I'm going to get rid of all my books, i'm a Kindle reader these days and haven't picked up a physical book in ages. Whenever I want to re-read one I just download it instead!

I'm going to keep a few of the rarer ones, but the rest are going to go.

Had a look online and I could only find one place that was like MusicMagpie that would let me scan them in and let me see if they were worth anything, and they only wanted about 10% of the ones I tried it with, for 30p each, so i'm not going to bother with that.

So, it's charity shops or the tip, but before I do that, I don't suppose anyone wants a load of books for free? Mainly sci-fi, fantasy and comedy stuff. I can do a list or at the very least take a photo or two at some point if you want me to be a bit more specific.

Collection only, obv. And i'm in no rush, so it might take a while for me to be bothered to organise anything :D

No help to you whatsoever, but I did this recently, too. I figured I wouldn't get any money, so I didn't even look down that route. The nice pub in Helsby down the road has a book-swap shelf, so I donated the entire lot to that. I hoped they'd end up in better hands there than giving them to a charity shop.

That's what I was going to suggest.
I was in a pub the other day with a shelf like that, and it had a Mil Millington book on it!

you said you had scanned your stuff into an online place like music magpie. I was wondering what it was called as I have used zapper and they have no scanning function, only a typing function and I wondered if it was a better place.

Fuck that shit. Without disposing of books our entire house would be made of them, and I would suffocate under the horrific likes of 'Unchained Melanie' and 'Rubber Gloves or Jimmy Choos'.

Your mistake there is allowing Mrs You to buy books unsupervised.

I'm also not convinced they count as "books".

There's a book case at the cottage, you could let people have their pick then leave the rest there maybe?

Mitt Romney tied his dog to a roof rack.

Anyway, I keep the exact amount of books necessary to slightly overfill one IKEA Billy bookcase. The rest got donated to charity, and I'm Kindle only for the time being.

Actually, the TT-RS would give your Lotus (and my Porsche) a seriously good run for its money. Not my cup of tea these days - 4wd, lousy steering and a chassis that struggles to cope, but 360PS and a shitload of torque, with relatively low weight, do come in handy. It's good for around 4.5 sec 0-60 and 175mph I think. (Hell, even the relatively lowly TT-S (with 275PS) probably would as well, if well driven and especially in the wet).

Whilst terribly 'uncool' in petrolhead circles, I really liked both my Mk 1 and Mk 2 V6. The former drove like a well sorted hot hatch - no bad thing in my eyes - and the latter was actually really quite good, whatever the motoring press like to claim. They both made fantastic daily drivers and were pretty swift. When it was wet, I used to love baiting the type of cars that we now drive, together with the M3/M5 brigade.

In the case of the Mk 1, although ubiquitous to be sure, it was undeniably a truly beautiful looking car and very un-Audi then, as now. I'd say that the likes of the 250PS Sport is a near certain future classic.

There's no denying that my Cayman and Boxster are in a class above, but then so they bloody should be, they cost a good deal more, both to buy, run and maintain. They're a damn sight more temperamental as well.

(As for books, I refuse to chuck any out and don't have a Kindle anyway. I've got all manner of shite on bookshelves, including stuff I was reading when I was about 16! I'm really squeamish about chucking books out for some reason; just can't bring myself to do it, despite being a totally ruthless non-hoarder regarding everything else).

The phrase 'Getting rid of books' is so painful to read. Keep them. Keep the books. Not getting rid of books is one of the essential behaviours you learn as a child along with always washing your hands after you use the loo.

Yes, it's much better to keep unwanted books on creaking shelves in overfull houses than it is to try to find people who may appreciate them.

I can't understand any reason to want to put a perfectly good book in the bin *shudders* it's such a waste. But then in my opinion so is leaving books that you know you will never read again on a shelf to gather dust. I have started passing mine on one by one now, they are meant to be read after all. Just finished one last night, so about to start on Grim...'s so he can have it back at the cottage.

:this: I've read them all, I'm never going to read them again, I'm going to give them away so other people can read them.

I love books, I have done ever since I was a kid, I used to go to the library twice a week with my mum from the age of about 5, I'd already read everything in the primary school library before I had even joined the school, I used to go into the library at uni just to smell it.

However, I don't have the space to keep them and the content is more important than the medium.
