Mine doesn't take up any extra room than if it wasn't there at all. I've got more usable space now, because my old 32" CRT filled up a whole corner of the room.

A colleague of mine use to have an absolutely fucking massive rear projection telly in his tiny front room, it looked hilarious. But he was single and just into games so fair play to him really.

Pisht. I've got a 38" TV, and it takes up distinctly less room than the two fish tanks, which are 4' and 3.5' long.

There's only one chair in the living room that faces the television. The sofas are opposite each other at 90 degrees to the TV, sperated by a table that is jsut big enough for Ticket to Ride. We do have a 32 inch TV in the bedroom, though. This is becuase there isn't anywhere else to put it, and it was given to us due the previous owner dying. I really dislike having a TV in the bedroom, it's all kinds of wrong.

It depends on the shape and layout of the room including doors and windows. The guy I bought my 60 inch from had a living room that was the same shape and size as mine (rectangular)
He had the TV on the short wall at the front of his house, in front of a bay window. The TV dominated the room and that’s why he was selling it (his wife was making him)
In my living room it’s on the long wall and we don’t have a bay window so the TV doesn’t dominate at all.

My wife read in a magazine (years ago) that this was not good for relationships, so its never been allowed in our house.

I've had 2 samsungs die one, one after 2.5 years, one was never right and they sent it back twice unrepaired, with a high pitched whine on analogue inputs. They insisted on a third repair attempt before replacing, so I just use it for dvi and hdmi as a monitor now, and shan't buy Samsng again.

My main TV is an LG with everything on it. Richer Sounds, 5 year guarantee, works like a dream. Samsung may have made the screen but they didn't make the rest of it and it's much better. Was for the price the most full featured set I could get, by some margin.

Also, if you think 42 is a minimum, then either your eyes are broken, or your house is too big.

I just don't see the point on spending hundreds of pounds on a TV only to squint at it in the corner of a room. Also, HD content is barely discernable on 32" or lower, I find.

I struggle a bit gaming on mine with the PS3, it's too large for that I reckon. TV and films it's perfect for, and you can really tell the difference between DVD and Blu-ray.

There's a flipside to that though, I think. As you said, at some sizes HD content is barely discernible from SD, but really stands out on massive TVs. Great if you only watch HD/Blu-ray, but I've been to some places that have massive TVs and on standard satellite/terrestrial channels it looks awful, just a big blurry jagged mess.

I'm not sure how big our TV is (40 or 42", maybe), but it's a lot bigger than the little 17/19" sets we moved in with and were mocked for. It's whatever you're happy with, and I think there are upsides to the larger sets, but downsides too, such as the TV dominating a room, being too big to comfortably watch if you have a small space and being horribly ugly at anything other than HD. I wouldn't want anything bigger than our current set, anyway.

My algorithm for picking a product from a confusing morass like TVs:

1) pick one at random, perhaps the mid-range model by a manufacturer you trust
2) Google for reviews of it. Favour professional reviews from Which?, magazines, and/or very high profile websites like AVForums. Be skeptical abound random blogs. Don't pay much attention to Amazon reviews.
3) Sooner or later, some of these reviews are going to say things like "also consider model X" or "not as good as model Y". If enough of them add up, replace your initial pick in 1) with X or Y.
4) repeat from 2) until you get bored. Buy whatever you settled on.

During this little soujourn into the world of motion artifacts, edge-lighting, black level response and other such nonsensical terms, I discovered that Which? make you fucking pay to look at their reviews. Cunts!

6. It's shit. Take it back
7. Buy the one BeeX told you to buy.

This thread is pointless anyway. I have longstanding experience of giving kissyfur purchasing advice. He'll listen patiently, then go out and buy some cheap arse piece of crap CRT that's smaller than the one he started with.

That only applies to Pc upgrades.

As it happens, I'm going with myp's reco.

If I can get it past the committee, who seems to think that as she hasn't heard of LG they must be shit.

ok, probably not quite relevant, but I had a 14" Goldstar TV for about 10 years when I was still living at home. Never had a problem with it once. I believe Goldstar are now called LG.

Our Sony TV (40w2000 or something from memory) which I bought maybe 5 years ago has also been brilliant and has never had any problems.

So in conclusion, regardless of manufacture, it is clear that if you want to buy a tv which will give you years of trouble free viewing, just send your money to my offshore bank account and I will get it for you*.

*Or if its a nice one, potentially keep it for myself.

Oh, I'll add the usual disclaimer - whatever you buy, get it from John Lewis. They'll price match and give you a 5 year guarantee.
