Watched the gold medal in the rowing on the BA park screen at which point it cunted down like a ranting fuckwit. On way back home to change and hit the Heath for the rest of the day. Curio, take note.

The Guardian blog today had a good description of it. Essentially, it may be that he thought there was a mech fault, so fell off. This is apparently acceptable in cycling, and considered normal.

As he was brought up in Germany, his English is going to be better than to claim something was lost in translation.

He also said (my bolding): "We were saying if we have a bad start we need to crash to get a restart. I just crashed, I did it on purpose to get a restart, just to have the fastest ride. I did it. So it was all planned, really."

That statment vexes me, as does the 'clarification' afterwards. it smacks of being a cocky little kid. And isn't terribly gentelmanly.

Sort of. The only numbers I've found is something between £6.5-10m a year for the entire team.

For perspective, the Germans paid £8m for a single horse in the equestrian. The wages for a top player in the Premiership.

Lots of cash to pay people to look at the riders and make them do everything perfectly.

Man, did you see that tournament? Gemma Gibbons was the underdog for every one of her matches. She played a slightly underdog role in one or two of them - getting a slight lead and getting super conservative, but oh how it worked. A couple of nice ippons too (the one in the... quarters?... was an amazing bit of drama). The final was a taste of her own medicine. Kayla Harrison got the lead, and was just too smart and strong for Gemma to take it. The fact she got a silver was fantastic, and the Americans never usually win judo gold, so fair play.

An impressive pasting by the women's lightweight double sculls there.

A sentence I never thought I'd see from you. Not bad, this Olympic lark now, is it?

I know it seems a bit obvious, but it is good to see that the sports which invested in, are the sports which we are good in. I guess also though, that some sports have an inherent cost which is much greater than others, judo must cost less than cycling as those bikes are more expensive than a mat.

Hockey stands out as being the leading contender for a funding cut next time around.

Meh. If the wife wasn't obsessed I don't imagine I'd be paying much attention.
