I think you're wrong.

On the top of this screenshot, Beex in Chrome (left) and Safari (right) on the MBPwRD. Zoomed at 1:1. On the bottom: Beex in Chrome on my iMac, zoomed at 2:1 (so it ends up the same size as the MBPwRD screenshot).

Looks to me like Chrome is the same in both cases? I have other screenshots of the same thing on tuaw.com, showing the same difference, so it's nothing specific to Beex.

The fonts aren't fucked -- it's just the retina display looks that good.

Ah, now that looks much more like it. I do have to say though, I can now barely tell the difference between the two.

Also, why the shitting fuck don't macs have a delete key?!

Are you clicking through and viewing them full screen? If you look at the inline graphic within phpbb, then you see a HiDPI screen downsampled by your browser to normal DPI levels -- so it's unsurprising you won't see a difference there.

Yup. Barely noticeable unless I zoom right into super-huge image. Stop trying to justify it to yourself :)

Uhhh, I'm not justifying anything; I'm not buying one. But if you don't view that image at 1:1 on your screen of course the difference will be obscured.

The only way to see a true representation of the difference is on a 200+ DPI screen, but you don't have one at home, do you?

Craster should zoom in and then move back until he has the equivalent of 200 DPI.

I have a delete key.

Also, I like the combination for the # character. In America they call it the pound, yes? So it's alt + £ (3), or the alternative pound.

Function + backspace deletes text ahead of the caret. Command + backspace deletes files etc. I think. It’s all muscle memory now.

The Apple software driver pack makes Windows behave the same way for other stuff too, like trackpad gestures and right-click mechanism.

I was going to ask, Is the procedure for installing Apple drivers for The Windows partition quite easy then?

When you run the Bootcamp install wizard, it downloads the latest version of all drivers for your specific Mac and puts them on a USB stick. First time you boot Windows, you run install.exe on the stick, and drivers for everything (graphics, sound, trackpad, keyboard, wifi, etc etc) are installed in one go.

I've never seen a Windows OEM manage anything that slick, which is pretty poor form when you think about it.

The only issue is that if you're making a Win7 USB build disk, it formats it NTFS. It's then pretty likely you'll (as I did) try to get the bootcamp setup to put the drivers on the same USB stick (after all, it's already plugged in, right?) Only, OSX can't write to an NTFS volume. It doesn't tell you that it failed either, oddly.

Huh, interesting. I assume you fed it an ISO of the boot CD? I've only ever done it with physical media so I hadn't come across that.

The NTFS format disk is probably a prerequisite, so it's hard to see what Apple could do to get around this. Partition the USB device, maybe.

Another look at the difference between the MacBook Retina display and my iMac. Chopped down to just a few words so it'll work better on small screens. See if you can tell which one is which...

Attachment:
retina-words.png

Again, that's the Retina display image at the native pixel res (meaning it'll look about twice as big as life if you look at this on a normal monitor) and my iMac's screen zoomed to 200% (to end up at the same size as the Retina image).

Oh, sure. It just left me somewhat befuddled, is all. Saying "I can't write to that - it's NTFS formatted" would have helped matters. As opposed to saying "Completed successfully".

I've only ever installed Windows using optical media (or RIS/SCCM) before. Can I just copy an ISO to the USB stick, or is it more complicated than that?

So, fellow Mac users, tell me some cool things that OS X does that I may not be able to figure out without reading the manual. I don't want to end up with WTB and not know how to bring up different domain extensions on the iPhone keyboard.

Also, I'm finding OS X absolutely brilliant - I wish I'd defected from Windows years ago. One question I have is, did iOS heavily influence how the later versions of OS X feel, or did it start with OS X and filter into iOS? The App Store is brilliant!

Things I wish I had known from the start.

Download Alfred from the app store, it's like spotlight, but it actually finds the application I'm looking for, rather than flashing it up for a millisecond before replacing it with a thousand documents that bear no relation to my search... Plus it's free.

The # key is alt-3
Delete is alt-backspace

Use spaces and lock apps to different desktops by right clicking on them in the dock and choosing the option, makes life a lot cleaner and more orderly.

Move your dock to the left of the screen, bottom is for newbs :D

OSX memory management isn't the greatest, inactive memory is supposed to be the same as free, but if you get to under 100mb free memory my machine grinds to a halt as is pages out to disk all the time, A free app called purge will fix that. However on an ssd machine that may not be an issue.

Aperture is cheap as chips on the app store and much better than iPhoto, get it.

Finder hides loads of stuff from you, I have an apple script that allows me to turn on and off "system" files easily, which is handy. Google should tell you how.

Finder is pretty awful, but you get used to it.

iTunes is actually useable on OSX as opposed to the windows version.

As a web developer, there are two things that OS X does that drives me up the bloody wall.

1) It leaves stupid fucking ._DS_Store files all over the bloody disk.

2) It hides any files starting with . - so .htaccess files (quite important) are invisible. There is a Terminal command you can use to show all hidden files, but then you get a shit load of extra bollocks that you don't want to see.

Isn't this just inherited from it's *nix roots rather than specific OS X behaviour?
