One of the cops takes an interest in Agent 47, calls out to him. "Hey I know you. You're Foster. I thought you left the force years ago."


Reminds me of Crysis 2's visor mode, with its little "tactical options" prompts that give you some suggestions you can heed or ignore at will. There's a lot of talk of making the game less trial-and-error, less one-slip-and-restart-level; you get a better sense of how suspicious people are, when you are hiding in shadows or in a disguise, and if you slip you can be more cautious and recover. These all sound like positive changes to me, I have to say. The similarly to the last Splinter Cell game, which also abandoned some of the series core values and came out a much stronger game for it, is quite apt I think.

The demo takes place in Chicago. There's a citywide manhunt for Agent 47. The gameplay opens after we see 47 jump through a window in a gothic library and police come charging in on the hunt for him. Ageny 47 begins the level unarmed, but that's rarely an issue.

Blystad tells us that enemies have been developed to be not just smarter, but more complex in the way they approach a situation. "They have an intelligence spectrum to give them more emotions and sense," he says.

Agent 47 is crouched behind a second floor railing, on the floor below him cops spread out searching for him. They're talking to each other about the search, but also about other things.

"That's it boys, I want this fucking place turned upside down," the cop in charge shouts. "Find the lights, someone get me blueprints."

Using Instinct mode I can see that there's a nearby break in the railing, a place that will allow me to drop down to the maze of bookcases below. I guide Agent 47 to the drop and fall to the floor, making a noise.

Hitman Absolution Promises an Evolution in Agent 47 Kills, Skills and Personality

One of the cops notice, on the screen a semi circle appears with a subtle arrow poking out of it, showing me that someone in that direction is noticing me. It grows longer the more visible or obvious I become.

This attention meter, the tell us, allows Agent 47 to "surf on the fringes of being discovered." It's a neat way to avoid the black and white of early Hitman games that often led to a lot of trail and error replays in a level.

I pull back, and the meter drops away. Pressing a button I can push Agent 47 into cover, once locked in, he stays in cover as you move unless you pull him away from his hiding spot. This makes traversing cover in big areas and moving from cover to cover much easier.

As I make my way toward the center of the room I'm in the lights flicker and come on. The cops have discovered the fuse box and restored power. I don't have to do anything about it, but taking out the fuse box is an option. I can take out the nearby cops too or simply work around them.

There's a lot of back and forth between the cops looking for me, not just checking in, but talking to each other, like they're buddies.

I decide to take out the fuse box and slip away undetected, leaving two cops to mess around with the box as I continue my way out of the library. In one of the demos I witnessed, Agent 47 slips up behind one of the cops and chokes him to death with a power cord he found on the floor.
"If you sneak up on someone to kill them from behind we're not going to fuck it up for you."

I move around to the center of the library, where a cop is looking down into a hole. I grab a nasty looking pair of scissors and approach him from behind. Then I decide it would be interesting to see what happens if I let him see me. When he turns around I wait until he alerts everyone around us before I kill him.

This kicks out a "major bug" but it also demonstrates that I can approach this mission however I'd like, quietly, aggressively, with giant scissors, or in the case of the demo I watched, armed with a marble bust.

In the demo, Agent 47 knocks the cop into the hole with a bust and then slips back into darkness. When a second cop comes to investigate what happened to his buddy, 47 pulls him off the second floor ledge and into the hole as well.

Agent 47 breaks another cop's neck with a dropped baton, and then grabs a cop as a human shield. Now everyone sees him. He backs away toward a staircase as the cop begs for his life. At the bottom of the screen a bunch of red arrows point to all of the cops now aiming weapons at him.

Agent 47 knocks the cop out and runs to the stairs and the rest of the police open fire. Agent 47 takes out two cops with a gun, using what I found to be relatively snappy aiming.

Elverdam tells me the team went to great lengths to fix what he called the "bit finicky" mechanics of the previous games.

"If you sneak up on someone to kill them from behind we're not going to fuck it up for you," he said, meaning that they hope gameplay mechanics won't get in the way. "Blood Money felt like too easy or too sloppy, on the other games we didn't support shooting as much as we wanted to.

"We always wanted it to feel like you could handle a gun like a trained assassin."

Back in the game, 47 runs up a set of stairs, gunfire chewing up the cover around him as he moves. On the third floor he walks across a beam as it is shredded by gunfire. Turning around he shoots a chain holding a chandelier, dropping it into the cops crowded on the floor below.

Bursting through a door, 47 finds himself on the roof of a building overlooking Chicago, a helicopter slips into the scene, its spotlight cutting across the ground in front of him.

He runs across the roof, the helicopter firing on him as he makes his way into a room filled with cages and pigeons. There'a a quick cinematic moment as Agent 47 runs and jumps between building, before players are returned to gameplay with the hitman taking out a cop and putting on his uniform as a disguise.

"With disguises we wanted to make it less binary," Elverdam says. "You are allowed to walk around more freely. It feels more organic."

This freedom of choice, Blystad says, is a key part of the Hitman experience.

"Disguises and impersonations are something that have always been a key feature in the game," he said. "That has been taken to a new level in this game."

I disagree with your praise of this for "doing a Splinter Cell". The gameplay I've seen makes it look like an action-packed "stealthy" Gears of War game. Hitman: Blood Money was absolutely fantastic. I just want that game with nicer graphics, better controls and a better UI. I'm seriously concerned that they've turned this into another cover-based third person shooter rather than a completely open-ended, do whatever you like, assassinate-em-up. I hope to cripes that the demo they've been showing off is just one way to complete that section out of many, rather than the way the only way game is meant to be played.

