than me of course). Especially wealthy ones.

I was annoyed about the papers making him leave Iraq thing - leave him alone and let him have his career.

That's another one I didn't know.

The main one is Bill being short for William.

No it isn't. It's just another name for John.

Source: My name is Jonathan.

(Thanks for spelling it properly though.)

Also, my brother is called Jack. Much to the amusement of a former colleague, who insisted my brother and I had the same name. However! He made the same assumption as Grim...

Jonathan is a Hebrew name. Jack is French. Jack is short for John because the name John was "Jacques" in French (apparently...), pronounced "Jock", which in England became "Jack" as a replacement for John. Some convoluted shit like that anyway. Don't quote me on it! It's disputed by historians anyway.

The main bullet point of this presentation is that Jack is definitely "short" for John and not Jonathan. Although it may be short for Jonathan as well if you shorten Jonathan to John and then take the next step to Jack, but you know what I mean.

It's the same thing for Harry/Henry, from what I remember. I don't think his name is exactly 'Henry', it's Hon-reeh or whatever, like Thierry Henry. Lots of Monarchs and Royals since 1066 have been called Honree. Sounds like Harry to an English person?

The OED disagrees.

Quote:
Jack, the most common pet form of John in medieval England, was a borrowing of a Flemish shortening of Jankin.

When we went to Belgium for Bobby's Stag Do, Curio kept trying to talk French to all the Flemish people that inhabit that part of Belgium. The looks of disgust would suggest that they rather are worlds apart.

They are in Belgium, my companies head office is there. It can become quite moody in some areas where there is some segregation and refusal to speak or tolerate each others language. Each time there is an election they can’t agree and make a government for months.

Even Policing is different, I work with a Flemish guy and he says at Christmas the Dutch areas have road blocks and are really hard on drink drivers, but in the French areas there is nothing.

I find that the French Belgium’s are on the whole lazier, they love their 2-3 lunches once or twice a week and one of them can’t walk into a room without shaking everyone’s hand or even kissing (men included) people if they know them well enough. The Flemish guy I work with is the boss of a load of French guys and they don’t like him as he doesn’t do the hand shaking\kissing crap every morning.

I've found different areas of France to be world's apart from each other. In some (the north), it's great being me, there. people are happy to chit chat in bars and restaurants, and speak French to me, rather than English. I as hanging about in a bar in a small town somewhere a few years back and ended up drinking sambuca with a striking fireman and some girls until very late with no problems (I get better at languages the more I drink).

In the South, they can be really quite stand offish and speak english to me, whilst I speak French to them. Bizareely, in some areas, it's better to make it clear you aren't dutch but english, and in others, it is the other way around.

Funny coves, the French.

NOTE: It helps that I'm really good looking, too. I'd hate to look like Curio in a foreign country.

He has that wherever he goes. The problem with cripping ugliness is that its language is universal.
