Anyone know of any good introductions to German history, or books/shows relating to individual aspects of it. I'm particularly after anything that's pre-20th Century (apparently, German history did not begin with You Know Who).

A while back I read Simon Winder's 'Germania' , a whimsical and eclectic travelogue about interesting sites in Germany, and have found myself wanting to know more. Any pointers would be welcome.

Not sure, but maybe history bezzies know of an Internet or software thing whereby one inputs a date or moves a slider and a world map changes to show what boundaries, civilisations, etc existed at which points, with key historical moments, rulers etc available to see.

One may read about the Roman empire but what was going on in the far east and south america at the time? When Ghengis Khan was about his business, who was king of England and so on?

Such a thing would be profoundly helpful, I'm particularly interested in seeing how the world changed as the last thousand or so years of British History unfolded. Seeing the timeline for germany evolve alongside our own would also be helpful and cool, in respect of the OP...

That would pretty cool and very useful. I'm sure it must be out there somewhere.

Yes, I'm being deliberately broad because I want to find somewhere to start - either an overview or some specific period or topic would be of interest. I should read up on Bismark (and, indeed, Garibaldi) some day.

www.euratlas.net has some interesting maps - Europe and the Middle East every 100 years, and so on. It's a long way from your slidey dynamic interactive map though.

All the data is probably on wiki, and someone with MAD SKILLZ could probably do a "mash up" of Google Maps and data scraped from there, with national outlines and notable events and cool stuff like that. IT would be like the replay from the end of a Civilization game, but real.

Do it!

The level of clever graphical manipulation needed for somthing like this is way beyond my ability, although I could make a very tedious "text based" version.

Go earlier. The Thirty Years War is a good place to start, because it's both thoroughly interesting and lays the foundation for the Congress of Vienna and the German Confederation

Fucking hell, bad memories. We were playing articulate once, and MrsA spent a whole minute shouting "He's in Cluedo and he's yellow" at me. it was General Custer. "An island shaped like a sweet" turned out to be Malta.

Not specifically relevant to Germany, but I wish someone would update this 1931 "cartohistory", which charts nation's power and influence over 4,000 years:

That's an awesome chart, but if I were Akbar the Great I'd be a bit cheesed off. Ruler of half of India, and half as important as Norway?

Are you a Visigoth or an Ostrogoth man? I've always been more of a Vandal fan, when it came to post-Roman Germanic tribes.

Fascinating. Nice to see that around 0AD/BC the Iranians were doing much better than almost all animal life put together.

Now they're fighting a losing battle with the Lemurs and Apes though. I'd be to intrigued see the working that lead to the conclusion that the peak time of Bacteria and Fungi was about 1550AD.