We have more than enough third person action shooters with stealth elements. Hitman was totally unique. It certainly wasn't perfect - it was clunky and unforgiving. It wasn't a very "modern" game, I suppose. I'm happy for this stuff to be cleaned up, but I'm really dreading a massive dumbing down from the company that brought us... Kane and Lynch 2.

I don't think it's the same thing, though. They just made the new Splinter Cell more accessible. The core gameplay was essentially the same, although they did remove some of the more detailed stuff such as hiding bodies. If they make Hitman the same as Splinter Cell - i.e. a stealth action third person shooter - they've completely removed everything that was Hitman. They've made Splinter Cell with a bald guy. What's the point?

I want to be able to plan a mission, go in, use any route from a choice of loads, kill the mark and get out without even being seen. Or run in guns blazing. Or the many possibilities in-between. I don't want to run around killing cops and hiding behind waist-high walls. Very worried!

ZOMFG! WIF FUNNY BUTTIN THERE DUMMING IT DOWN FOR TEH N00BZ!!!

The way I see it it's just another way to play it. Burst in like a one man army & kill everyone, bump them off stealthily like a spy, set traps, do what the funny button says, etc. Sounds like another Hitman game to me, full of possibilities & no real correct way to do anything.

Well yeah, I hope so. The problem is - nobody has expressly came out and said that. They've just played the game to demonstrate it in a totally non-Hitman-like way and ran off cackling.

Just so long as it doesn't pay to have the Instinct Mode on permanently, like in Arkham Asylum.

That said, I found Hitman: Blood Money to be quite dull, and with horrible controls (and an annoying tutorial).

Eh? I'm not arsed about that bit. It's the running around shooting people in the face and balls-out action I'm worried about, with no indication that you'll be able to do the old pure stealth gameplay hiding bodies and stuff.

Adding an Arkham Asylum style sixth sense thing is neither here nor there.

Hitman Blood Money was boring and awkward, I seem to recall I played it for longer than I actually wanted to, waiting for the good stuff to start, but it didn't.

Not to say that Absolution will be crap too, but it needs to be a lot better than Blood Money was.

It was certainly clunky and quite poorly made generally - bit of a shoddy PC port/high res Original Xbox game - but dull it weren't! You could attempt the missions any which way you chose. Your imaginations are dull!

I don't think I like the genre TBH, so maybe it's not the game that was at fault, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Stealth-em-ups in general I find dull, what was that one on the PC all those years ago? Thief? That was boring too.

Plus it's all very well saying 'Ooooh it lets you do things how you want to' but in reality it's all constrained by what game will allow, yeah you might have choices but only to a point.

I hated Bat-vision (or whatever it's called) in Arkham. I found I was playing the game more in that mode as I was being compelled by the game design to follow enemies I couldn't see, look for hidden passagwways, unlockables and other random tat etc rather than enjoying the lovely graphics. Same with Crysis. By telling you explicitly what the options are I felt the excitement of discovery was absent and I was just selecting an option.

Couple of interesting facts I'm unwilling to verify as I freakin' love Hitman and don't want to ruin it:

1) IGN have a video of the pre-credits mission bit which is apparently pretty sweet.
2) If you have (or do) pre-order then you get a free download sniper challenge from the game which is available now.

What? I said it was a couple.

I've got the sniper game and it's alright.

As I've been saying since the first gameplay emerged, they've lost the fucking plot with this. ANOTHER daft third person shooter. This trailer does nothing to suggest that this is a Hitman game and everything to suggest that it's going to be a clusterfuck of stupidity.

Indeed. You can go blazing in and get fuck all points for doing so. I got incredible joy and entertainment by being all stealthy and solving the puzzle, then replaying the mission trying to kill everything that moved. Great fun.

But seriously, it is pre-rendered but the content doesn't really bode well. That's what they're choosing to show off.

Myp - yeah, sort of. But you can only scrape through a level by playing it guns-blazing. The stealthier you are, the higher you score. So far in the footage they've released and now this inexplicably dumb CG thing, there hasn't been a hint of the old stealth that made the game great. It's all been Hitman fighting Gears of War style.

Another great thing about Hitman is the number of ways you can finish a mission. And I don't mean stealthy or guns blazing. There's everything in between. And even various methods of being stealthy. Staging an environmental accident, poisoning, sniping, strangling, stabbing, etc.

I'm seriously worried they've forgotten all of that and gone for an "action stealth" thing. A bit of shadow lurking and a whole load of shooting. Everything they've shown so far indicates this.

It seems you haven't played a Hitman game at all, have you? The trailer is showing a cutscene. Just like the previous games had action packed explosive cutscenes. The past games have been chocked CHOCKED I SAY with slutty wimmins needing killins. The entire nightclub level in Blood Money was about that.

Or if you get stuck being silent but wanted to move on to the next level, you'd just tear the place down and run off.

Plus, wasn't it wholly playable as a FPS as well, or at least from that perspective?

Anyway, I'm not watching that video but I am buying it day one cause I'm a fucking muppet but love the series. I still reckon it'll be aces.

Heaven and Hell. The angels in particular wearing those bits of string. There were a ton more fat old men you had to kill, anyway. Nobody's screaming out about them being victimised.
