Is it just me, or have YouTube ramped up the number of adverts during the past few weeks? I used to rarely see an ad before watching a video, but it seems to be occurring far more often of late.

So how do you block the bastards? I have Adblock Plus installed (in Firefox) but that doesn't help block the pre-video ads.

I think Google are clever enough to have made them unblockable, at least without blocking the video you want to watch as well.

If it's a short non-annoying ad, I might watch. If I can skip it, I will.

If it's a FUCKING CUNT of an ad (like the one a few months ago for lowcostholidays where the smug red smiley face whistled obnoxiously before saying 'aha, where are we going today?') then both it and the video I wanted to watch can fuck off, it's just not worth it.

For the unskippable ones I just stick it on mute and open up another tab to look at something else for a bit. I can't get too wound up about it for all the free entertainment I've had out of YouTube.

I've literally never seen an advert on a YouTube video in my life, how have I managed to avoid them all this time? Anyway, can someone link me to a video that's got an advert out of curiosity?

:this:

Besides, it's usually up to the channel owner whether or not ads appear, and they get the lion's share of the revenue. I really don't think it's fair to block them. People make their living producing quality videos - support them!

This one usually has one. Often if it uses licensed music, an ad gets put at the beginning.

I didn't get one?

Aha, I do if I sign out of my apps account, so there's the answer, 4C - get a Google Apps account: https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/standard/new3

I suspect you may have to pay them if you want rid of the ads, though.

I didn't get an advert on that one either, and I don't have an apps account (whatever that it is). Indeed I signed out of my Google account entirely and still didn't get an advert.

The version of AdBlock I used on Firefox stripped out Youtube ads. I suspect this Chrome one does too.

Solution found to those annoying in-video adverts:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/13333

Works with Firefox, Chrome and Opera.

I'm still testing it but it seems to work just fine. It also (of course) blocks adverts on 4OD's YouTube vids :D

Note: as it's a script there's a slight risk involved in using it - however, the site appears to be well vetted and reliable, and given the number of devs that look at these scripts I would hope that anything malicious wouldn't be made available for download.

You say that, but I checkedvthe script and look what I found...

if (ubisoft.uplay.isInstalled()) rootkit.InstallAndEnable()

looks dodgy and rootkitish to me.l

I don't see that in the script - where did you look?

Here's the script:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/review/13333

A Google search doesn't reveal any notification of what you mentioned either, and there's also no mention of it on the Userscripts forum.

I fear you may have missed the daft rootkit/browser security thread, on which tlmy comment was based.

Okay, a quick browse doesn't show any connection between that and Greasemonkey or the YousableTubefix script - so what's the connection?

So where did you get this from:

if (ubisoft.uplay.isInstalled()) rootkit.InstallAndEnable()

I'm still struggling to find that anywhere and what it has to do with Greasemonkey or the YousableTubeFix script.

Please enlighten me.

It was a "joke", but you wouldn't have got it if you'd not read the other thread. I went hunting through the code as well.
