I am excited like a girl about this. There may have been squeeing.

It had better be fucking good.

Here, have some trailers that you will have already seen:

I will definitely be paying a grotesque amount of money to watch this at the cinema.

I remember being super excited when Tony Stark was in the end of The Incredible Hulk, at the thought of an Avengers movie.

I'm sure he's done a great job really.

Yep, I'm totally on board for this and might even go to the cinema for it (something I haven't done for years). Marvel recently published a series of short comics called "Fury's Big Week" which actually tied all the recent films together in a single narrative as a setup for the upcoming film and, shockingly, it was relatively well done and coherent. Hopefully that sort of usually shitty tie-in being done well is a good omen for the quality of the film itself.

It's definitely an opening weekend film for me. I've stopped watching trailers and reading anything about it for fear of being spoiled.

Shame it's not being shown at the iMax because after seeing the surprisingly entertaining Thor this weekend I was totally up for a Nerd-O-Day-Out.

I can't wait for this. I'm well fucking excited! I've watched no trailers or anything, except the post-trailer bit at the end of Capt. (during which, I may or may not have shed a tear or two).

One thing I've never gotten about The Avengers: What use is Captain America?

You've got Hulk, Iron Man and Thor. Two practically unstoppable brawlers, and one unstoppable flying brick who's also a one man artillery piece and a brilliant engineer to boot. Oh and Bruce Banner is one of the top scientists in the Marvel Universe.

Cap is someone who's pretty strong, compared to a normal human, and has a nifty shield. If I was Nick Fury, I'd sack him and get Deadpool or Squirrel Girl or someone.

Aye. Although he is much stronger and more resilient than your baseline human, he's sold more as being a brilliant leader and strategist who comes with the bonus of being pretty good at kicking baddies in the face. A lot of his interactions with other characters involve him inspiring them to be their best and he's good at rehabilitating previously bad characters (most recently the Red Hulk and Ant-Man for example).

The Hulk is normally green, but was apparently grey for a while in a story line that sounds really fucking stupid even by comic standards. The Red Hulk is a completely separate character that was relatively recently created. And then of course there's She-Hulk and Red She-Hulk plus Skaar and Hiro-Kala (the sons of the green Hulk).

The Red Hulk sounds terrible but the current work that's being done with the character is actually pretty good; as with anything it's all about the execution and a good writer can make even the shittest sounding premise into something interesting.

In the comics the green Hulk hasn't really been (entirely!) about mindless smashing for years either and for as long as I can remember he's had most of Banner's intelligence intact even when hulked out so he's no longer the monosyllabic cretin people tend to think of. Although that is still the case in the movie version obviously.

He doesn't. At least, not in the cartoon which is on Disney XD.

In the comics he's not been in the Avengers for years, largely I think because, as you imply, they're supposed to be a professional team and he was just a huge fucking liability for so long. Even now that he's intelligent he's too pissed off at them all to work with them. To be fair they have done shit like lure him into a ship and then fire him off into deep space over the years so fair play to him. How they work him into the film version of the team will be interesting to see.

Just got back from seeing this! Squeeeeeeeee, that film makes me happy.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The Hulk is just pure Awesome, i didn't realise awesome was a colour and it is green. In Grand central with Thor and then with Loki at the top of Stark Tower "Puny God".

Joss Whedon has done a great job with this.

I put this in the Movie thread, but it seems better placed in here :D

So.. The Avengers then...

First 15 minutes or so is pretty good, then it bogs down for the rest of the first third. Slow, unfocused and a bit messy, just seems thrown together with no real pacing or direction. Also, the main actual plot is hokum bullshit as expected.
Then the rest of the film starts... The last 2/3rds are incredible. Writing is excellent, the dialogue isn't just excellent for a superhero film, or just excellent for an action film, it is excellent full stop. Very witty, fast and honest. Laugh out loud funny in a fair number of places.
Action wise each scene is basically the coolest scene in the film, every single action set piece could have easily been put in a trailer, the action itself is completely un-formulaic and unpredictable, and also strangely believable. The non-super superheros of the team never feel out of place.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The end fight scene between Hulk and Loki is utterly brilliant

All in all, easily the best of the recent set of superhero films. I'd need to watch it again to see how it stands up to a second viewing, but a solid 9.5/10 from me after the first time round.

