But... this is like that TV thread, where someone says something is crap, and someone else says no, it's great.

I've been with Virgin for well over a decade - never had the slightest problem. If I've ever had to call them, the problem has been sorted over the phone, the engineers have always arrived on time, etc.

Yeah, the engineers arrived on time. 'On time' being the arse end of 5 hour time frame.

Again, I've never had a problem when dealing with Virgin (or at least I cannot recall any)...and all the guys that have had to come round have been splendid and punctual fellows, whether it was an installation or dealing with a fault.

Longest I've been without access has been 48 hours and even that didn't involve total none access, just intermittant.

I'm not really worried about how long you've been with them, but how smooth the installation was. It's the rigmarole of upheaval I fear, not the service I'll get for the next decade.

I should note that despite my installation issues (3 months from order to completion, but in practice, 5 days downtime for the services I wanted) and a fuck up 2 years ago at their end, I wouldn't actually be without it for as long as I live in a cabled area.

Fair enough, but then surely I covered that too when I said they have sorted problems straight away over the phone (I had a few broadband issues once and they needed to come out for that), and they were on time and excellent and efficient when I had my Tivo installed earlier this year.

Anyway, this is completely moot. I've just done the check on their website and I'm not in a cable area, anyway.

In some ways, that's a relief. In other ways, boo.

My only truly bad experience was during the recent speed bump when they action the bump before they delivered the new modem, resulting in no internet for the Paz household for a week. The sales call centre is overseas, but the customer service seems to be based in Scotland.

The painful bits are:

1) Arranging Virgin Engineer appointment
2) Phoning to ask where Virgin engineer is
3) Virgin Engineer leaving telling you that he's logged the installation as complete, and it will 'activate in 15 minutes'
4) Calling Virgin and spending 30 minutes going through tests that you know won't make any difference
5) Logging an issue
6) Arranging Virgin engineer appointment
7) Phoning to ask where Virgin Engineer is
8) Asking why Virgin man has now correctly activated your broadband and TV, but not installed phone line still
9) Calling Virgin and telling you can't test the phone line, as IT ISN'T PHYSICALLY FUCKING INSTALLED
10) Calling Virgin and apologising to supervisor for swearing at nice Indian Call centre man
11) Arranging Virgin Engineer Appointment for some time 3 weeks hence
12) Phoning to ask where Virgin Engineer is
13) Realising that now the phone is installed you never use it, but you have to pay for it anyway.

Or ring Virgin ask for a upgrade

1) The arrange a time
2) They phone and text to confirm time
3) Day of install ring to give a more accurate time
4) Engineer turns up.
5) Job done.

With Cable and FTTC it's long past time we could get broadband without needing a phone line.

I would have thought most of Nottingham was cabled up? Unless you live in the 'outskirts'.

Money's too tight to mention.

Still could be worse I have a mate in Ledbury who is condemned to crappy DSL speeds as when BT laid the original cable they didn't even use copper but some crappy copper alloy that generates a load of noise that I'm not sure when they are planning to replace.

I have some friends that live in Beeston. Beeston's quite nice. I assume the rest of Nottingham is like that, too.

Beeston is a bit rank, to be honest. Full of students and chavs.

Put it this way: it's slightly better than where I live.

The arsebanditry was only further enhanced by the fact that you had got into a fight with Ange, and you two weren't talking, and she was in another cab, and not answering her phone because she was upset.

I once drew an 'X' on a crappy tourist map when I was so merry I couldn't remember where I was staying. Checking the map the next morning, the 'X' was completely in the wrong place.

Oh, if it was that night I totally remember why I was in trouble as well.

I have some friends that live in Beeston. Beeston's quite nice. I assume the rest of Nottingham is like that, too.

Beeston is a bit rank, to be honest. Full of students and chavs.

Put it this way: it's slightly better than where I live.

When we're down there we don't go out late at all. About 7pm or so. This is due to friend's wife struggling to manage sugar levels so she's pretty much asleep after a couple of glasses of wine, and now she's up the duff, so we don't go out at all. Which is a shame, as we went to a superb pub (might have been the Victoria).

Oh, that's quite a way away from the main town centre. I expect that's ok, but I've not been there myself. :)

I worked just off the high street in Beeston for three years. I saw many a sight I wish I hadn't.

But if you were there, I think it was the night of the Weetabix dictionary and Billie Pipers spaniel eared tits.

Until you wrote this, I was thinking "I was there! I remember the night they had a fight and went home separately!"

But I don't remember this. So it must have been a different time that happened then :)

It might not have been the Victoria. It was near a church, and sort of L shaped. Lots of real ale and small decked beer garden facing a car park.

I believe it has happened to me 3 times. I've been to Nottingham 4 times.

The first time may have been before we were together. :DD
