I really, really like the way that I can 'snap' open windows to the side of the screen in win 7 and compare things side by side.

Is there a tool that I can install on my work Mac which will replicate this function? I'm having to compare multiple windows often at work, and even on a reasonably big screen it's starting to annoy me that I have to keep shuffling things around. Getting a second monitor is not an option.

Cheers

(Mac OSX 10.6.8 ).

If you stare at it enough, it'll "just work" and then cure cancer.

Try turning on App Expose in the System Preferences. I think in older versions of OS X it did this with F8, on my Macbook it was turned off but the default gesture was swipe down with three fingers.

EDIT: Without a touchpad it's Ctrl-down arrow. It's in the Mission Control prefs for the keyboard version.

Cheers Meaty, I use expose - well I think it is expose - I press F3 as it's got a little icon on the keyboard and all the open windows whizz down to a small size. It's great for switching between windows and I use it a lot as I have often got a lot open at once.

However, I'm after a bit more than just quick switching. What I'm after is a way to see things nice and big, side by side but without having to manually resize and move them around myself each time i open a new file or switch programs. I'm having to copy a lot of things between different spreadsheet files.

I appreciate that this may not be possible, but it's aways worth asking.

Aha! Turns out it was actually really, really easy... a cinch, even.

Well, you solved your problem, but App Expose makes all the windows of just the currently open application whizz down to a small size so you can see them all at once... not everything else too.

That's not really solving the same problem that Cinch does, which is for maximising two windows (of the same or different applications) to half the screen each, e.g. to cross-correlate data or copy/paste things back and forth. It's a feature I use pretty often on Win7.

No, but it sort of did what he was after without needing to install anything else.

You can't drag and drop contents, or cut and paste data when in expose mode though.

Well, I did install cinch, and it is super nifty (so much so that I'll probably pay for it, even though the demo is unlimited and the nagging is really, really unobtrusive).

I was just about to pay for cinch, but didn't want to do it through their website as it's easier to use the app store (which I hadn't actually tried on a 'big' computer before).... and then I saw a cheaper app but with better features (snap to either left/right, or even top/bottom halves as well as quarter sized windows in each corner).

It's called Window Magnet, and I really really like it. I paid for it, around 2 or 3 dollars.

I don't know, but I will have a look on the app store description. There's no way I can try it with two, but I wonder if there might be some form of conflict there.

One of the MAS screenshots shows it working with dual screens. Dunno about these duel screens though. Ask Zorro.

"External display support - Manage your bigger workspace at the speed of light, even on external display"

Also, I paid 99c for it, so that's actually really good value to me. I get a lot of use out of it, so it's a longer lasting benefit to me than a bag of sweeties.
