I'd quite like to have a colour laser printer but don't want to buy one where the cartridges are as much to buy as the original machine.

Any suggestions?

To be honest I don't really know how much the toner costs! Sorry for being not much help!

If it's for business use, consider an MFD (Muti Function Device) as the toner comes in bottles instead of cartridges. They are significantly cheaper as there is much less involved in them. We have numerous Ricoh MFDs here and they're very solid and reliable.

Might be overkill for your needs though.

Sorry, Kov but HP printers are getting worse and worse with each generation. The colour laserjets are terrible, expensive, noisy and fragile. They leak toner and jam constantly.

IMHO, obv.

from expwrience,i would avoid hp printers like the plague. the "really good" one my father has stops his computer biiting if plugged in via usb,and continually drops the network, requoring a reboot of both printer and computer.
frankly the software is beyond shit.

I have owned one at home and it was awful. The ones at work are also terrible, jamming up if you try to print off a document of more than 10 pages (and these are the massive multi-function ones).

I would never ever recommend HP printers to anyone. Except Mali.

When we moved most of our building to printing on Xerox copiers, we chucked a lot of printers out.

I got a HP 2600n, a set of tonner costs £150 but prints 3-4000 pages.

I got 2 full sets with the printer so will be able to print for years.

Had to replace the paper tray last year, that cost £40 or so.

Its not the most modern printer in the world, but its networked and does me

A big part of the problem with home HP printers is the ammount of crapware the setup programe installs

These really do slow a PC down, in many cases users don't have the know how to just use the smaller driver file, is other cases with older printers that are supposed to work with Windows 7, you get forced to install the crapware as there is no driver ini file with the sofware (not one that is visable)

My Dad binned his HP for an Epsom because of this.

I've found HP to be fine as long as you don't install the crapware.

Mine seems to go through ink even when it isn't printing anything, every time I want to use it, it has run out.
And... when I do put new cartridges in, and want to print anything more than a few pages long, any page after the first one is all stripy and awful quality. You have to print in "best" quality mode, which uses more ink. Only on multiple page documents though, if i print each page individually they are fine in draft mode. It's as if the printer can't keep up and runs out of puff.

We have a HP ColourLaserJet 5550n here and it gets hammered day in day out.

Only had an engineer out once over 24 months which is ace compared to our last one.

But toners cost a fucking fortune and the quality isn't as good as our old Epson.

So...

:this: We've got networked HP printers at work and there's a number of executables (hbpro.exe, hpboid.exe and another I can't remember right now) somehow involved in printing to them. Multiple instances of these things spring up and hang around guzzling down RAM for absoutely no fucking reason whatsoever and it's all very shoddy stuff. Given that experience with a networked printer at work I shudder to think about the amount of shit they must choose to shovel onto people's home machines.

We have HP printers at work and while they seem to need the fuser unit replaced more often than I'd like, they're fine. I've got one at home too (not a laser one, though) and that's fine. Especially for £25.

Our new hp at work is supposed to do duplex printing. At first, it would simply print one side then stop, waiting for someone to turn the sheaf over and press go. Now it just prints single-sided instead.

Still, at least it hasn't smashed the paper tray lifting mechanism out of itself like the last one did. You had to go I over, reinsert the cog then hold the tray in and up slightly. Stupidly, rather than replace the mechanism - which was held in by two screws so should have been doable - we threw it out and bought a new one.

Dr Kovacs' CEO,

You respond about as fast as one of your printers to a network print request.

I have to say, my C5150 is alright. The ink doesn't seem to dry out as much as it does on the older models; it does expire, and it has that digital chip DRM bullshit, but I've only changed the five cartridges twice in five years so it's not too onerous. It's fairly fast, prints reasonable quality pictures, the Mac drivers don't shit all over your machine, and it works fine plugged into my Airport Extreme's USB port, even for scanning (which I didn't think would work).

We've got a laserjet CM1415. It goes through ink like nobody's business and will arbitrarily fail to work on any given day. Only use it because it supports Postscript and the big Canon one doesn't.
Produces good results though, to be fair to it.
