Can you just not retweet private tweets, because I think they disabled that (for obvious reasons).

I can't see that you've retweeted anything recently.

I am a big spaz that doesn't understand twitter

Your retweets appear to be coming through fine.

Not if it's someone you follow, no.

I can see a number of RTs by you: https://twitter.com/#!/mdhalstead

Think about it. Suppose you RT something Grim... says. The whole point of the native retweet is that if I follow both Grim... and you, then I don't see the RT -- I only see Grim...'s original.

So if you follow Grim..., and you RT Grim..., then the RT is itself (often) hidden from your view because you saw the original. Some clients will show it, but many won't. Tweetbot on the iPhone, for example, doesn't show me a new entry in my timeline when I retweet someone I follow, but the tweet itself is marked by a little enclosed-arrow icon to remind me what I did.

Update on the @beexgames account -- it now works again. The instructions for how to use it are below. I would encourage you to put @beexgames on SMS updates by going here and clicking the little mobile phone round button. This means you'll get an SMS whenever anyone posts things to it -- that way we can be more proactive about arranging games.

Doctor Glyndwr wrote:
The @BeexGames Twitter account
We are experimenting with using this account to announce and arrange online gaming. Here's how it works:

  • @BeexGames follows your Twitter account (otherwise step 4 won't work, you can only send Twitter direct messages to people who follow you). If it isn't following you, let me know.
  • If you want to game with us, you follow the BeexGames account.
  • When you want to play games, use your Twitter client to send a Direct Message to BeexGames. You can do this on the Twitter website here. For example, "I want to play Gears 2 tonight, between 9pm and 11pm. Anyone up for it?" Keep it short, because it's going to put "via @yourusername" in front of it.
  • After a short delay (maybe 5 min), your direct message will be reposted from the BeexGames account, like this one. Hence, you have broadcasted that you want to play a game, but all the notifications come from the same Twitter account for neatness. This means we don't all need to follow each other to get new game notifications.
  • Non-Twitter users can still benefit from the BeexGames RSS feed here. They can't post to it, however, unless they are willing to sign up for Twitter (which takes seconds!)

Airport tweet ruling is reserved

A man found guilty of sending a menacing tweet threatening to blow up an airport has won a challenge against his conviction.

Paul Chambers, 27, from Doncaster, who now lives in Northern Ireland, was found guilty in May 2010 of sending a "menacing electronic communication".

Mr Chambers tweeted he would blow up Robin Hood Airport in South Yorkshire when it was closed after heavy snow.

After a hearing at the High Court in London his conviction was quashed.

Mr Chambers said he had sent the tweet, which contained swear words, to his 600 followers in a moment of frustration after Robin Hood Airport, near Doncaster, was closed by snow in January 2010.
'Obvious joke'

He said he had never thought anyone would take his "silly joke" seriously.

The message Mr Chambers tweeted stated: "Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!!"

He was fined £385 and ordered to pay £600 costs after being convicted at Doncaster Magistrates' Court in May 2010.

His first appeal was dismissed by a crown court judge in November 2010, who said the electronic communication was "clearly menacing" and that airport staff were sufficiently concerned to report it.

Last month, John Cooper QC told the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, Mr Justice Owen and Mr Justice Griffith Williams it was obvious the tweet was a joke and it was sent by someone who did not hide his identity.

It was certainly not sent in the context of terrorism and it was wrong for the crown court to make such an association, he said.

Comedians Stephen Fry and Al Murray were among those supporting Mr Chambers' case.

Much as I like the idea of trolls being taught that they can't hide behind a keyboard, the fact that the police had to take action yet Twitter happily shut down a journalists account for criticising NBC doesn't sit well.

Breach of T&Cs was the line, wasn't it? I think Twitter, as a body, was protecting itself, more than anything.

Can't sell your tweets to marketing companies if they include personally identifiable information.

but for example this guy is following me now..

https://twitter.com/HitmanAB?uid=136166 ... nid=23+112

i gues he is a bot, as why would he be following me.. i rarely tweet in english (just to give you some guys some idea that i'm still alive) ..so he probs bly is a bot.. but err, 13k followers.. all bought? how does that work? and why?

I'm still on the hunt for a good Twitter client for OSX. Twitter and Twitterrific both crash at least once every couple of days. Tweetbot used to be brilliant, but the latest alpha has broken "pin to top" functionality, so every time I come back to my iMac I have hundreds of tweets to scroll through to get back to now.

Grrr...

Tweetbot doesn't work with TweetMarker for me at the moment, so it's completely useless. It seems okay in general, but it needs work. So I'm using Twiterrific at the moment, but dislike a lot about it.

Which brings me on to an annoyance about Twitter clients in general: when I read a mention in my main timeline, I absolutely hate having to switch to the mentions tab to stop it glowing. I want them to be marked as read as I go past.

Because they're not allowed iCloud support until the release proper, so it does say on their site that the synchronisation won't work.

Which is a shame, because there's no real point otherwise.

Indeed, however I like to have it always available on a little strip on the side of my screen, and the website doesn't let you do that.

Even Mountain Lion 'integration' isn't great. You can get notifications and compose tweets straight from your desktop, but click on a notification and? It opens the website in Safari.

Twitter for me is mostly read only, all this integration that allows me to tweet from anywhere is pretty much useless to me :)
I generally only tweet if i'm responding to something I have read.

I know about that. I mean the service TweetMarker, which came out before iCloud. It's what I've been using for ages now, but it doesn't work properly in Tweetbot for me; it'll sync to where I left off from other devices, but not sync its own position back to the service. I expect it'll be fixed at some point… it's only an alpha after all.

I don't know if iCloud will handle this better. But I like the guy behind TweetMarker enough to pay him for the service.

Not going into specifics (probably lieing), but the twitter bandwagon does more harm than good, I think. I'm fairly sure I've written of this before, but new examples have come to light. I think the poltiics of twitter's users lies to the left (maybe demographics, I dunno, more research needed). Sometimes, I think the abdwaggoning of things on it are ugly and downright rude. By and large, I don't think that someone should be berated for their support of the GOP or the stupid party, not by baying hrose through 140 characters. It's inelegant. And stuff.

The most recent one being a dog that was going to be put down as it was a danger and then people were "Save Lennox the Pitbull" he didn't want to hurt anything and it's a fucking chav dog owned by a chav owner in chav town that the court and experts decided was dangerous not Leona fucking Lewis. And that poor lass who didn't know who Neil Armstrong was, or the lass (Ok, she was a dirt mackam, but that's not her fault) who asked if Wimbeldon was ehld there every year (as a matter of fact, it hasn't). And the endless pintless fucking articles newspapers churn up about it as journalism is basically for thickos nowadays, unless you write for the times which noone under the age of 30 buys.

TLDR: it's worse than Mumsnet.

It's more musings, based upon things I see most. hence the "more research needed". I dunno what #tcot is.

And that's the problem -- selection bias.

You should stick to a medium that only allows you 140 characters, perhaps.
