Spoiled brats can work social media too. We don't have their money or their sense of entitlement to more money. All we can do is point and laugh and hope their trust funds runs out when Daddy's investments in Irish real estate goes sour.

We all know that the only good tumblr is Bad Ads. People should read that after they've looked at the rich kids.

But anyway, I think it's interesting to drool over the cars and houses of rich folk. The blingin' watches and overpriced alcohol they seem to be obsessed with, not so much.

Even if I was mega rich I still wouldn't spend stupid amounts of money on things like that. There's a reason that they're taking pictures of these things, they're clearly just showing off.

It's totally on the parents. There are sensible ways of bringing up kids with money. Isn't Jackie Chan donating all of this wealth and forcing his kids to start more or less from scratch or something? That's a decent idea. Although a tad drastic perhaps.

Also, I didn't realise there were so many rich people.

That qualifies as "not growing up around that sort of money" to my mind. I imagine his kids don't drive Ferraris, cruise the Hamptons in 120ft yachts, or drop $42k on a bar tab.

And over 4 grand for a bottle of Patron XO (that's the coffee stuff I went round and gave people at the BeexBQ).

Just realised those prices are ex sales tax, too, at another 17.5%.

Coincidentally, this quote just passed my Tumblr dashboard: http://www.yesmagazine.org/blogs/david- ... n-disorder

Quote:
In highly unequal societies, the very rich are prone to seek affirmation of their personal worth through extravagant displays of excess. They easily lose sight of the true sources of human happiness, sacrifice authentic relationships, and deny their responsibility to the larger society—at the expense of their essential humanity. At the other extreme, the desperate are prone to manipulation by political demagogues who offer simplistic analyses and self-serving solutions that in the end further deepen their misery. Governing institutions lose legitimacy. Democracy becomes a charade. Moral standards decline. Civic responsibility gives way to extreme individualism and disregard for the rights and well-being of others.

That is about $40 a shot, which is madness, but not out of the realms of possibility for a swanky club.

I would like to think that the owners of the shop that sold them a bottle of bailey's for $1700 had some sort of alert system for when these silly people came in the shop, and the prices jumped up accordingly.

I don't think it's the money that's doing it particularly. If these kids are tossers then I'll bet that their parents are tossers too. Same as most kids everywhere.

I also wonder how much of it is growing up around it, and how much is just 'having the money'. I think a fair few lottery winners have thrown themselves into unremitting excess. It'd be interesting to see how quickly your impression of the value of money would change.

Very indeed much. There was a greenhorn on one of the boats in Deadliest Catch who's Father was an owner of a fleet of crab boats. He'd sent his son to work from the bottom up to appreciate the hard work the people working for him put in. I'd like to think he'll be a better person for that sense of perspective.

Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse did a sketch which follows this premise exactly. Very amusing.

Like James Bond's number plates, the price bars on the supermarket shelves flip round.

Marie had a small café
The meals she served were nice
And everyone who came agreed
She charged a modest price.

But now Marie's prices are high!
How come? Ah, here's the reason:
Today makes the beginning
of a brand new tourist season!

Incoming :boots:

The receipt is for Jamaica, where the rate of GCT is 17.5%. There are 140 Jamaican dollars to the pound.

Accordingly, the bottle of Baileys cost £12.28 + 17.5% = £14.43.

It could be argued that spending 2 years at college, 3 at uni and then another 4 doing a DPhil (all in arts subjects) is a bit of an ostentious display of wealth.

Good catch!

If you hadn't pointed out the sales tax (which rang as untrue for a US receipt at that rate), I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Plus, it was easier than trying to point out the holes in the last paragraph of the Meacher article, largely because I agreed with the generality of the rest of it.
