I could be mistaken, of course. However, I'm not sure that's what Trooper was referring to there, Mimi... :D :hat:

Fnarr etc.

All the tobacco legislation in my lifetime (I smoke) has felt like passive aggressive bullying. Now I'm mature enough to appreciate health warnings I am a serial quitting failure but I have to admit I'd not try very hard to find more if it was banned, which is precisely what they should do.

If you want to stop me smoking, stop me, don't nudge me about like a slightly irritating cousin at the dinner table.

Yeah, agree with all of that.

Even I baulk at the idea of legalising H - filthy drug. Pure or not, it's still *incredibly* addictive. In my past life, spent with a bunch of pretty hardcore tokers, I've seen people smoke weed every day, do Billy every other, snort Coke, routinely do E - all to more or less no avail. But a few "graduated" to H and without one single exception, all were fucked up big style within a year, despite being previously relatively OK with habitual, routine use of all these other spectrum of drugs.

Also, I know many total coke-heads now, but every single one of them holds down a high powered job and is able to function pretty well by all accounts; far, far better than even a heavy drinker, let alone H user. It really is in its own category as far as I am concerned; not only incredibly addictive but also rendering users totally incapable of doing pretty much anything.

Heroin is a filthy drug by virtue of its being cut with other things (samples I have sent for analysis have come in at one or two percent actual smack) and the means of cleanly injecting it being so hard to obtain even for those who want to, not to mention the paucity of clear and correct guidance for IV users. Moving from smoking (and street brown should never be injected, but it is all the poor can get) to injecting is a fairly rare thing and tends to be for one of two reasons... People either get coerced into pinning up by some wanker because they are vulnerable, or due to some trauma of the mind in earlier life they become addicted due to the effect it has, namely it is like an off switch for painful memories. A very, very large number of IV addicts indeed are self medicating to numb the memories of sexual abuse.

As such, smack IV addiction will perpetuate while it is an option for under supported abuse victims and the like, and while recovery options are underfunded. I am quite convinced, based upon years of helping people off the drug, that while methadone is used as the main 'cure' nothing will change. Meth is basically the same thing but worse, but it is legal on script, and cheaper than the alternatives which, as opiate receptor blockers, simply kill the brains ability to get high. They aren't cheap though. In any case, I am convinced it is harder to come off nicotine, if a less acute detox curve. I wish I was still in contact with my clinical psychologist ex, whose papers on the matter concurred with my assertion.

I'd decriminalise, because legalisation isn't the only option. The fact is middle England won't vote for a decriminaliser, look at the Brown government (ha!) treatment of professor David Nutt...

Yeah, agree with all of that.

Would you stop? If "the man" said "no more cigarettes", but they were as easy to get hold of as weed is now, would you stop?

Yeah, I reckon. Mainly because I'm not one for sitting inside and smoking. I smoke when I'm out and about. If that's out, I'm not going to hide in my shed and have a sneaky puff or something like that. I'd be far too lazy to find a dealer too.

To briefly return to my earlier musing - £7.65 for a prescription yestterday. Blimey.

It's almost enough to make me consider moving back to Wales.

Prohibition doesn't work, and if they raise the price of fags high enough, it becomes a de facto prohibition, at which point the criminal fraternity will take over and meet the demand. (Certainly my dad was telling me last year that most of the smokers he knows now buy their fags out of the back of someone's car boot.)

My company head office is in Belgium so people are always travelling back and forth. 200 fags cost around half what they do in the UK so every time I go I bring back 600 fags and sometimes rolling tobacco for people.

On drugs even if we were to legalise them there would still be the black market, which would be even be cheaper or provide a private service. People would be worried about what the government would do with the data on what people where buying.

For those that have never tried drugs, but quite like 200g bars of chocolate or coffee.

Imagine they were made illegal.

Yeah you could do without them, but your life would the poorer. Maybe you'd know someone who knew someone who could sell you a bar of chocolate or could aquire a jar of in-date coffee.

You think that will never happen. I'm not so sure, both of the above have addicitve properties.

So when the drug, cigarette (oh and alcohol - dont forget minimum pricing is coming in shortly) wars are won, dont be too surprised if there is a tax on coffee or chocolate.

I actually do know what I'm talking about but I dont think I'll bother to try and explain a drug high any more than I would try to explain what having sex is like to a 40 year old virgin. You have to try it to know about it. People dont pay those sums because its shit put it that way. :)

I don't think anyone suggested that drugs weren't fun. Totally not the issue here.
