There's no way I'd put anything I cared about in the hold.

Recently I had the misfortune to fly Brussels Airlines (EasyJet type airline)

My laptop had a cracked screen when I took it out of the bag, they tried to give me some bullshit about it not been covered in the hold, so I countered by saying that on almost every flight I see them move cabin bags into the hold due to overcrowding.

In the end I got the repair money from our company travel agent.

Aside from this I’ve not had an issue in 5 years of mostly short haul flying. My cases are also the "hard type" and can be locked

Whilst we are on the topic of luggage, can you put knifes in “hold baggage”?
We are staying in a place with a kitchen this year and want to do some cooking with local produce. Every time we do this the cutting knifes are blunt and crap, so I was thinking of taking a couple of global knifes and the sharpener with me so that I have something decent to use when we are there.

Is this allowed? Last thing I want is expensive knifes getting confiscated and a 6 hour interview and cavity search to boot

Aye, carrying a knife for work was the main reason I checked baggage. It's never an issue.This IMHO is doing airports right. Minimise the amount of time you have to waste in the god forsaken hellholes.

Knives are allowed in the hold, not in the cabin mind!

Somehow I'd never flown with Easyjet before a couple of weeks ago. I checked my baggage and paid for that upfront, however, I noted that at the gate they were being utter cunts about their cabin luggage policy - only one bag per person, so this meant that if you had a cabin bag and a duty free bag, and the duty free wouldn't fit in the cabin bag, you had to check that in at a cost of £30.

Given that they claim the checked bags policy is to increase efficiency for passengers, that doesn't really dovetail with a gate queue of people unpacking and restuffing bags (in one case, said restuffing meant that the dimensions were now exceeded and it had to be checked) while others get into the gate around/over them.

You must be made of sterner stuff than me. I will always favour a strategy that minimises the amount of life-draining haggling I have to go through with insurance companies about the value or existence of lost/broken kit. And the odds of delicate kit in the hold being lost or broken are unarguably far higher than in a carry-on.

You want me to tell the tale of the baggage train driving over someone's bag and completely crushing it? Oh, I sort of just did.

You are asking for trouble, asfish. Your hold luggage goes thumping down long conveyor belts, is thrown onto the back of a baggage train with any number of other, heavier bags on top of it, is then thrown into a container (for larger aircraft) or straight into the hold (for smaller ones). The same thing then happens in reverse at the other end. Even with a hard suitcase to protect against being crushed, it's sustaining a LOT of shocks which hard drives don't like.

Do they have to be so rough with the bags though? When I flew back to the Uk they were litereally throwing the bags onto the belt. Does this make their job easier or something? Or are they trying to break stuff?

The retort is why are you carrying something valuable and/or fragile in your hold luggage? If it's that important to you, bring it on the plane with you.

I'd go as far to say if you always stow your expensive equipment in the hold, you've been incredibly lucky for something to break just the once.

When I travel I'd take computer in the hold, I would if I could take my knives in the hold as they are rather valuable, but I'll just make sure I pack them extra safe in the bag then!

I think you're confusing hold and cabin there. Your case goes in the hold, your hand luggage goes in the cabin.

If your valuable knives are going to break from the treatment of being put into the hold of an airplane, they probably won't survive well as knives in most other situations.

You absolutely will not be able to take them into the cabin with you. When I was working, people couldn't bring nail clippers and, for a period, anything with an electrical cord.

No way knifes will be allowed in the cabin. You are not allowed anything sharper than a plastic fork!

Forgive me if I'm being incredibly slow, but how often do you need to transport knives using air travel? Further, why do you own a set, aren't they provided where you work?

The ones are work are shit. I like using my own knives when cooking. I like cooking. Im intending to travel by air soon.
