For the first time in my Cardiff library career I've been forced to become blunt and final with someone. (Cue Dimrill joke.) The computers have gone down and Andy Warhol lookalike bloke who carries a shoebox crammed with scribblings and who is in EVERY SINGLE DAY has gone into a massive huff banging on about how "It was hardly worth coming in at all then?" in a fierce, weary, cynical voice despite having already been on the computers for two hours and oh just fuck off won't you, you twonk eyed git.

Everyone else has been pretty reasonable about it, fortunately.

Offer him his money back.

When I worked at the royal armouries museum and people moaned about missing a show or not liking a show, I would offer them their money back.

Of course, being a public museum everything was free. So they would think they had won for a second then realise I was being a dick.

HO HO!

Alert bexxers will remember a brief note about Lada entering the top line FIA World Touring Car Championship a while ago. I'm just watching the latest rounds from Portugal and the top of the 2 Ladas finished 15th/24 in race 1.

That's a lot of embarrassed Seat, BMW and Honda drivers there... You'd pretty much have to kill yourself rather than tell your friends a Lada beat you wouldn't you?

Am currently watching The Punisher.

It's actually not terrible. At least so far. However, it's not yet done anything to earn an 18 tag. Try harder, Frank.

Yeah I believe they're now running their own engine rather than the near 20 year old modified Vauxhall units. They've got a couple of minor homologation issues so they're still officially an independent team (hence the less than subtle lack of Lada branding on the attached pic) but they're hoping to have that sorted soon so they can become a full member of the championship.

Frankly, good luck to them. They're racing (effectively) VW, BMW and General Motors on equal terms. For a company that tiny and so far behind technically to have the lead car finish 12 laps of a grand prix circuit less than half a minute behind the winner is extraordinarily good work for less than halfway through year 1.

Bad news.

gf just rang and woke me up. She had to put our little doggy, the one with the heart problem, to sleep about an hour ago.

I'm about to dunk my head under the shower then go over to see her. It's very, very sad. :(

Sorry to ehar that matey. Hope all works out OK.

On another note or two: I saw Pushing Daisies last night and it was rather good stuff, so I recommend it to the house.

Also:

Off to Oxford in a bit to look at a real life version of 26 inc goodness and 32 inch goodness. Does the XBox come with a HD cable thingy cable, or do I need to buy a new one, same question for the wii as well. (I already have a HDD freeview box to record stuff on, so tuner is not necessary).

We're ok. gf is a great deal more upset than me, but then I'm good at being sombre and manly. Very sad, and its cost an arm & a leg too.

Anyway, best not to dwell. The UFO auction is a good'un, next he'll be telling you is that he's the late son of a negerian government official who had control of state funds worth $15,000,000 (FIFTEEN MILLION US DOLLARS) that he'd like to give to you, humble friend.

Aha, I didn't realise exactly what Grim...'s bulk friend importer doobrey did. Arses. I wish I had done (my fault), a month or two ago. Sigh. Anyway, I've despatched XBLAH requests up the ying-yang. If you wish to decline that's absolutely fine with me, okay.

Cheers Doc, it sadly got to the point where it was for the best. He had a big fit last week and his breathing just didn't recover from it, and got steadily worse. :(

Had to suspend the cheap eating directive and take the gf out for a meal today. I'll have to record it as an exception to the experiment, I suppose.

If I remember rightly, the XBox comes with a component cable that does HD, but the Wii only comes with a composite cable (possibly RGB, but I think even that was extra), so you need to buy a component cable for that if you want to do 480p.

My original XBox didn't have a component cable, just composite. Same with the Wii.

The Xbox Pro/Premium/Elite does come with a component (or perhaps HDMI on the new ones). The Arcade/Core doesn't.

The big black original Xbox can do HD, but the vast majority of games aren't and you'll need to buy a component cable.

The wii can't do HD anyway, but you'll need a component cable to make it look a little less shit on a 21st century TV.

Just warning you that some people won't respond to requests through it, not because they don't want you, but because they don't get the invite in the first place, and I think it's due to spaces in their names.

Oh, in *their* names? Oh, sigh.

@nervouspete: that would be the album she's recorded with 4AD artist M. Ward, after he was impressed with her voice in the movie Elf? There are two pages about in the newest issue of either The Word* or Mojo.

* my favourite music mag, and sir, if ever there was a magazine that seems perfect for the nervouspetes of the world, it'd be this one.

Fair enough. Personally, I can't stand wine, have never even considered throwing a dinner party, own zero art, don't consider myself snobbish, and like pretty much every genre of music there is. I just like all the really funny articles, relevant opinion pieces, and interviews with people who, at worst, can come up with a good quip or two. Which is more than I can say for any other music mag out there. It did a lovely multi-page tribute to Humphrey Littleton last month, for example.

Art snobs? Are you sure you're not thinking of The Wire?

myoptika wrote:

And yet, I supposedly sent an invite to absolutely everyone, having first ensured I was logged in accordingly at Xbox.com

I think it's bost.

Nah, The Word. It's just every time I read it I find smug, sneery comments in it that make me want to throw it against the wall. It makes me very angry indeed.

And it's still the only music mag I'd ever buy, because the rest are so much worse.

Picking up 26 inches of LCD goodness tomorrow. I have checked cables and I have component for XBox 360 and wii component is not too much more, and said cables are accesible from back of telly so that saves me cash until i get a switch. yay.

There are universal component cables you can get, I have a set that does 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii, so it's even easier to switch between them.
