Its been a while since we've tried one so if your interested vote in the poll at the top and add your suggestions to the thread for games to play.

Given how hard it is to get people to keep playing its probably a 5 or 6 week set but you can drop in / drop out whenever you want to - as before I'll pull together a version of MAME which will run on Windows plus all the rom files required into a single zip so you can download / click & play

Games will run for 7 days so you'll have a weekend at least to get a score in , and if you have another device which can play MAME your free to use that (iMame / Icade or I know TheVision has a GP2x) if it will play the games

If you dont know what games you'd like to try go to http://www.arcade-museum.com/ and browse

Current list :

Track & Field
Hyper Sports
Wonderboy
R-Type
R-Type II
Q*Bert
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Shinobi
Joust
Asteroids Deluxe
Street Fighter II : The World Warrior
Miss World '96 Nude
Gals Panic
Chase HQ
Road Blaster
Blazing Star
Pulstar
Splatterhouse
BombJack
Space Invaders '95
Super Space Invaders
Mr Do

Ooohhhh super, I did enjoy the Shoot Em Ups challenge.

If anyone had told me prior to that challenge that I'd be posting fucking Space Invaders scores to BEEX at 3am in the morning, I'd have called them mad.....

Sign me up for the next one!

Can we play Q*Bert please? Or at least add it to the vote. I'm not sure whether the game is genius, or horribly unfair and annoying but I reckon the MAME challenge can answer that for me.

I can make it just a few clicks for Windows but are you not one of those turtle neck wearing people ?

If so I can write some basic instructions , give you the files but if it doesnt work then we would need to do some troubleshooting stuff.

And for everyone else if your in stick some suggestions for games down so far we have :

Track & Field
Hyper Sports
Wonderboy
R-Type
R-Type II
Q*Bert
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Shinobi

I nominate Yi Ar Kung Fu. Or Yi Ar Kung Fun, as my phone wants to call it.
Or the original Shinobi.

I want to nominate paperboy but I think the controls are a bit too complicated especially if people are using keyboards.

Can we add Asteroids Deluxe to the poll, oh, and Street Fighter 2 The World Warrior? That has a scoring system didn't it?

I'm quite looking forward to playing Track and Field and Hypersports. I'll have to dig out my old Namco arcade stick so I can hammer the buttons on that.

I can see that going down well when the wife and baby are trying to sleep!

I should be able to map the buttons to my wired 360 pad and hopefully do OK.

Certainly I can manage fine on MAMEOX using a standard XBox pad on the old XBox.

Been so long since I used MAME... were those two Qix clones? I always liked Volfied, but can't remember if we've already had it in a previous challenge.

Yeah, there are loads of porn Qix rip-offs in MAME, some of the ladies are quite nice on some of them, and they use all sorts of bizarre samples stolen from all over the place like Jean Michel Jarre and what have you.

As long as the ROM revisions are the same I'll probably use the old XBox for the entirety of the challenge, then I can sit on the comfy sofa and play on the big telly :)

I agree Paperboy is a bit akward without the proper controls (it is playable but i'd suggest skipping it) , Asteroids Deluxe is a little odd for a pad but works and are you sure you want plain vanilla SF2 and not one of the newer ones (I find from Turbo back seems very slow)

Nope - other similar games I know of are
Hunchback Olympics http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=8104
and Hyper Sports Special edition
http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=8169

We've played the C64 version of Volified in a previous challenge - however as its been a while since the last one there are no restrictions if you want to nominate stuff thats came up before

Ian Fairies wrote:

I've added both but i will check - I think Spyhunter is a bit akward due to the control method (I remember the pedals being difficult) - I should also add that you can use any controller you want but I'll try to make sure that they are all playable with keys.

I think Spy Hunter is awkward as it used an analogue pedal.

I agree with Paperboy though, skip it.

As for Street Fighter 2, I just think that the original has a certain charm and it's harder. Also, didn't the later ones do away with the points system?

They all have a points system - can you have a quick go of 'plain' SF2 on MAME and let me know if you want to keep it - i agree it has charm and because of the slower speed it becomes a much more tactical game but i think people who are used to the more frantic newer games will not really get it (I still remember the cheat code on the SNES to allow you to bump up regular SF2 to turbo by increasing the number of stars to 10 in the menu - on the capcom logo down/R/up/L/left/right/Y/B/X/A)

I'm sure there was no need for the "left/right" bit in the middle. I still have muscle memory over doing that each time I booted up Hyper Fighting!

Anyway, yes I'll join in and make sure I have at least a few attempts at the game of the week.

I'd like to nominate the very original Bomb Jack as my choice.

I had the JAP cart for it originally I think there was a slight variation between them but yes mines is muscle memory as well (and you had to be quick)

Yeah, I was playing that one on Taito Legends 2* this morning. Love the boss fights!

*Sadly, Metal Black and Darius Gaiden seem to run in 50hz on this, even with the collection itself set to 60. There's also a bug in Metal Black that stops you from focusing the laser.

I like playing games that other people suggest on the MAME challenges because it opens my eyes to games that I might not normally play.

I've got loads of MAME roms on my PC but tend to keep going back to the same dozen or so.

We should at some point do an obscure mame challange and do some of the more odd ones which you'd never try.

Here are three very quick examples

Borench by Sega : http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=7195

Image
Image

A very unusual marble madness / puzzle game where you can place corner tiles down to have the ball bounce around them to the exit - more points for looping paths , collecting question marks and for traveling the longest distance (to re-cross a path you need the + squares and you'll find its quicker to dump titles you dont want over the side than placing them and trying to put new tiles on top)

Biomechanical toy by Gaelo : http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=7122

Image
Image

A very weird platform shooter which has lots of hidden items (shoot the flying hat for stuff and any walls that glow can be shot to drop other power ups)

Funky Jet by Mitchell : http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... me_id=7866

This reminds me a lot of Tumblepop / snow brothers - fly around punching (or shooting) the enemies - and being able to dispatch them in larger groups gives you a bigger score

That might be quite difficult , from the list at the start of the thread I had not played Pulstar but tried it yesterday - so you'll need to get more nominations in quick !

(BTW I intend to finalist the list and draw things before the weekend which will give me time to build a rom zip and a zip with MAME included before starting next week)

A wonderful game and one of my favorites - if your concerned over time then all you can do is try - if your concerned about the technical side of it then I'm pretty confident i can get MAME running for you

'tev, dick.
We played it in one of the old MAME challenges. I seem to recall doing quite well.

Here are all the old ones (that have counters, at least), in case you're feeling nostalgic for some nostalgia.

http://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/counter/8bit.php (when Mr Dave fucking completed Jet Set Willy!)
http://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/counter/c64.php (which I totally didn't play in)
http://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/counter/mame.php (in which I did surprisingly well)
http://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/counter/shmup.php (which I didn't play in. Again. But I'm sure I did)

And that's it. And none of them had Mr Do. Lame.
