My long worn Office World computer chair is suffering, it's 5 years old and is one of those ones where the back is attached to the seat by means of both bolting onto the arms, the right one of which could snap at any second.

I could just go Office World and buy something similar again for £50-£75 but is there a better option, American blogs list Humanscale and Mirra chairs but neither seems to be available in the UK.

So, without going TOO insane budgetwise, what's a comfortable chair to be used far too much, with arms, and ideally with room for me to occasionally sit in back destroyed cross legged positions? Anyone got anything good?

God, you've totally ripped off Malc's awesome original 'My chair has broke' thread on WoS. For shame, Dudley, this is a pitiful new low, even by your sorry standards.

overly harsh language totally rocks

Heh.

Interesting, that ebay seller is but 4 miles from my office so I could probably manage to do a pick up....

I deliberately picked one that had a current bid price of £6. There's only 17 hours left and although I suspect it'll shoot up, it might be worth a punt.

Especially if they're local-ish to you.

Yeah, Northolt is 9miles from where I am now, 4.4 from the office and I own a car.

Hopefully the pick up only will keep the bid price down, I shall watch ta.

Complete derail, but what did Chinny do to get banned from WoS?

Due to excessive boredom and the efficiency of the search on WoS, I was able to locate said chair-related thread where I noticed that Chinny was in the Banned group (along with Voldron, but I don't know who that is).
I'd have to guess at excessive Amstrad love.

I have a chair that is a knock off version of an Aeron and it's great. My old workplace had the real deal and iit was fantastic.

I did post a link on World Of (Linda Barker -Ed) a few years ago to a company who were selling surplas Aerons. Buggered if I can remember the URL though.

I got a chair from Staples, recently. In the actual shop, not the website. £59.99 for a big executive leather chair with plush ergo back, cushioned arms, built fairly solid and is lovely to sit in. Much nicer than my old one.

It's a DPA something or other.

Wow. He probably did something hyper awful. Like help Stu get a free Wii or something. He hates that.

I didn't even know I was in the banned group on World of (Linda Barker - Ed). Perhaps (Linda Barker - Ed) was hoping that I one day might wish to log in again and would then run away with tears streaming from my face as my login was refused?

Of course, the fatal flaw in this plan being that I never wish or need to login again. And no I don't know why I am on his special list, although I do understand he is having a new roll of paper delivered for his list of enemies:

I made a chair from staples. First time I sat on it my arse ended up looking like Desparate Dan's chin.

Yeah that's the back up plan, they have some reasonable ones but I was wondering if there's better out there.

The answer appears to be "yes, but you'll pay for it". There doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of mid-range chairs. I.e - Better than Staples, slightly cheaper than the pope.

There's a pretty good range at Ikea that fall between Staples and the hyper-expensive ones.

Honestly, if you spend that amount of time sitting in a chair I'd spend the money and think if it as money saved in future osteopath fees. Once your back starts moaning about years of sitting in a crappy chair you have the rest of your life to lament false economies, as it won't ever get better like it once was.

This is what I was going to say.

I got an Argos one that sounds similar to your Staples one, and it broke in the same way. The Ikea one is much more sturdy. The drill holes in the wood and the arms are steel lined to stop that specific split occurring. And it is a similar price. I think they also have one similar to that chair up there.

The same logic applies to buying a bed/mattress. My back is known as being a bit of a trouble-maker so its good to take one less problem out of the equation.

The back care specialists at work actually recommend buying a reasonably priced mattress and replacing it often rather than keeping a dead expensive one for years.

Yeah, it's snapping on both screw holes in the right arm. I shall Ikea myself if Gaz's suggested ebay heads for the hills.

I wouldn't buy a chair without having sat on it any more than I'd buy shoes without trying them on. Even if they were meant to be the best shoes in the world and had featured in numerous TV programmes.

Sorry, I wasn't being dramatic enough. Not only will it never ever ever return to it's once trouble free state it will almost certainly deteriorate to the point where you will spend considerable time in your life in a lot of pain. The statistics for back problems are so high that anybody who does a job that involves sitting in a chair for extended periods of the day, every day, WILL get a bad back. And if you're really lucky it will give out completely in a very painful fashion, with neither warning nor sense of timing.

I suffered from a grumbling lower back problem for years that came and went and I occasionally went to an osteopath when I got a bit stiff. Mine gave out completely without warning while on holiday 3 years ago, cue truly unimaginable pain, collapsed in an awkward locked position on a hotel room floor literally screaming in between gasping for air as I was hyperventilating to deal with the pain until an orthopaedic surgeon arrived with painkillers, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants - even so I was left in a complete inability to move anything other than my head and arms for three days solid and an 18 month recovery period where I went from fit to fat. That pain was so intense, I'm very careful about my back now :(

Anyway, I think you can get decent chairs that are similar to the aerons which don't cost beer change out of a grand :)

What you haven't mentioned there are your habits. In particular don't stay in a chair for long periods of time, even with a fancy chair you'll still be in trouble if you don't get up and walk around often enough.

This is pickup only from mere metres from my front door, it's not actually an aeron and it's a bit old but it could go cheap.

Anyone know anything about this make?

£250 is a small price to pay for avoiding crippling back pain, or buying a new chair every few years. And probably a better investment than a PS3.

I think you could get a good, solid chair of some kind for that sort of money.

I think you could get a good, solid chair for considerably less, diminishing returns and all that. If someone gets terrible back pain it's more than likely because they spent far too much time sitting on their arse, have terrible posture or just because of their physiology, throwing lots of money at a chair will make almost no difference.

I should point out my back is pretty much fine, the point of the thread was more to find out whether there's better chairs out there than at Staples :)

Any back issues would far more likely be caused by the £50 chair I have at work :)

Hello my precious love, I had hoped to see you again soon.

I like your avatar. Is it from an Adult Swim cartoon about... a rat, I think, whose boss is a whale? I really liked that, though I only saw the first four or five, before the site I used to procure such things shut down. I especially enjoyed the episode where he is driving a bus, whilst his little friend (some kind of primate?) gives a lesson in rockin' the drums.

Or not?
