Here, once a month, the databases need about 5 hours to roll over. Which is funny, as lots of people want stuff by the end of the day, and I can't use them. In the meantime, I'll be in my rack.

Using Foursquare and facebook data, an app tells you where girls were. Until it was pulled. Clever wording, I know.

I just do not get Foursquare at all. I mean I don't understand what its purpose is or what people use it for?

Often on Twitter I see 'I am at the co-op', 'I am at ____ hospital', 'I am at the Post Office'. I guess I'm not quite sure why you'd want to tell people the details of everywhere you go (stalker's delight) or why your normal friends would care? It seems to be quite popular among American people.

I *think* it's a very useful way to get user data about people's habits, so they can then receive targetted adcvertising (via things like group on) that they might or might not take up as it is relevant to their interests or habits. Also, health firms could use this is someone goes into a tobacconists too often.

Ok, I can see how businesses etc might welcome it, then, but still can't see why individuals use the service and choose to volunteer all if that information about themselves to the world

I use it mostly because I have an app called Memento that compiles everything I put on Foursquare (plus Twitter, Facebook, my blog, Instagram, etc etc) into one place. It's nice to look back on -- a diary that writes itself.

The other major reason is, when travelling, to find cool stuff other people have left tips about. I've discovered restaurants to visit that way, and out-of-the-way plug sockets in airports for laptop recharging on long layovers, for example. This stuff appears when you check in to a place.

I don't send my Foursquare data to Twitter or Facebook, though. I have no idea why people do that.

Oooh, that does sound quite interesting, as long as I can keep it private to me and other people can't see if I check in to places.

Yes, you can use it as a completely private service with some twiddling in settings.

It's worth pointing out that practically everything creepy about this Girls Around You app came from Facebook, not Foursquare.

@ kalmar You can see on the engines that it's going to be aqua and yellow tho. They might pull it off if it's has a greek/roman vibe but I don't hold out much hope of that.

that's because they are using a colour that they have named 'dove gold'.

It's a bit like this colour I have invented. 'Dove purple'. It's almost the same as dove gold, but purpler.
