Right, I have been asked, I think asked is the right word. To organise MrsKovs 40th Birthday party.

So far I have a venue, a local village hall, which has a bar. And fits up to 200 folks.. Her birthday is in July.

Now I have to plan and theme it...

Any suggestions, any great parties you have been too or hosted.

Help!

Hawaiian holiday theme with fancy-dress, and give everyone a lea (flower necklace, cheap from party shops) as they come in.
Stick a paddling pool in the middle, get some blow-up parrots and trees and shit - laughing.

This certainly works better for a 40th, than say, an 80th.

Mrs Z's 30th party was brilliant. That had an 80's fancy dress theme so wasn't that restrictive.

It sounds like fancy dress is the way to go but I would have a theme that doesn't restrict people.

Some people don't like dressing up (Can't see why though)

Fancy dress party all the way mate - Tarts 'n Vicars always good for a laugh! :D

Get one of those 'display in a box' fireworks as well - you know it makes sense.

Fancy dress parties are awesome, if you can be sure that enough people will make the effort. This is coming from a man who once attended a party as the Easter Bunny to find he was one of two adults in fancy dress, and everyone else was in civvies.

A Hawaiian party is July has the advantage of having you turn up in fancy dress even if you're only wearing shorts and a t-shirt :)

At new year, 60% of the people came dressed as "Quidditch" for our "Sports that should be in the Olympics but aren't" theme. I awarded them all second place, then refused to give them a prize as second place is the first loser and such things deserve no reward. MrsA and I came third, as "One man and his dog" and our other friends won for "Gladiators with the pugel sticks", replete with fake tans and stuffed lycra.

I once judged the fancy dress at a Hallowe'en party I was DJing at. I couldn't decide between a guy dressed as Yoda and a guy dressed as Austin Powers, so I made them do a dance off and got the rest of the audience to cheer for their favourite.

Within thirty seconds they were having a full-on fight :S
Swear to God, I saw Yoda smacking Austin Powers with a light sabre.

Best one I saw was a man dressed as a paedo. He had a long mac on, with a puppy under one arm, a bag of sweets in each pocket and a bag with rope and duct tape. The added benefit was, that when we got into town, he just took off the coat and put it in the cloakroom while the rest of us looked like idiots.

Movie themed parties are good, then for people who don't really want to play, they can go dressed in regular clothes and say they're from 'any film'. As long as they've thought about it, even if it's just as excuse not to dress up. Lots of potential for reusing old costumes you never thoughts you'd get to wear again, too.

... Class! :DD

Last one we had here, my younger son-in-law came as Papa Lazarou - face paint the lot. I was in church about a month later for wedding bands to be read out etc. The collection plate was doing the rounds and, sitting at the end of one of the pews as I was, the church usher was standing right next to me waiting to take the salver once I'd put in. We'd been running late and I just grabbed any old jacket on the way out the door.... the one he'd borrowed/used for the purpose, as it turned out ... so, as I absent mindedly opened it for my wallet, there were rows upon rows of clothes pegs covering the entire lining of the jacket (some of which clattered onto the floor).

The look on that poor woman's face was priceless; I think she thought I had a couple of them on my nipples or something. Mind you, how do you begin to explain that one...? I just said nowt. And left very quickly afterward.

I once went to an "animal" themed party in jeans and a t-shirt with a blow-up doll tied to my back. Excellently, the joke was played out as soon as I got out of the taxi, as a load of people were standing there.

"What the fuck are you meant to be?"
"I'm a snail."
"What's that on your back?"
"That's Michelle."

Same goes for fancy dress at work. At halloween, a lot of the folk on the ground floor here dressed up and I made the effort up here. I didn't get changed till I got here as my costume was a little cumbersome. Unfortunately, no-one else on the entire floor bothered, so I was sat here dressed as the Grim Reaper all day, feeling like an idiot.

Still, I won 1st prize and got booze, so it wasn't all bad. :)

I went to a Halloween party as Leatherface once complete with real chainsaw.

It didn't have any teeth but it still revved up and sounded ace. I ran down the street chasing a load of people with it towards the end of the night.

You can have a fancy dress party based on a letter or colour.

Years ago I shared a house with some girls and they chose the letter N, one guy came witha birds nest on his head.

I also went to to a purple one as well. I prefered this one as a purple tie did the trick.

Not everyone likes dressing up!

Am off to a 30th Birthday party in a few weeks with the Fancy Dress theme being the letter C. Mrs SG is going as a Cat-burglar so i am going as a cop/constable. Worryingly the lass whos Birthday it is grandmother has decided she is going as a Callgirl and the cousin is going as a Cock in a Condom.... Could be a fun night :DD

Had a chat with her close friends, and we are going for Black and Silver (seen some funky decorations) and telling folk to dress smart..

Now DJ, catering, etc to sort.

I went to an 80s themed party last year as Columbo (yep, he was there in the 80s), complete with floppy wig, mac, cigar, and notebook. It was all pretty fucking awesome.

I'm supposed to be going to a nautically-themed party next month and while I'd like to go as Guybrush Threepwood I don't think enough people would get it.

When I used to throw elaborate Halloween parties, there was a strict "no fancy dress, no getting in" rule to circumvent this.

Only took about 10 bloody hours to make, along with my ghostly mates.

Yep, 5 ghosts. I still have the bastard thing taking up half a cupboard.

Someone bought me a Pacman mug (with a typical mid-game screenshot) about a month after the party which, weirdly, had five ghosts printed on it. Coincidence? Yes.
