Werl, the premise makes me want to fling money directly into his pudgy eyes RIGHT NOW GODAMMIT.

Quote:
"I want the space game that's more like Firefly," Notch told PCGamer. "I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here."

He's also been tweeting about a programmable computer onboard your ship, too. I'm frothing at the spluff. Sod Braben if he's not going to do Elite 4, quite honestly.

Just being able to run around the inside of your ship as it hurtles along makes me want it too.

Unlike EvE, where after a year you're still trapped in your studio apartment in the space station.

Have you seen Faster Than Light? It's a top-down affair of moving your crew around the ship to operate or repair stuff while rogue like battles with enemy ships take place outside.

Isn't he always banging on about making something or other, people get excited, then he never mentions it again and goes back to developing "Scrolls", which still isn't finished.

Now that looks good. Saw a video of it a while back.

He's not developing Scrolls. They're publishing it.

The thought of being damaged and having to run down to engineering to put out a fire, or make your way to the escape pods... it's one of those childhood 'man I wish a game let me do this' things. Imagine going out the airlock to repair damage!

I'd buy that, certainly. I'd even play something like that in multiplayer - someone's flying, another manning a gun turret, while someone puts a fire out.. that sort of thing.

Guess it'd be like an updated Buck Rogers for the Mega Drive.

Well, they are, but Notch isn't doing any of the coding or development in any way.

So what is he doing? Other than teasing people on Twitter about games he's not developing and games he's not actually going to fund, natch.

He handed Minecraft over to Jeb, had a long holiday, developed some 48-hour game things, played with a few ideas, then this week decided to forge ahead with this Elite inspired thing. That's what we're talking about.

I'm imagining building your ship like in Minecraft now. In a drydock.

Likewise, imagining moving through it in a similarly fluid way.

Heck, Frontier: L33t 2 and Minecraft's graphics would more or less complement each other. The long transitions through the stations would be amusing too.

Just think! Building space stations like Minecraft!

Think that's 'mazing? Imagine this: you could fly between people's Minecraft servers... which means you would build a starport to accommodate visitors. They could admire your shit before flying off again.

Yes. Elite again. Woo. I really dislike Elite's interface. I much preferred Frontier's, which I've also played to death.

Trying to remember if you could walk around your ship in Noctis. It's been a long time since I played it and the ship was probably pretty basic anyway.

Unfortunately it won't run on a 64-bit OS and I can't be arsed to create a boot disk at this time of night.

Never really got on with the original Elite, but literally played Frontier to death. Pioneer sadly is still in alpha, but what I played ages ago I thought pretty fun, when it wasn't crashing.

Each ship has a generator capable of producing a fixed wattage, and everything you connect to it drains wattage. A cloaking field, for example, might require almost all the power from the generator, forcing you to turn off all computers and dim all lights in order to successfully cloak.

The computer in the game is a fully functioning emulated 16 bit CPU that can be used to control your entire ship, or just to play games on while waiting for a large mining operation to finish.

In a parallel universe where the space race never ended, space travel was gaining popularity amongst corporations and rich individuals.

In 1988, a brand new deep sleep cell was released, compatible with all popular 16 bit computers. Unfortunately, it used big endian, whereas the DCPU-16 specifications called for little endian. This led to a severe bug in the included drivers, causing a requested sleep of 0x0000 0000 0000 0001 years to last for 0x0001 0000 0000 0000 years.
