I've spent the past few years buying crappy computer chairs for the computer desk at home, for a £50 a go each time they break in some way. Current one has dodgy arms and could do with replacing.

This time though, as i'm getting on in years and my knees in particular are starting to feel the effect of a day spent in a bad chair, I think I should actually get a good chair. I spend a fair amount of time in it after all, especially as I spend a few months out of each year playing WoW working from home.

What do I get? I want a good ergonomic chair but at real prices, not business prices. I'd be willing to spend a couple of hundred if need be.

Any recommendations?

Try getting up and moving around more. Expensive chairs will help with your back and knees an infinitesimally tiny bit compared to that.

If you can afford one, get one. I bought a new Aeron for my home office recently, and it's made a world of difference. I still get back pain, but the severity and frequency of 'attacks' has dropped markedly since I got the new chair. Previously, I'd been using a £200-ish IKEA chair, which despite being supposedly qualified for eight-hour stints really wasn't suitable for more than four or five hours' use per day. (By contrast, I only really have problems with the Aeron when I work absurdly long days without many breaks.)

True, and I do usually, but i'm starting to feel the odd twinge here and there, even with doing that. So I want to head it all off at the pass, so to speak

The only problem with Aerons (and other mesh seats) is that the mesh seat base edges can be uncomfortable for me, they can cut into my legs behind the knees a bit if I don't sit perfectly on them, and i'm not a perfect posture sitter by any stretch of the imagination! Mrs T came into the room and called me Gollum the other day, due to the way I was "sitting" on the chair

Learning to sit properly will help you more than any expensive chair.

The way I figure it, I need a chair that isn't going to fall apart every year or so and need replacing, and I might as well get a good ergonomic one if i'm going to do that, to at least try and help me sit better.

If you get an Aeron, sit back into the chair and tilt the seat forward slightly, which shifts weight to your legs and reduces pressure on your thighs. Or so said the bloke who set my Aeron up—and he was right.

I went for the Wave in the end, second hand chair idea was just a bit too icky...

It's here! And very nice it is too. Seems very sturdy and well made, time will tell on how comfy it is, but initial results are promising.

Tips I was given for not killing your back over time: arm rests at desk height; seat tipped forwards slightly, if possible; back straight but flexible (assuming the seat has a strong spring). Hope your new chair helps.

Wired mice! How quaint.

I've recently bought a new mouse. It has no wires and it's great. (apart from the Logitech software being a bit rubbish. My pc was convinced it was a Microsoft mouse and that it was all up to date)

Got to be wired, to get that extra 5ms drop on those Alliance sons of bitches!

My new mouse at home is wireless (Logitech Performance MX), but for a long, long time, I couldn't use wireless mice -- I could feel the laggy responses. They're better, now, and my reflexes have dulled with age.

I still don't like wireless mice.
It's not just the lag (which I doubt I'd notice, I'm not that kind of person), but the balance feels wrong to me.

That's the one I have and it's really nice.

Both logitech mice I have allow for variable battery placement -up yo two batteries with a central and rear slot- allowing for a shift in weight.
I find that a nice touch.

Yeah I love my Logitech wireless mouse, especially the weighted spinny wheel. The wire on the one I use at work pisses me right off. Next you'll be saying that they were better when they had balls in.

Of course they're better with balls in. The balls go on the top though, naturally.

There are plenty of different ones around, but after spending 18 hours sat in a seat the same I can definitely vouch that they piss on any office chair for comfort and support. Not only that but the back is fully adjustable too unlike nearly all computer chairs.

Well, no, you can't. Not unless you've sat in them all. I'm a bit sceptical that something designed to sell to teenage boys by looking like a racing car seat is going to be better than something just designed for the job.

It's a cheap bucket seat, stuck on some wheels.
I had to spend a fair amount of cash to get a bucket seat in the mx5 that was comfortable to use for more than an hour at a time, more than that seat and that was second hand. That eBay seat will be just as bad as a £50 office chair.

I still think the bucket seats in my Tomcat are among the most comfortable I've tried in a car.

It's hard to tell, of course, because even a pigmy would struggle with the legroom.

Mine were very similar to that. I know they were cheap. Can't even remember who made them now, but they were basically the same shape and style and material as yours.

And they were heavenly. The foam was firm enough and you were held in place very well. Which is why I like them, as they offer support for your back, sides and legs.

Computer chairs don't seem to offer full support. Sure, if you sit up perfectly straight in the right position in one then yes, they can be OK, but when you spend the entire day sitting in one you tend to adopt bad posture. I know I do in mine. I just like to be held in, in the right position

To get the best sitting experience in a bucket seat, you'd need a 5 point seatbelt.

It's great, no pain at all from long periods of sitting at my desk Seems to be pretty well built, but if I bought it again I would get the one with the mesh back rather than the leather back, as it can get a bit hot. Mesh backed chairs look even worse than this monstrosity though

Mrs T hated it at first due to what it looked like, but has admitted that she likes it now regardless of that, due to how comfy it is, so it must be pretty good!

When my old office was reorganised for hot desking we got new Aeron mesh chairs and the damn things aggravated my sciatica. And I don't have bony arse, but for me, sitting on a mesh seat is like sitting on a plank of wood. No give in it at all.

A few weeks after we swapped to hot desking we had a seating consultant come in to offer advice to anyone having problems with the Aerons, and a few of us got one of these and it was the dog's bollocks. The sciatica eased off right away and the damn thing was so comfortable I could have slept in it.

I was never too keen on my mesh seat. Then I sat on it one day, a metal bolt sheared through, and now the seat base rests on the post. It's much more comfy.
