So Hotmail is being turned off and Outlook.com is the new hotmail.
Head to outlook.com and grab your usernames first people Or at least grab the usernames and names of other people on beex to piss them off...

Be careful.. Don't change your Hotmail name to an Outlook one. It'll stuff up all the settings/downloads on your phone.

My live account isn't a hotmail account, so shouldn't be an issue for me.

Not sure why I'd want an @outlook.com address, mind.

I've registered accounts for governmentyard and firstlastname and both take me to a hotmail page. Hotmail's a mess, isn't it? It's not even fucking hot.

I set one up for the wife as Hotmail or Outlook.com is ok when linked with SkyDrive

Once I had set up the account for my wife I sent myself an email from it and was immediately asked to enter one of those annoying codes that show you are human, at least MS have phrases you can read unlike many sites.

Another option was to verify the account so that you are seen as human and don’t have to do phrases anymore. This involves entering your mobile number then receiving a text with a number which you then enter into the site. Nice and Easy? Not so much.

I entered my mobile and the site then removes the 0 from the front of my number, tried 3 goes with the text and nothing happens. So I think maybe I missed the 0 off and I can edit the number, can you fuck despite links that give you this impression you need to stop SMS services which gets rid of the phone number and lets you enter a new one. 2 more attempts with 0 and +44 and still no text. Now its saying it can’t send the text and I need to try again later.

I have had Hotmail for years, so I just have an Outlook.com interface to my old account, found that this is a bit like the Windows 8 tablet interface, clumsy and hard to navigate. There is a front page is Windows 8 style and then the rest of it is just the same Hotmail format

It says that all e-mails will be forwarded, so the address clearly still works.

You could just... not change the email address.

Any existing Hotmail address will continue to work fine, indeed you can just log straight into Outlook.com right now with an existing Hotmail address and you'll get the whole experience without having to change anything. Presumably at some point they'll shut the actual Hotmail.com site down but users can then just move straight to Outlook.com and carry on.
