Quote:
The Neo Geo X Gold portable console, first reported on back in January, is set for release on December 6th for $199.99. The console, manufactured by Blaze under license from SNK, will arrive with 20 games preloaded and an "expandable game card slot" (previously reported as taking standard SD cards) for additional titles. With four face buttons, an analog stick, and a 4.3-inch display of unknown resolution, the Neo Geo X should be able to handle native Neo Geo games, unlike the original Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, which were stuck with only two face buttons.

The underpinning hardware has yet to be documented, but its peripherals have: you'll be able to purchase both a joystick attachment and a dock to connect the console to a TV through HDMI. It's not clear if there will be any multiplayer capabilities, but the lack of any mention in the official press release is worrying. We originally expected the Neo Geo X to be released back in the second quarter, but the new release schedule will help Blaze and SNK capitalize on the potentially-lucrative holiday period. You can register your interest for the handheld over at the official Neo Geo X website.

Hmm. Seems like almost anyone who cares would already have a PSP or similar, although I guess the HDMI dock could be neat. There's a pic of the hardware on the source link.

$200? I might have been interested at $20 as a curiosity.

I would be super interested but not for £200.. I only paid about £70 for my GP2X Wiz and that handles pretty much all the games mentioned.

It does look nice though... 8)

Still expensive after all these years! How much was the console again? £600? I remember drooling over one in Chips.

Then I went home and wept onto my brother's Amiga 500. If he wasn't home.

You will buy one.

You will play if for a day.

You will add it to your spreadsheet.

Is there a list of the games anywhere? Am I just unable to spot it due to exhaustion?

That thing is very nice...

No Aerofighters? Oh well, still a decent selection, and I guess you're meant to add more later with the SD card slot.

I've registered my interest.

It's your fault. You owe me $200!

I hope it's got a better screen than the Blaze AtGames portable SEGA consoles. I've got a Mega Drive one and a Master System one (which I haven't even opened yet). Those things have a bizarre screen which scales things to fit in its smaller resolution and displays what's left in a dotty pattern.

Image

If you plug 'em into the TV, they do look good (like a real MD), but the cable is hard to find and its prone to falling out. The tiny D-pad is prone to thinking you're pressing Up when you're not, which makes playing Jewel Master even more difficult.

Still easier to play on than a Nomad though.

Has Blaze made any really good licensed consoles?

I always wanted a Nomad. You'd think I'd have learned from the sheer bulk and battery consumption of the Game Gear and Lynx.

The Nomad is probably the most battery hungry handheld ever.

I might pick one up six months after release, when it's inevitably going to be in bargain bins for $50.

I've changed it to the link now. I've never been able to embed YouTube videos on this forum. See if that's any better?

**Edit** Ah, the video is unlisted so maybe my quote was right and it was the video? Either way... It's there now.

Embedded link seems to be okay for me and given NeoGeo emulation is pretty good on most of these small handhelds (Dingoo / GPWiz / etc) it doesnt look anything special to me

It's difficult to judge properly from the video, but the controls look pretty good (and nice and clicky). Looks like a nice enough little handheld, but if the price is still going to be $200 they're living in Lalaland.
Definitely a nice bargain bin purchase, though.

Thats the thing - if you look at something dirt cheep like the Dingoo

Which also has a good MAME emulator and a reasonable emu for plenty of other classic systems its only about £50 or £60 - if they could even get this down close to that number they would be doing better.

(random links from a google search no idea how reputable these places are)

£50.47 http://www.ankaka.com/dingoo-a320-multi ... _p253.html
£62.99 http://www.highlandgadgets.co.uk/dingoo ... d-49-p.asp
