In partnership with TfL and London Underground, we’ll be introducing Wi-Fi at 80 stations by the summer, and by the end of 2012, this number will grow to include around 120 tube stations, so travellers can stay in touch in even more places.

All tube passengers will be able to connect to the internet at stations for free when the service launches this July. That means you’ll be able to browse the web and stay up-to-date with news and events listings, review the best spots for lunch and discover great London attractions from your mobile phone, tablet, laptop or other connected devices.

Seems fairly pointless if it's not on the trains.

The fact that there are twenty different wifi providers all that require you to sign up, even the ones that are supposedly free, just renders the whole experience frustrating and shite. If I can't roam seamlessly onto your network, you're no fucking use to me.

You can roam seemlessly onto my network anytime.

Because all your APs have the same SSID and are configured similarly (but on different channels, natch), making them all just different points of access to the same underlying wired network?

Seems fairly pointless if it's not on the trains.

I think that TFL argued the 'not on trains' line by saying that it will prevent people being annoying cocks on Skype, and in any event, the travel time between station A and station B is short enough that you can download a news story at A and read it before you reach B. I think that misses the point somewhat.

The only real benefit I see is that I'll be able to use iMessage, and hence be able to arrange meeting up with all of my friends. Well, the ones that have iMessage, and have it turned on. So, Curiosity then.