We're off to see it tonight so I'll post some thoughts whenever I get a chance after that.

On a related note, when I went to book it there were two showings at the same time: one apparently in 'digital' and the other using 'd-box' whatever the hell that is. I found the D-BOX website but it's not really very illuminating, anyone know what exactly this is all about (aside from doubling the ticket price of course).

Motion controlled seats, apparently.

According to my Twitter, occasional Beexer Mentski saw this in The Screening Rooms. I was immediately jealous that that isn't within a reasonable drive from my house.

I have seen this.

First act is merely very good. Second and third acts are perfection. Best comic movie of all time, I think (need a rewatch to confirm).

Fave bits:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Loki/Hulk (duh).
Hulk randomly smashing Thor sideways out of the frame (duh again, this had the audience at my screening rolling in the aisles).
Thor/Hulk fight' particularly Hulk getting smacked in the face with Mjolnir.
"Target acquired... Firing at target... Target angry TARGET ANGRY1"
"Hulk... SMASH!"
Cap America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow remaining completely relevant and interesting during the final showdown through deft writing, even as the higher powered characters were flying all over the place.
The Avengers-logo "A" being the only bit left on Stark tower.
The entire mid-film set piece being far better written and more exciting than most film's finales.
The finale being even bigger.

Can't believe Whedon restrained himself to just one character death!

Was it me or did the aliens (which I think are the Marvel Ultimate version of the Skrull) look a lot like the Locust from Gears of War, especially the big flying things?

Two ace casting notes for IMdb:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The Hulk is voiced by none other than Lou Ferringo! And the leader of the aliens, who talks to Thanos in the mid-credits sting, is Alexis "Wesley Wyndham-Price" Denisof!

My wife’s one and only fault is that she generaly hates films and TV like this.

There are a few exceptions, the Walking Dead is (bizarrely) her favourite TV show and she will watch Supernatural.

So I won’t get to see this until it’s on DVD, as I'm not off to the cinima on my own.

Oddly enough she has made a new friend who loves all things sci-fi, she watched this last night and said it was brilliant

I don’t like superhero films. They’re predictably formulaic, and watching the same story but with a different protagonist every time gets me fed up pretty quickly.

I really enjoyed this. I thought putting so many of them together in one film would just be a nerd’s wank-fest, but every character was relevant, and the story did well showing how utterly useless each character is alone, yet how obscenely chaotic they are if they try to work together. This is definitely a superhero film done right, finally.

A question for the comic book nerds

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The Hulk transforming at will in the final fight scene and saying his secret was that he was "always angry" Wouldn't that mean he had to be the Hulk all the time then? How does that work? Is that the same as the comics these days?

The Hulk transforming at will in the final fight scene and saying his secret was that he was "always angry" Wouldn't that mean he had to be the Hulk all the time then? How does that work? Is that the same as the comics these days?

I thought that was a bit of a hole personally because it implies Banner has complete to-the-second control of the transformation which flies in the face of the earlier scene on the helicarrier when he was fighting not to hulk out. Certainly it doesn't tie into anything in the comics and I suspect both that transformation and the line that went with it were just put in because they looked/sounded cool. Unless I'm missing some wider significance there anyone?

As for the comics, in recent years there hasn't been as much animosity between Banner and the Hulk because the Hulk is no longer a monosyllabic idiot so he doesn't rampage around fucking Banner's life up for him as soon as his back is turned. There's more of a co-operation between the two, with them transforming as required to take advantage of each characters strengths (The Hulk's literal strength and Banner's genius level intellect) in order to achieve their shared goals. Actually, right at the very moment in the comics the two have been separated completely by Dr Doom at the Hulk's behest and Banner's been driven pretty much insane by it all in a really poor story by the otherwise excellent Jason Aaron; but I don't expect that to last much longer and they'll be back to sharing a body pretty soon no doubt.

No matter how in control Banner looks, the Hulk is always barely contained. One tiny slip or one intentional nudge and out he comes.

I think you guys are over thinking it!
