There's no denying the XBLA survival-horror Amy was slammed by critics and gamers alike when it released a few months ago. Of the 35 Metacritic reviews, 33 gave it a negative review and the other two were mixed. The game is stricken with a 25 overall on the site.

However, the developers never quit on the game and those that stuck with the title and provided feedback are set to reap the benefits. After many back and forth discussions, Vectorcell has released a patch that addresses many of gamers' primary complaints with the game. Here's the whole list, straight from the studio:

- The last checkpoint you reach is now saved (instead of going back to the beginning of the chapter)
- the syringes remain in the inventory after a checkpoint is reached
- Amy's Powers remain available after a checkpoint is reached
- the Combat camera has been removed
- most sequences can now be skipped
- the ingame brightness has been improved.
According to the tests we carried, Chapter Five is now much easier with these changes.

I definitely think it's commendable. More scary is the power the gaming press actually has when it really lays into something. It has obviously sent a message to the developers. It's a shame they're so craven when it comes to criticising most things, though. Battlefield 3 could've done with the developers listening to some hard criticism, for example.

Commendable behaviour, but I doubt many of sites, if any, will revise their scores based on the patch, so the damage has probably already been done.

Although not in my case - I'd never heard of the game till this thread.

This should have been stuff picked up in playtesting, however. While I agree it's good that they fixed it, it shouldn't have come out broken.

Also, anyone that reads a print review and then plays the game will think the review is innacurate, which is side-effect of this kind of thing.

I suppose it's good that they stuck with it but if they'd have released it with all those things already fixed, like what they should have done, then it might have got average scores and nobody would be commending them for anything.

edit: what Grim... said really.

Yeah, that's how I see it, I think. They've basically righted their own wrongs, so I guess they've ended up right in Averageville.

I very nearly bought Amy as soon as I finished the demo... so went and peeked at reviews and saw the hate. I could probably live with most of it... except not being able to save except at the end of each chapter! Now that's fixed I might well get it after all.

Battlefield 3 had appalling pre-release coverage. In spite of a worrying lack of info from DICE and almost complete focus on the singleplayer, the gaming press were fighting over who would get to suck its dick next. Only when the game came out did the complete bollocks that was the singleplayer become truly apparent, as well as the nightmare of Battlelog for PC owners especially.

I gather that they are planning a PC version, so if they have actually made the game lots better, they should get some good press when that comes around.

Interesting thoughts on TA:

Quote:
It's really not that bad a game.

AMY does have a very small appeal field but hey, the game's creators were willing to completely change their game to make it more appealing to you. You know who isn't going to do that? (It's Bioware) Which is really unjustifiably sad when you think about it: the small, struggling game devs are doing as much as they can to change/fix (but they are changing) their game for you, that's been bashed by almost everyone while the super-mega game devs that single-handedly divided their fanbase and series with less than a second thought don't care what you think (because "artistic integrity") and will still be rolling in fans and money with years to come.

What justice?

Quote:
Sure they've patched it now when they're probably desperate due to poor sales, but when the game first came out they were flat out insulting any reviewer that gave their game a bad review. They were utterly unaccepting of criticism and only seem to be responding now because their wallets are hurting.
