Yo.

If we needed to display a, um, British Gas logo at a presentation, say, are we legally allowed to just grab one off their website and use it without worrying about copyright and shit?

Love,
Grim...

Define 'need' to use.

I sit in the legal dept, so I will ask them, but the first question they will ask is why you need to use it.

Yeah.

If it's for use in a presentation I'd say it was fine. Unless you're pretending to be British Gas.

Whilst chances are you'd not be 'caught', it depends on what the presentation is, who it is for, the purpose of it all, your prior relationship with the company, etc.

I think.

Or possibly not. All I know for sure is don't use any Olympic logos or Seb Coe will set the fucking SAS on you.

If you're referencing their company then I see no reason to use their logo, just the same as using their name. They might however have some legal crap on how it's used in published material... company image and all that.

We're doing a survey for, um, well actually I don't know who the client is or what specific logos we need, but let's say we're doing a survey for Tesco, and we want people to drag and drop supermarket logos into the order of "best". That's where we'd use other stores logos.

I reckon the worst thing that would happen is that you'd get told to stop it, but it's probably fairly unlikely. It's not like you are misrepresenting them in any way.

You're not using it for self promotion, but as a tool. I doubt it is much different legally to Robert Peston stood in front of their headquarters because for some reason, the news on gas prices is more understandable if he is stood in the rain next to a sign.

I like to think that's because they hate him.
